Hockey’s not for the faint of heart

Since my Gators had a bye week in football, I decided to spend the weekend with my next love - hockey.

There are two very distinct qualities of hockey that you don’t really see in any other sport: 1) It is fast paced, never stops and is certainly not for the faint of heart. 2) It has a very honest, extremely loyal, genuine and, yes, somewhat aggressive personality that carries over to its players and fans. My kinda people.

Hockey is one of a kind. Once you have experienced it you are instantly infected, and its becoming an epidemic in Gwinnett as more and more of our youth are choosing to play hockey.

I had a great conversation with Lee and Jeanna Herren, who’s son Matthew prefers to play hockey over football and baseball and plays on two hockey teams (high school and a house league), agreed with me that their son will probably be a better person because he plays hockey.

Steven Ruffolo, coach of the Peachtree Ridge Lions, tells me that the 10 yr old youth hockey league has grown from 8 teams to 24 teams, 500 players and 100 coaches, including an all girls team, split between 3 divisions.

Steven explained that no player is turned away who is interested in playing in the high school league even if a high school doesn’t have a team. Such was the case of Margina’s son who attends classes at Loganville High School.. yet plays hockey for the Grayson Rams.

Collegiate hockey has even made its way to Gwinnett as the University of Florida Gators tread deep into the heart of enemy territory to face the (and I promised to be nice) Georgia Bulldogs this past Friday nite at the IceForum in Duluth.

GATORS 5 Jawjuh 3

Mike Stapleton, of the Georgia Student Hockey League, informed me that the Duluth IceForum will play host to the GeorgiaTech Holiday Tournament featuring GeorgiaTech, Georgia, Middle Tennessee State and University of South Florida on Friday November 21 through Sunday November 23.. Proceeds to go Children’s Healthcare.

My weekend full of hockey ended with a great seat at our very own Gwinnett Gladiators opening night Saturday. If this team looks as good the rest of the season as they did Saturday nite… the Gwinnett Arena may have to make room for yet another banner.

Mississippi Sea Wolves 2 GWINNETT GLADIATORS 6

My perfect record remains intact. I have never been in attendance for either a Gator or Gladiator game and they have lost.

Maybe I need to pay my Bolts a visit. (sigh)

Everyone should go to a hockey game - it’s the best sport out there. Continuous action and very physical. Unfortunately, it doesn’t translate the best to television - nor is it something anyone can just get up and do.

With HDTV, the sport will grow a little but is still a “must see” in person.

Been to many games. I had season tickets to the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim. Not just for hockey, but for every even there and Ducks hockey was a bi-product of that. I have to say it is better in person than on TV, but I still wasn’t impressed. As far as I’m concerned, we should just give the NHL to Canada and be done with it.

SSPrite: I will second that… its something you have to experience in person because its just not the same on TV.

Why is it always the fattest, most out of shape dorks that are the biggest sports fans?

Hockey is nothing but soccer on ice. Rumor has it the French invented it so the wives had something to do while their husbands cooked dinner.

Boooring.

Why does the biggest moron here feel the need to post on blogs just to offer that his opinion is that it is “boooring”? What a waste of flesh.

Stan,

I realize that Woody is the only AJC blogger that writes at your second grade reading level, but who the hell cares what sport Woody likes.

Maybe someday Woody can write about your favorite sport of cruising the local QT stations for young Latino boys.

Are we really informed about anything going on in Norcross by reading this blog?

Surely, given the rampant local illegal/gang problems in Gwinnett he could find something better to write about.

How about an update from the Quality of Life Unit of the GPD?

This is just drivel. And, of course, Stan loves it.

LT once again breaks out with the homophobic butt slams…I think we all understand what that say about him.

It should be noted that I also enjoy Badie’s blog and Wooten’s blog. I guess that means they both write and the second grade level. Though I must admit I don’t care at all for Bookman’s idiotic misdirection, he must write at the fourth grade level.

The AJC, in their infinite wisdom has choosen to allow Woodie to blog here. If you don’t care for what he say then simply go away and read the headier blogs at M4Matl.com

Stan,

I didn’t say anything homophobic or anything about butt slamming. You certainly seem to have a good grasp on the verbiage.

Maybe that you read it that way says alot about your proclivities.

Make sure you clean out that History file on your computer. You wouldn’t want Mommy to see where her little Stanley has been surfing.

Oh yeah. Hockey still sucks.

Oh yeah. Stan still sucks too. Literally, not figuratively.

I guess a boy with an 8th grade education has to earn pocket money somehow.

People who claim to hate hockey are the ones too ignorant to understand the game, and how it is played.

Hockey is the last sport where white guys still have a chance.

And they never play rap music at the games.

And hockey fans actually drink good beer rather than the druel southerners usually drink.

And you never have to hear anybody yell “Go Dawgs” at a Thrasher game.

All reasons why hockey is the best sport going.

In the words of Don Rickles: LT, you’re a hockey puck.
