Move over Rachael: Norcross on $40 a day

If you are hungry and looking for restaurant to grab some grub, Norcross, incorporated or otherwise, is in no short supply.

It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. Norcross was once the getaway resort town for Atlanta socialites.

Times may have changed some since, but Norcross has something for everyone from the very low end to the fairly high end and just about any kind of cuisine you can think of.

I have yet to sample all Norcross has to offer and I thought it would be fun to take a culinary tour of Norcross befitting one of Rachael Ray’s signature shows “$40 a day.” But I have a few more rules:

  • I have never eaten at the restaurant before.

  • One restaurant must be new to the area.

  • One meal must be eaten on the east side of I-85, another between I-85 and Downtown Norcross, and one in Downtown Norcross.

Let’s see how well I faired eating out on $40 a day in Norcross!

Breakfast - “Old Timers Breakfast” and coffee.
Cracker Barrel 6175 McDonough Drive Norcross, Ga. - $10.03

Yes, I already broke a rule, but I have never been to the Norcross location, so it qualified. It appears that Cracker Barrel hasn’t really changed much in 20 years with the “General Store” and the very country cottage style décor that sets the tone for their food.

Lunch - baby back ribs, caesar salad and the ABSOLUTE BEST mashed potatoes that have ever crossed my lips. And, of course, iced tea. Norcross Station Café 40 South Peachtree Street Norcross, GA - $23.13

I had heard so much about Norcross Station and I was pleasantly surprised because I was expecting a diner/sandwich shop kind of atmosphere. The décor inside really mirrors the charm of both the surrounding downtown area and the railroad history of the building with a great menu selection.

Dinner - cheeseburger with tomato and jalapeno (fresh..not pickled) with a Diet Coke.

Five Guys Burgers 5860 Jimmy Carter Blvd., Norcross, GA - $7.09

I had $6.84 left in my budget by the time dinner rolled around, which was fine because I was far from hungry thanks to breakfast and lunch. Five Guys has a typical burger joint diner atmosphere which is getting rave reviews by the experts.. and my friends!

Total for the day: $40.25. I busted it (and probably my diet) by 25 cents. I doubt Rachael Ray is gonna jump out of the shadows to beat me with her rolling pin.

Where would you have eaten for $40 a day in Norcross following the same rules?

At some point in the day, lunch or dinner, I would have gone to Paizano’s in Norcross: just down the street from the Station cafe.
There is a reason that an Italian friend of mine who owns two restaurants in Atlanta makes a monthly trip to Paizano’s for pizza. Of course, your choices were far from bad, too.

Jake: As far as downtown Norcross is concerned… Paisano’s is on my To Do list… along with Dominicks and Iron Horse Tavern.

Lupitas on Beaver Ruin is good. The food is great, the staff is friendly and the owner is almost always there to greet you. We go there every week—not saying what day though. Iron Horse tavern is over rated, their beer is good though.

I agree with Katie, Lupita’s on Beaver Ruin has great Mexican food and a friendly atmosphere. We’ve been going there for years and it’s always good.

We also love Paisano’s for their pizza and Eggplant Parmesan, but Dominicks is just about the best italian food I’ve ever eaten. It’s a little more expensive, but worth every penny.

Another good place to eat Chinese is Golden Buddha on Beaver Ruin Road. If you like your Chinese food with a little kick, they’ll spice it up for you. Again, good food, friendly staff, good service and great atmosphere.

Oh forgot. Their Tacos de Carne Sada are very authentic. They make their own corn tortilla’s, get them with corn, not flour—you’ll definately go back for seconds.

Yummy!!!

How many calories did $40 buy? I few weeks of that stuff and your blood will be sludge.

PoliticalMan: I refused to weigh myself before/after…and I certainly wouldnt wanna know what my blood sugar was… but to be honest… it was alot of food.. but not tooooo far off my diet (ok well the breakfast was a bit.. but I made up for it at dinner).

I could do $40 for a week and not even be limited to Norcross…and stay in an acceptable range for caloric intake, sugar, fat…etc.. of the average person.

Breakfast: Banana or Lean Breakfast Pocket Lunch: Healthy Choice frozen brick dinner Dinner: Wendy’s, Taco Bell, McDonalds, Zaxby’s, Chik-fil-a

Wow Woody, really packing it away.

Are you and Rick Badie having a race to a BMI of 40?

I think you should try Tierre y Mar in Lilburn. Ignore the 13 health rating.

Oh yeah. Do you think you could blog about the homicide rate for Gwinnett this year? I think we are up to 5 or 6.

There are so many different cuisines in Norcross, too, that it’d be a shame not to try some out. Mi Pilon on Buford just east of downtown Norcross has pretty good Dominican fare with a lunch special plate daily. There are supposed to be some good Indian places in Global Mall (?) on JCB next to Pappadeaux, but I haven’t made it there yet. Can’t argue too much with the ones you did go to, though. I’d love to find a really great breakfast place to go to.

I can never get pass Dominicks, ah, just like New York.

March 26, 2008 8:40 AM | Link to this

Hi Bruce,

Well i can think of 1 more that LT5000 likes to rant about…but to each his own. LT5000 is alright…

Remember Bruce…you promised. I didn’t even get into Badie’s blog about patriotism…I didn’t want to dirty it up or have my name show up on it at all and disgrace the subject. I do have an opinion and stuff to say, but sometimes things are best left unsaid. Especially if you type it out on a blog…you can’t really unsay it.

Haha…when I said that, I could hear the voice of Paulie (the bird) from the movie “Paulie”.

By LT5000

March 26, 2008 8:42 AM | Link to this

When Brucie isn’t bashing America, he can be found cruising Jimmy Carter for his daily intake of Mexican “chorizo”.

I guess you people don’t expect much from you bloggers.

Like I said, much more pressing issues in Gwinnett, especially Norcross, than where Woody stuffs his face and Rick Badie’s continual error filled articles.

So Woody is prepared to spend $1200 on just take out in Norcross?

LT5000

By Cindy

March 26, 2008 9:44 AM | Link to this

LT5000, I never said I don’t expect much.

It is however their blogs and their choice of what to sound off about. As it is also our choice whether or not to comment.

I figure they has this under control long before I showed up, and in my absence, they probably could still manage.

What a boring world it would be if all we ever got from these guys/ladies and were able to discuss was politics or bad news items. As with other things in life…I like to mix it up sometimes. I for one would not check up on what ya’ll say if all I ever saw was negativity.

Remember, Garbage In = Garbage Out. You have to feed your mind with good stuff too.

And poor Woody was dragged over the coals lately too…he probably was looking for a more-neutral subject for this week.

By Katie

March 26, 2008 9:54 AM | Link to this

Since when do blogs have to be about negative things or ‘pressing’ issues? Can there not be a variety? We can’t always be focusing on the negatives, if you do that you are one depressing person and not someone I want to talk to or be around. Later…

LT5000—-

Perhaps you should apply for a job at AJC and write about pertinent issues in GC? I’m not being sarcastic. Sometimes, you just have to do it yourself. It’s obvious that you care about your community. Give the local journalists something to contemplate.

Blog responses will be the immediate and best indicator of what is pertinent among residents. However, identifying the problems is not enough. That would be way too depressing.

By Cindy

March 26, 2008 10:47 AM | Link to this

I think that’s a mighty fine idea as well.

By LT5000

March 26, 2008 10:48 AM | Link to this

Basically Badie and Woody are trying to hold onto their jobs.

They will never write anything that has a modicum of substance to it.

The readers should demand more. Who cares where Woody is stuffing his face? Does that tell me anything about Norcross? No, it tells me Woody needs to haul his fat butt to the gym.

Badie and Woody’s blogs are supposed to be about the community, not what they deem pertinent.

Gwinnett and Norcross have a lot of pressing issues and nobody writing about them.

And yes, I am talking about Illegals, Code violations, the CID and a skyrocketing crime rate.

LT5000

By Cindy

March 26, 2008 11:09 AM | Link to this

I thought blog writing was volunteer stuff…applied for and chosen, but not a job.

LT5000, you do have stuff to say…why don’t you see about getting a blog here, for real? I think reader is on to something here. I remember seeing a while back where they were looking for more Gwinnett County bloggers.

By Cindy

March 26, 2008 11:11 AM | Link to this

Forgot to include this:

if you do get a blog of your own, it needs to come with a disclaimer, “not for the faint of heart…if you can’t stand the heat, stay out of this kitchen.” or something to that effect.

By reader

March 26, 2008 11:23 AM | Link to this

LT5000—-

So far, you have two supporters of your potential blog…and I don’t even reside in GC! However, most communities experience the same frustrating issues. Go for it. The worse thing that could happen is that they turn you down.

By Katie

March 26, 2008 11:26 AM | Link to this

LT, how is eating at local restaurants not a community issue? Can we not blog about our experiences at local food/watering holes? It may make the community stronger if we are more willing to try out places our ‘neighbors’ recommend. People might spend more time at local places rather than going to Buckhead or other areas. Who knows, you or I may run into Woody at one of these restaurants. I’m just saying that community issues are more than just politics, they can be anything other as well.

By Bruce Wilcox

March 26, 2008 11:49 AM | Link to this

I forgot a great newer Polish Resturant that I forgotten the name of, it’s on the corner of Peachtree Industrial and Medlock Bridge, I still think it’s Norcross.

The place is nice, good wine menu and those who never tried polish food before are in for a real treat.

Cindy I live by the old rule, “Bash onto others, as they have Bashed unto you”. As far as the discussion on patriotism, I was basically debating one person, certainly not LT, I just cannot lower myself to LT’s level anymore.

Woody,

You barely write about politics. And you never write about immigration and crime.

If you have attended the CID meetings, you would know that these are the issues that are the greatest concerns to the community.

By the way, they finally did clean up the graffitti at Pirkle and Singleton.

Give it a break LT, if you had your way all three blogs would be what you like to whine about the most. Believe it or not there are other people that rather discuss other things, things happening outside, in the real world.

LT, I hate to say it man, but if you’re that afraid in your own neighborhood that you wet your pants going to the mailbox, it is time to move.

I wouldn’t say that to many people, but in your case, well, in all honesty, all you are is a whiner. More than a few have suggested ways to handle the problem, one get off your butt and paint over it, others told you who to contact, yet you rather whine.

LT, you have lost any credibility you may have had.

Bruce, We went to Dominick’s last night. The food is good but the atmosphere was, let’s just say, ‘my poop doesn’t stink’. We’ve been there many times, and it’s full of people who think they are much more important than they really are. It kind of ruins the experience for us. Whether they are locals—I didnt’ see any neighbors in there, or people driving from other places, people don’t have to act so snobbish. They do have good food though, have to give them that.
