Just in time for church
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Two Republican campaign pieces scorched the mailboxes this weekend, both as personal as you can get. You can tell things are serious when direct mail includes the name of the candidate sending it — but only in the fine print.
On Friday, it was a Karen Handel piece on Bill Stephens, her rival in the GOP race for secretary of state.
“He fails the character test,” was the headline. It included info about fines levied against Stephens by the State Ethics Commission, and some info about defaulted loans.
But the flyer also took Stephens to task for his sponsorship of the infamous S.B. 5 in 2005, which critics damned as a measure to loose the dogs of eminent domain. Stephens is the second Republican candidate to be bitten by that legislation. Remember that Ralph Reed took a chunk out of Casey Cagle for it a week or so ago on TV.
The second mail piece is return fire from Cagle. This is bottom-line stuff, aimed at core evangelical Republican voters. It’s Abramoff-based. “Ralph Reed sold out Christians for millions from casinos,” is the headline. On the back: “Oppose hypocrisy. Vote no to Ralph Reed for lieutenant governor.”
You don’t get more brutal than that.

I thought Handel’s piece was well done, factual and to the point.

I about croked when I saw Cagle’s new mailer. It is so dark, so pointed, and so undeniable that it must be causing severe heartburn in the Reed camp. Which made me think: What will Reed throw back at Cagle in these final days of Georgia’s most heated campaign?
Claiming that Cagle voted this way or that on obscure issues won’t do it. No, it will have to be devastating. Anybody care to opine what it will look like? Post now so we can see who really is on the inside of the Reed Machine.

Christians, like many people, often fall for a cult of personality. They ignore the facts and vote their feelings. Yet their feelings are based on perceptions, images, not facts. Ralph Reed has built and used a cult of personality to make millions of dollars getting Christians to support non-Christian issues like Indian casinos, Enron, open borders, Free trade with China, etz. Just as baseball fans asked Shoeless Joe Jackson, Christians are asking, “Say it is not so.” Yet, the evidence is clear Ralph Reed used the faith his friends and supporters put in him to make money in ways they never would have supported. Ralph say it is not so.

Can someone retire William Bill Edwards. He is the biggest political joke in the world. Bill has a reputation of being vindictive and only concerned about developers and his friends that write checks. South Fulton wake up and get this common hood rat out of the commisioners chair !!!!!!

I received both pieces and I was turned off by both. Is this what political discourse has become in 2006? I for one will not support either Handel or Cagle.
Cagle, in particular, should be sounded rejected for propogating the lies of the liberal media concerning Reed. I though Reed did an excellent job during the debate. The liberal media wants to talk about a Washington guy who gave some business to Reed’s company rather than talk about the issues that Georgian’s care about. Who cares about indian casinos. Reed worked to keep gambling from growing and that’s all that matters. He has been charged with nothing wrong. Get over it and get to the issues.
Instead Cagle looked silly, almost like a child at times as he tried to find ways to bring it up again and again. That kind of politics of personal distruction should be rejected by all voters.
And who is that woman who made the racial remark about Indians and their beads and such? If she were a Republican she would have lost her job for such a biggoted remark.
In any event, I will vote for Reed and Stephens. Don’t bother sending your attack mail pieces to me.

Reed never bilked anyone. Reed was in private business when he made hism fortune. Cagle was supposedly serving the taxpayers when he made his fortune. Cagle want form renting tuxedos to bank president in 4 years and increased his fortune by 900% during that time. And Cagle would have us belive he did not use his office for personal gain. Yea, right!
The Senate Report state the Indian Tribes were happy with Reed’s work. Check out page 31. The Alabama Christian is happy with his work. So tell me, Cagle , who did Reed bilk?

GRG, What’s interesting is that I recieved two mail pieces from Handel. A long one - 8 pages I think, that was very well done and laid out her plan. I also recieved the negative one about Stephens. Given Stephens attacks on Handel for the last year, I think Handel had no choice but to lay out the truth about Stephens.

I think Handel’s entitled to dig at Bill a bit. Stephens has been telling anyone who will listen that she’s a lesbian for the past year, among other vicious lies, and he’s just getting what was coming to him.
Besides, I think people need to be reminded that Stephens was once a serious Democrat, serious enough to raise money for Bill Clinton (the Handel attack piece has a photo of Bill and Bill).
People need to be reminded that Stephens received the largest ethics fine in state history - $14,000.
People need to be reminded that he defaults on loans to the tune of $97,000. If one of us normal citizens did that, we’d be out on the streets or in jail. Yet Bill somehow skates by…
People also need to be reminded that while he calls himself the pro-family candidate, he’s the one who cheated on his first wife with a co-worker (a co-worker AT THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE, NO LESS, WHICH IS WHY HE HAD TO LEAVE HIS JOB AS ZELL MILLER’S PRESS SECRETARY).
People need to be reminded that while Karen was out working for Dan Qualye trying to get George Bush ‘41 re-elected, Stephens was out helping Bill Clinton push 8 years of socialism on this country.
Seems to me the choice is clear…

CobbGOPer - You forgot to mention that he was a protege of James Carville
Bill Shipp May, 21, 2000
”Though he now labels himself a conservative Republican, Stephens considers himself a protégé of noted Democratic political strategist James Carville and Gov. Zell Miller. Stephens was communications director of Miller’s 1990 campaign for governor. Carville managed the campaign”
