Edwards: Still hope for Dems in the South

But he's not sure that everyone in Washington thinks the same way

Former vice presidential candidate John Edwards spoke at a $1,000-a-plate Democratic fund-raiser in downtown Atlanta on Friday.

The fact that extra tables had to be brought out was much remarked upon. Organizers said $100,000 was raised, which will be split between state House and Senate campaign efforts.

Edwards gave the Readers Digest version of a speech on poverty that he’d just delivered in Athens a few hours before. Americans need to reach out to the “37 million people who wake up in poverty every day.”

He also demanded that the nation “end a national embarrassment” and raise the minimum wage.

Afterwards, reporters quizzed him about the immigration fight in Washington.

Edwards said he liked the McCain-Kennedy approach — tougher border security “that that needs to be combined with a policy that favors hard work, respects hard work, so those that those who have been living here and working hard can get on a path to citizenship.”

Asked about ’08, the former U.S. senator from North Carolina said: “I’m considering, but I have not made a decision.”

He remains one of those who thinks the national Democratic party can’t walk away from the South. “It’s critical for my party to compete in Georgia and North Carolina,” he said.

Then he was asked whether that thinking has yet penetrated the Beltway. “That’s a good question,” Edwards said. “I think Governor [Howard] Dean believes it. But it’s sometimes hard to get people in Washington to understand what’s happening in the real world.”

I hope all will support John Edwards…The more you learn about him, the more you’ll learn what I’ve known since I first ‘discovered’ him in January 2004…John Edwards is MAGIC! And he’s especially what we need to dig our country out of this disaster that the Bushboy has created. If only the election were tomorrow…SIGH.

John Edwards is a fraud. He made his millions scamming juries into giving multi-million dollar judgments against doctors delivering babies born with birth defects, pretending to “channel” the feelings of the dead babies to “give the parents” money.

He’s the worst of the worst, the main reason we desperately need tort reform in this country.

My thoughts exactly, John…if fact Ive ranted that same thing since he was running for Pres. As a Tarheel, I am hugely upset that UNC created a job for this maggot who has fleeced MILLIONS of dollars from the backs of hardworking people who’s healthcare costs have skyrocketed because of the likes of John Edterds…senator GONE, we called him in NC…he is completely sickening the way he exploits the poor…I never hear about his personal donations to the poor, however….

To call John Edwards a fraud begs the question: Who was defrauded? The Juries? The Judges? The Doctors? The injured plaintiffs? The INSURANCE COMPANIES??? Your Moral High Horse?

To say he is a fraud and then say the system must be reformed sounds like sour grapes aimed at someone who is very good at performing his part of an adversarial system that is a core element of our democracy.

To say that lawsuits have caused skyrocketing health care costs shows an ignorance that extends beyond poor math skills to willful ignorance.

Obviously, both John and Hunter have not read Senator Edward’s book, “Four Trials,” about his 20 years as a trial lawyer. His practice of law stands in stark contrast to the stereotypical ambulance chasers. Give yourself an evening to read his four cases, and you will undoubtably find renewed hope for the profession of law and deep respect for Senator Edwards. As a native Georgian, who has lived the last 20 of my 50 years in North Carolina, John Edwards deserves the examination of those who know of the legacy of Jim Hunt, Terry Sanford, and Bill Friday in North Carolina or William Hartsfield, Carl Sanders, and Sam Nunn in Georgia.

To say John Edwards is a fraud is to completely MISrepresent the man. What an offensive thing to say, really.

Check your facts, get off the talking points by opening your mind to the big picture, and you’ll soon see what so many others have already seen: John Edwards is EXACTLY what America needs and we would be so, so fortunate to have him as our president.

Um, Clint…I DO know the legacy of Jim Hunt, former Governor of NC, et al…They are at the very crux of all the ongoing CORRUPTION wielded upon the citizens of NC as I write this…democrakkks have ruined our once great state, and we are about to rid ourselves of the most corrupt man in NC, House Speaker Jim Black!!!

John Edterds is absolutly sickening the way he exploits the poor AND the middle class. He, and his loiwyer ilk, are the biggest reasons for outta control healthcare in America, and they look to rake it all in again if they can force socialized medicine. When he starts working to get GOVERNMENT OUT of healthcare then Ill change my opinion of the ‘breck girl’…
