Tattoo this!

Throughout history tattoos have been the ultimate expression of personal spirituality and individuality.

And, if done correctly, one of the most beautiful forms of art there is.

I have a slight obsession for tattoos and they’re I am very passionate about. It goes back to my elementary school years as I admired my best friend’s dad whose arms were covered with ink. Ever since then, much to my mother’s horror, I have wanted tattoos. I got my first at age 25, and I don’t plan on stopping with just one.

Of course, there are those, including Daddy Boortz, that have a negative outlook on tattoos. Granted, as with most things in life, there are a few rotten apples that ruin it for everyone. Many associate tattoos solely with prisoners, gangs, prostitutes and, well, trash.

The fact is that many extremely reputable people, including corporate executives, lawyers, salesmen, firemen, policemen and members of the military have tattoos.

Unfortuantely, regret is also a big part of getting a tattoo as well.

Last week, AJC writer Phil Kloer wrote about people who may or may not regret getting tattoos. For all those that answered “yes” could have easily avoided buyers remorse if they had just followed a few simple rules…

And you know how I love to share my rules.

Woody’s Rules for Tattoos

Don’t ask the artist if it is going to hurt. Nothing annoys tattoo artists more.

Truth is, depending upon your tolerance for pain, its really not that bad. This coming from someone who isn’t a very big fan for needles in the first place.

No names!

Nothing in tattooing has a higher probability ratio for a regret than does getting someone’s name tattooed on you. No boyfriends, girlfriends, husband, or wife’s name. Not even “Mom” or “Dad”. However, I “may” be breaking this rule someday. Not sure yet.

Be original and be absolute!

Make sure it’s a design you are absolutely sure about and don’t something that everyone else has. A perfect example would be the ever popular Celtic arm bands, or the “stock designs” for example. Tattoos are all about deep personal and spiritual expression and should be original and timeless.

Find a good artist!

The thing to remember here is, you get what you pay for. Take it from me that finding the right artist (the first go around) makes all the difference. Ask friends and acquaintances for references. Check out the artist’s portfolio to see if their quality and style fit you. More importantly make sure safety is their highest priority.

How do you feel about tattoos? What other advice or rules would you give to someone looking to get a tattoo?

I have tattoos and don’t regret any of them. I knew going in that they would be a permanent addition. I think tattoos that say peoples names, or even MOM are lame. Be original.

I have a few tats. I love them. I have a few more planned. I never planned on getting a name tattooed to me, but that was before I had kids. I have all 3 of my daughters’ names on my left shoulder. It maybe boring or lame to some, but it is my way of keeping them close to my heart. My parents have both passed away and my next two will be something that reminds me of them.

I like my girlfriend’s pretty tattoo on her back, but then I see these guys at a restaurant wearing hip-hop clothes, ball caps and arms covered in all sorts of random black tatoos that didn’t even look very cool. Im sorry, but if you are a white guy and wear your pants lower than your buttocks, your ballcap to the side and have tats all over your arms to look tough and gangster when you’re just a little white guy…you’re a dumbass. Sorry, my two cents.

Hell no, I would never have a tramp stamp or a ho mark tattoo—that’s for sluts only… Nice baiting though, gandolf the old pathetic no weiner man.

Tatoos are very useful, it makes it very easy for me to identify a scumbag.

I have enough permanent marks in the form of scars that I don’t need any tattos. And each of those has a much more interesting story.

Disfigurement is not an expression of individuality.

How did you get those scars then LT, you’re certainly wacked enough to enjoy disfiguring yourself?

Don’t tell us those scars are from gettin down with the gangs and runnin dem off your turf.

Scars could indicate a person that gets beat up a lot, that I could believe LT or the person is sicky, something else I could believe and finally a very uncoordinated nerd, yup, that works too.

Tattoo’s can be cool, but I never felt a need for them. I do have laugh lines from reading so many of LT’s rants.

Another pointless column that has nothing to do with the Gwinnett County and issues facing it. Although most of the other columns on here are the same way. Why is this in the Gwinnett section? I hope the AJC isn’t wasting their money by actually paying Woodie and Rick Badie for these writings.

Actually Brucie,

The scars are from fights and surgeries.

Being the candyass that you are, you probably don’t know that even the winner of a street fight gets scars.

Now everyone here knows that you have significant scarring on you knees from your “duties” at the video booths of Inserection.

A tattoo is now, always has been and forever shall be a mark of lower-class breeding. No one who was properly reared in a God-fearing Christian home with decent parents could ever conceive of marking their body in such a way. The Good Lord gave us these beautiful bodies to go forth and do his work, and to mark it with perversion is purely evil. It is an unfortunate sign of the times; liberalism runs rampant. Homosexuals are some of the worst abusers of their bodies in the form of tattoos (not to mention the other sinful abuses in which they partake). If we could eliminate the evil homosexual agenda from our society and free America from the clutches of liberalism and the disgusting democratic ideology that sin should be tolerated, then I would promise that we would see no need for tattoo parlors. Once the homosexuals and homosexual-supporting liberal DEMONcrats were gone, the tattoo artists would be gone and anyone partaking in their services would be gone. Tattoos are evil, disgusting and a vile perversion of your body.

Woody, I have about half my body covered in tattoos at this point in my life. I began when I was a teen, when it was still considered a mark of an immoral, degraded misfit who must be a thief, a liar, or a drug dealer (or drug DOer). Now that tattoos are “hip,” it seems so funny that so many “normal” people are walking around with body art, but if you look closely at what many have tattooed, it alludes to one of the points you make above—it’s called Flash—people go into a shop, pick something off the wall, and get it tattooed then and there. I find it ironic they spend more time shopping for a car than something they’re having etched on their skin. Tattoos began as a tribal ritual to identify someone with a tribe or clan and also served to indicate their status in that society. Then it evolved to what you earlier noted, a symbol of inner spirituality. I thought long and hard, sometimes years, about what I was going to get engraved on my body. Each has a very distinct flavor and meaning for some phase of my life. I guess that is to say, I agree wholeheartedly with all the points you make: Don’t go get a tattoo because you think it’s cool for 5 minute or hip or because you want to fit in or because you want to impress someone. Tattoos are for YOU.

There is a steadfast rule from within the tattoo community regarding the tattooing of names: Blood (parents, siblings, spawn, etc.) is fine, Love (those you bed down with) is a curse. I’ve personally seen the latter manifest many times over. Tattoo a lover and watch the love die. Yes, Woody, as with most things, you truly get what you pay for. NEVER choose from things on the wall and ALWAYS trust the vision of the artist. It is their art until it is on YOUR body.

Tattoos were once considered to be a form of art, and often used to identify those of importance in certain societies. Obesity, in earlier times, was a sign that a person was wealthly.

Times have changed …tatoos are a mark of lower class trash. Being overweight is now a sign of poverty.

I find it amusing that many times people assume someone with tattoos is low class. These people are probably racists too who think that all Asians are bad drivers, all African-Americans are drink malt liquor and all Jewish people are cheap. Just as you cannot generalize about a race of people, you cannot generalize people who choose to get tattoos. Woody is right - people who get flash tattoos or don’t think long and hard about them before having them done are definitely stupid and give the rest of us a bad name. However, there are those of us who only have tatoos that mean something to us. I have seventeen tattoos and don’t plan on stopping anytime soon - and they are all meaningful and symbolize something from my life.

And, I can answer why this is in the Gwinnett section! It is because we have one of the finest tattoo artists in the country right here in Norcross! His name is Tom DePriest and he is at Sacred Heart 3 on Indian Trail Rd. He is an incredible artist.

So to any of you people out there who think I am a bad, vile person because I have body art - screw you and the high horse you rode in on!

After reading all these comments, I may just want to get a few tat’s. I’m older than most who comment here it seems and have alway donated me bod. Just as I think it be cool to have all my major organs i.d.’ed with a cut here line!!!

There is nothing wrong with tats, it’s the person, not the tat that should make an impression, those who don’t get it are the same people that asks what church you attend.

I never met a person with a tat that wouldn’t help you out when in need, tell me, how many times can you say that about the perfect, tie-wearing WASP next door?

Tattoos are a sinful expression of headonistic lifestyles. Homosexuals are a large purveyor of tattoed flesh. As are drug users and general socially undesirables. I can not imagine any dignified Christian person having a tattoo. It is just vile and disgusting and all of you are no better than the homosexuals who prey on our children. Disgusting!

Lady Alexis - and I use the word “lady” loosely - WHAT STONE are you under. I am a christian - and dignified as you put it. I”m not a drug user or socially undesirable - far from it.

You just further helped the theory of people just like you being the hypocrites that are just overwhelmingly STUPID and close-minded.

As I stated before - you don’t like mine - don’t look. I would hate for your “perfect” god loving eyes to fall out …..

By jenn

Alexis….the only person that judges is GOD himself. Get off your high horse.

Don’t judge, lest you be judged. If you have so much faith, then respect your neighbor, whatever thier choices and let GOD lead him or her where they are to be. I don’t think GOD appreciates you being condescending. Plus, MANY people get RELIGIOUS markings, dealing with pain in his name or to celebrate his mark upon thier lives.
