McCain report on Abramoff comes down Thursday

The Arizona Republic reports this morning that the “long-awaited” final report of the U.S. Senate investigation into Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff will be issued Thursday.

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee, chaired by John McCain (R-Ariz.), began its research Abramoff’s dealings with casino-owning Indian tribes nearly two years ago.

The newspaper said the report isn’t likely to point any fingers at members of Congress. “Still, the timing of the report’s release is not the greatest for McCain’s fellow Republicans, who would prefer that potential voters not be reminded of Abramoff with the fall elections just around the corner,” the newspaper said.

The report could be even more critical to July 18 vote faced by Ralph Reed, now a GOP candidate for lieutenant governor in Georgia. He’s figured prominently in documents made public in four separate hearings dating back to 2004.

Isn’t it odd that a member of the Keating 5, only republican in the group, would be leading the investigation into Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Since the left loves a good dirty investigation and keeps reminding us of the sins of our fathers, I doubt this will be a earth shaking as the left wants.

Regardless of legal issues, Reed is a joke of a businessman. I think he’s an idiot if he handles as much money in business transactions but has no clue where the money came from or where it was going. He’d make a good middle man in the money laundering business. Brings a new meaning for turn the other cheek…

Joe,

Typical leftist talking points reader, the Clinton investigation stemed from the President lying to a Federal Judge, and yes, he was convicted of a high crime or misdemeanor. Purjury does file that catagory.

Wake up and use real topics and not something recycled from the Daily Show or SNL. Both excellent lefties real news programs.

I just love to hear the right-wing try to justify all of the Bush/Abramoff/Reed shenanigans or try to downplay them. They drank too much of the cool aid and do not seem to realize the robotic type response to these issues they give. Anyway, when the heat gets too, too hot, let’s bring out Clinton. That is too rich!!!!!!!!

Robert,

Are you reading the posts? The Republican poster did not bring up the Clinton investigation. This country will be much better off when people realize that both parties have their fair share of crooks. Neither has a monopoly! Wake up!

Abramoff, Reed, DeLay - an orthodox Jewish conman, a bible-thumpin’ born agin conman, and a Texas bugman born agin conman.

An unholy trinity if there ever was one. Organized religion corrupts, and conservative organized religion corrupts absolutely.

God hates these folks.

Tony, Clinton was impeached and prohibited from practicing law for so many years.

Reed did nothing wrong.

Look forward to the report. Maybe that will shut up Cagle supporters constant harping that Reed will be charged with a crime.

Van, you are exactly right. Ole John “Keating Five” McCain in charge of a corruption investigation. We American people, both conservatives & liberals, have got to be the dumbest damn people in the world. Instead of throwing these bums out of office, we argue who’s the best!!! THEY”RE ALL BUMS!!! When you have people like John McCain who was up-to-his a$$ in the Keating Five Savings & Loan scandal now overseeing a corruption investigation, you gotta know “you’re going to get to the truth”. And if you believe that the Clintons have some land left over at Whitewater…

I was at a meeting tonight of the Cherokee GOP promoting my GOP candidate for governor, Ray McBerry www.GeorgiaFirst.org Reed was there and Chip Rogers spoke for Cagle. Reed is very slick but has a lot of good ideas. My theory is vote out the incumbants every time. After one or two times they will start listening to us instead of special interests. This state has gotten worse in many regards since the GOP took over. Very disappointing.

Ralph is an unabashed liar. He talks of putting government on a diet then lays out an agenda that drools in debt.

Pray tell who is going to pay for his spending projects, Debbie or the Tooth Fairy?

By Debbie

Michele, I think it is very wrong of the Georgia GOP not staying out of the GOP Primary and will not even provide a link or info about other candidates. The county parties are bound by rules that state they have to remain neutral in Primaries. The State Party is not bound by those rules.

I support Perdue and Price, but think the Georgia GOP should help all that pay their qualifying fee.

There will be a rule change introduced at the Georgia GOP Convention next year. Stay involved and help pass that rule change.

Bubba, get a grip on reality. Cagle lied about the Taylor contribution then back tracked on it. There was an article in the AJC about that where he admitted it was not true about the threats. Cagle lied on his financial disclosure form. Cagle lied about why he helped killed Tort Reform in 2004.

Ralph wants to downsize government. Isn’t that a GOP Principle? Reed is going back to the Reagan Principles of less government is best government. Some elected GOP officials have strayed from those principles and it is about time we got back to those core principles.

Instead of a Reagan Revolution, we now have a Reed Revolution.

Debbie, get a grip, your drool for Ralph is quite evident, but consider the facts.

Ralph talks about establishing “boot camps” (perhaps he needs one) for problem children; promises vouchers for parents to send kids where they want; new roads, no problem (I imagine he figures the red Georgia clay is hard enough to drive on).

Then in his last press release he thrashes the Department of Revenue as just a bunch bureaucrats. Hello moron, but thats the department to loser would rely on to collect it’s taxes.

Ralph has no way of implementing his soundbyte platform, absolutely none. He, and his lap dogs, simply know how to pimp out suckers to do his bidding.

Empty promises, empty rhetoric = Ralph Reed

You redneck fools will have sex with anything - living or dead, animal, vegetable or mineral.

Tony ,

Whats the matter, didn’t the democrat talking points say anything about this, it was in all the newspapers, including the AJC.

Clinton was convicted of lying to a Federal Judge during the Paula Jones sexual harassment civil trial. The Judge levied a fine of $90,000, and suspended his law license for a period of years. In connection to having his license to practice law, he lost his ability to plead cases before the Supreme Court.

Yes, he was convicted.

@ Debbie,

Perhaps your anomosity towards gay people is an outgrowth of your childhood experience. Sure, you saw your dear dad having sex with men, boys, dogs, etc. - but it was not because he was gay - after all, your mother tricked him into sex - but it was because he was southron. He didn’t leave the family because he was gay, he left because that’s what southron rednecks do.

Or maybe because your boyfriends and husbands have left you. It’s not because they are gay, but because you are an angry, stupid, ugly, fat foul-mouthed woman. It must really be horrible to be you with all your justifiable self-loathing, but if you are the problem, you are the solution. Let’s face it - if gay marraige is outlawed, you’ll still be an angry hatefilled ugly lonely woman.

So - go take a look in the mirror - take a shower today - you really need it. Brush your tooth.

A new start.

Most of you folks must not be from the Georgia. I have never seen a more uncivil group of people. Where are you manners?

Democrat or Republican, you folks are all people. Perhaps if you all showed a little more respect for each other then we would live in a better world.

Guess what, just because you believe something different than another person it does not make you right or better than anyone else.

If Hon. appears in front of your name then save your juding for court room, otherwise leave the judging of your fellow man to a higher power. If you are going to post on these blogs, show a little respect for you fellow man. Saying mean things towards other folks on this or any other blog is down right cowardly. You think you can do it because you are sitting safely at home or work and do not have the face the person.

Shame on all of you. If this is the way your mothers and fathers raise you, then shame on them. I pray this is not how you all are raising your children! Otherwise we are in big trouble in this world. START SHOWING SOME RESPECT FOR YOU FELLOW MAN!

Abramoff and Safavian….criminals. Reed has ties to criminals and pretends he has no knowledge of anything his friends did. Either he’s a liar or so stupid he has no knowledge of anything going on around him. Either way he’s bad for GA and good for DC. He’d be better off running against Chambliss in two years. Who wants either a bad liar or a pathetic businessman who can’t even follow the money trail? Who wants a man who gets duped left and right as Lt. Governor? Or is it a man who lies about his corrupt dealings as his friends get caught and he runs free trying to be moral?

I had a very good friend in my youth that lived in my neighborhood, we went to the same church, sang in the chior together, our parents were good friends too, he even went on family vacations with us.

In our senior year in high school, I found out that he had become a cocain addict and was robbibg houses to support his habit. I later found out that I had ridden around in his car when the trunk was full of stolen goods. Was I guilty of anything because of his bad decisions? No! Abramoff was not always a crook. He was a good guy who had a record of doing good things. You don’t spend your time looking for your friends to go bad, and you really regret that you didn’t pick up on it sooner when something like that happens, but it doesn’t make you a criminal or a bad person.

Cagle Profited From Public Service, Contributed to Democrats, Admits He Violated State Ethics Laws

On the campaign trail, Cagle claims a “fairly high standard” for himself. But his actions reveal a different standard of “everybody does it.”

Cagle Claims Moral High Ground. Cagle says he sets a “fairly high standard” for himself. (Atlanta Journal Constitution, November 20, 2005) He told voters, “I believe that we have a moral obligation to lead by example.” (Christian Coalition of Georgia, Lt. Governor Forum, January 21, 2006)

But Cagle Voted 33 times on Bills Benefiting Banks, Including His Own. Cagle was appointed to the Senate Banking Committee the same month he opened a bank. He had no previous experience in banking or financial services; his prior employment was ownership of a tuxedo rental store. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution, June 18, 2006) Between 1999 and 2006, Cagle sponsored or cosponsored five bills and voted 33 times on legislation that significantly affected banking while serving as chairman of the Southern Heritage Bank or a director of the bank holding company that acquired it, GB&T Bancshares. (Senate Vote 27, SB 19, 2-2-99; S.V. 227, SB 230, 3-9-99; S.V. 475, 3-24-99; S.V. 264, SR 241, 3-15-99; S.V. 269, HB 297, 3-15-99; S.V. 918, HB 1231, 3-13-00 ; S.V. 717, HB 272, 2-23-00; S.V. 1048, HB 656, 3-16-00; S.V. 922, HB 1364, 3-13-00; S.V.1069, HB 1257, 3-20-00; S.V. 177, SB 70, 3-6-01; S.V. 178, 3-6-01; S.V. 211, SB 25, 3-7-01; S.V. 365, HB 191, 3-19-01; S.V. 555, SB 353, 2-6-02; S.V. 1111, 4-12-02; S.V. 20, SB 53, 2-12-03; S.V. 130, 3-6-03; S.V. 233, SB 157, 4-7-03; S.V. 853, 3-4-04; S.V. 80, SB 78, 3-3-03; S.V. 414, HB 506, 4-17-03; S.V. 568, HB 385, 4-25-03; S.V. 662, SB 405, 2-2-04; S.V. 1028, HB 1258, 3-24-04; S.V. 1027, 3-24-04; S.V. 59, SB 82, 2-14-05; S.V. 95, SB 100, 2-22-05; S.V. 287, 3-17-05; S.V. 207, SB 127, 3-11-05; S.V. 504, 3-31-05; S.V. 436, HB 59, 3-29-05; S.V. 437, 3-29-05) )

Cagle: Everybody Does It. Cagle’s bank holdings increased 900% while he sat on the Banking Committee and voted on regulations that significantly affected his bank business. When asked about this conflict of interest, Cagle “essentially uses the ‘everybody-does-it’ defense.” (“Cagle: Everybody Does It,” Savannah Morning News, June 11, 2006)

Cagle Contributed $1,000 to Liberal Democrat Mark Taylor, Then Admitted He Lied About It. Shortly after Democrat Lt. Governor Mark Taylor appointed him to the Senate Banking Committee, Cagle contributed $1,000 to Taylor, who used the funds to elect Democrats to the state Senate and defeat Republicans. (Cagle Campaign Contribution Report, December 31, 1999) Cagle claimed he contributed because Taylor threatened him. (Cagle Campaign Email, April 25, 2006) Cagle now admits the story was false. “I don’t ever remember Mark quote-unquote threatening me.” (“Cagle Retreats from Alleging Threat by Lieutenant Governor,” Atlanta Journal-Constitution, June 10, 2006)

Cagle Violated State Ethics Laws. Legislators are prohibited by state law from soliciting funds while the General Assembly is in session. When Cagle claimed he raised $100,000 in a single day from lobbyists and other interests once the legislative session concluded, his campaign admitted counting funds it had not received—-a clear violation of state ethics law. (Larry Peterson, “How Cagle Shook the Political Money Trees,” Savannah Morning News, April 27, 2006).

With a record like this, no wonder Casey Cagle has been running a negative campaign of personal attacks against Ralph Reed for 15 months. The Cagle record is personally profiting from public service, contributing to liberal Democrats, and violating state ethics laws. Georgia Republicans deserve better.

Debbie,

You have THE worst logic of anyone I know. It reminds me of a first grader arguing their point.

How would that be a defeat for a campaign that had nothing to do with Ralph’s actions? You could say the same thing for Clinton. Millions of dollars and years of investigations and he was never convicted or removed from office. Ralphie can do shady things and still not commit crimes. It doesn’t take breaking a law for him to be a liar. Neither does it to prove he’s a hypocrite. If both of those were law, Ralph would be in jail for life.
