Where are the elected officials?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
There I was doing a little research, trying to put together a blog about a petition going around to end the ban of Sunday alcohol sales, when 1:30 rolled around and I started getting ready to head off to the Gwinnett Village Community Alliance Kick Off Party at Lucky Shoals Park.
The two-hour event started at 2 p.m. and at about 2:30 p.m. The presentation of speakers started and I was already irritated. Not that it really takes much for that to occur these days.
So what could have possibly happened to get Woody’s blood boiling before anything even started? It wasn’t what happened - but what didn’t happen - again.
First, a little political geography concerning The Village. Some of the political leadership that (should have) any direct involvement or interest in the success of The Village include: Congressman Hank Johnson (D), State Senator Curt Thompson (D), State Representative Hugh Floyd, State Representative Pedro (Pete) Marin, Gwinnett County Commissioner Bert Nasuti (District 2), Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson and Gwinnett County School Board Member Louise Radloff (District V).
Some pretty influential people right? Probably could do (and yes, some probably have done) a lot to improving things around here.
Well by my count, only two of those people showed up to show any support for the community: Pete Marin (who has been at every Village event that I have been to) and Louise Radloff.
No Hank (He doesn’t seem to have much time for Gwinnett these days.).
No Bert (he was probably too concerned with baseball and softball again to have any time for the people whom he was actually elected to serve).
No Hugh (Don’t know what his excuse was).
*Please see correction below, Hugh Floyd was at this event
No Curt ( Although he is on The Village’s Board of Directors and only lives about five minutes from Lucky Shoals, but I am willing to let it slide -this time- because he does have regular community outreach meetings.)
The even more amazing thing to me? No Lorraine. No Charles. The two individuals vying for votes to lead the county in the future. Both no shows. The perfect opportunity for one (or both) to say “I ACTUALLY CARED ENOUGH TO SHOW UP!!” But they blew it.
My fellow Gwinnettians, our elected officials are way too comfortable. Isn’t it time they get the message that we’ve had enough? Isn’t it time we found someone to challenge each them for their seats if we really want or expect change? Who would those people be? I want to know.
Correction: Since this blog’s original post, I have been informed that Hugh Floyd was at the meeting. I regret the error.

Congressman Hank Johnson, had a free IRS workshop from 11:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M over in Decatur, he may have been there. Bert’s at Spring Traning and if there wasn’t a camera around don’t expect Lorrine to show up.
Did it occur to you that both the congress and state legislature are in session, they may have had more important business to attend to instead of a greet and meet.
Woody, I noticed that certain elected official’s had (D’s) by their names, but the Republican officials that were no shows did not? I would hate to think that it was on purpose, that you would give a slanted view to fit your political leanings.

Bruce: That was an oversight on my part. It was far from deliberate thought. Believe me… I harbor no good will toward -any- political party.
Also, I am well aware Mr. Johnson had his workshop going on… but there were other opportunities for Mr Johnson to show his appreciation for what SW Gwinnett did for him. And even if the state legislature was in session… Pete Marin showed up. He’s been at every event I have been to. Lillian Webb (when she was still Mayor and physically able) showed up.

Uh Oh, Bruce the conspiracy theorist smells something is afoot.
But wait Hugh Floyd is a Democrat and so is Pedro Marin. And they don’t have D’s after their name.
His trail of stupidity never ends.
Woody, Bruce was at Lucky Shoals Park. He likes to hang out in public restrooms for some reason.

You do realize that some of those elected officials you mentioned are paid part time officials with families and kids and other responsibilities? Should they start calling you out when you’re not sitting around in commission meetings with them until 1:00am?

Woody you are quite the simpleton. Did it ever occur to you that perhaps people with actual jobs would not be available for such a trivial event? I mean come on, the “Village” is nothing more than a polite new term coined for Gwinnett’s Ghetto. It really is quite pathetic to think that the elected officials slighted you; I am sure they didn’t. They probably just didn’t want to risk getting robbed at gun-point by a latino gang member. I mean most of the people on your list are Demon-crats, they don’t believe in fixing anything, they just throw more and more tax money down the drain into the ghetto for these parasites of society to feed on and further degrade our way of life. The Republicans on your list I am sure knew that this was nothing more than a pathetic little attempt to put lipstick on a pig, as it were. Get over it already.

CC: They chose to run for public office… making such public appearances is part of the job. Am I saying they should ignore their family/jobs and hang out before their adoring public? No… however..I dont think its alot to ask them to set aside 2 hrs once in a great while to do so.
Alexis: I do not care one flying flip what party they are in (as a matter of fact, I am not a fan of the party system at all). They choose to run for election and the voters hand them the job… then they are fair game… and they have a responsibility to tend to. If that was too much for them, then they should think twice about running again. I am not asking something that is out of the realm of the responsibility that they were elected to do.

Woody -
In this HUGE county do you have any idea how many events were taking place that afternoon?
Needless to say there were dozens.
Lashing out at officials for not attending ONE is not right. They have to pick and choose which ones they go to. Perhaps you should really be asking WHY wasn’t this event important enough for them to choose to attend?
Becoming a public official does not mean that you must sacrifice EVERY waking moment of your life.

Woody, surely you would not expect someone to risk his or her life by going down into the ghetto village district just to attend some silly little “kick-off” party. I mean even demon-crats have more sense than that. I would agree that constituents matter and they put elected officials into office; however, I would disagree that an elected official is obligated to attend every function in their district. I would argue that they are not obligated to attend any function in their district wherein they are succeptable to harm, ie. the village ghetto. Attending a social function at the Sugarloaf Country Club is one thing, attending a party in a public park in the ghetto is an entirely seperate thing. The first is something to which every politician should strive to attend, the latter something that only the poor ghetto trash are going to attend, and we all know that we don’t want to mix in with those sort of people and our politicians should feel the same way. They should care for those of us who’s influence put them in office and abide by our opinions and views.

Sam: I am not asking for every waking moment of their life… it was a 2 hr event. Oh and also, an event that takes place in arguably the one region of Gwinnett that has a large margin of disgruntled (if the comments in this blog are any indication) residents (and voters) than any other region of Gwinnett.

Alexis: Lucky Shoals Park is located next to a huge golf course, and several higher priced homes. Its hardly in the worst part of The Village. The only negative thing that can be said (that I can ever recall recently) were the attacks on women there a year or so ago. I think that is (partly) why they recently made the renovations to the part and the addition of the community center there. It is totally different than the rest of Gwinnett Village and hopefully a sign of things to come.

I don’t normally post on blogs - but, just because some elected officials don’t make Woody’s “Roll Call” certainly doesn’t mean they don’t represent their constituents. This was my schedule last Saturday March 1st -
Wake up 6 a.m., feed Otis the St. Bernard, Scooter the Mutt and Rainey the cat and leave the house by 7 a.m. and meet consituents at Waffle House for Breakfast. Arrive Pinckneyville Park at 8 a.m. and separate new softball equipment and set up equipment bags for coaches pick up. (I am the Commissioner for the Norcross Girls Softball League this year. I already had alot on my plate but no one else really stepped up to do it so I did- I have been coaching year round for the association since 2001). Hand out equipment until 9:30 a.m. meeting with parents and coaches. Leave at 9:30 and go to other side of park for 12 year old son’s roller hockey game from 10:00-11:30. 11:30 - 12:30 - attend season end team party at Dairy Queen. 12:35 p.m. meet wife at Dairy Queen who brings me 10 year old daughter for softball practice and picks up 12 year old son. 12:45 p.m. back at Pinckneyville Park to Coach 10U Girls Softball Team practice - leave park 2 p.m. - go home and pick up 12 year old son - Leave and arrive Lions Club Park in Lilburn at 3:00 for double header baseball game Berkeley v. Lilburn 12U travel baseball team. (The parents were very impressed with the recent improvements at Lions Club Park which I delivered the funding for). 5:00 p.m. - depart during first game (after arranging ride home for son)and travel to Peachtree Ridge High School for two older daughters’ (ages 15 and 16) competition dance recital. Attend recital 5:30-9:00 p.m. (Younger kids now at home with babysitter). 9:05 p.m. Depart Peachtree Ridge and go to dinner with approximately 30 parents and children from Dance Company. Arrive home 11:30 p.m.
My entire day on March 1st was spent in Gwinnett County - I was in the parks, at a school, and with children, parents, and extended families of constituents. I was literally all over District 2.
I attend multiple functions per week, every week. I manage my time and make choices where I can be and when. Every elected official does this. As to the “Village” area, I attended the grand opening of Lucky Shoals Community Center (which I delivered the funding for) in early January and spent several hours there. Afterwards, I had lunch with Representative Hugh Floyd, meeting on constituent issues and discussing upcoming issues in the legislature. I meet with Hugh Floyd and Senator Curt Thompson, and other elected officials that overlap my district, periodically. We communicate by phone and e mail regularly too. A few weeks ago I attended the CID/Village rollout plan at the Global Forum on Jimmy Carter Blvd and spoke to a large group of citizens. I left a Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau Board meeting and dinner (I serve on the GVCB board), early that evening, to ensure I would make the CID/Village meeting. I attended the Village’s late summer barbeque at Best Friend Park and I was a major sponsor - yes, I contributed to sponsor the event. I speak to or e mail with Chuck Warbington, Director and Board members of the CID several times per week. I have delivered on every financial request the CID has ever made. At all the events mentioned I saw some elected officials, but not many. Generally, I also didn’t see the same ones at each event - as we all juggle where we can be and when. I don’t assume elected officials don’t care about the Village or the CID because they miss a Village function. I just assume they are busy juggling their schedules, meeting with consitutents, and doing the things I do each day. I also assume they have some modicum of a personal and family life as one of the toughest challenges of serving in public office, is making time for family.
The Norcross Baseball/Softball Association has almost 1000 children between ages 4 and 16 playing baseball and softball this spring. I am sure the parents and families of those children appreciate folks like myself and the other parents that spend their weeknights and Saturdays volunteering their time and coaching kids. If there is one thing we need more of in this day and time, its adults spending quality time with kids - teaching, mentoring, and trying to be role models. Its somewhat amazing Mr. Bass sees no value in this and in fact mocks it.
I regularly speak in the schools, at homeowner association meetings and at multiple church events. I attend a host of school events at the Elementary, Middle and High Schools. Citizens appreciate seeing me as well as their other elected officials active in the community - all aspects of the community. They thank me for showing up at the many places I do and they regularly stop me to chat and share their thoughts and ideas on many issues.
I served on the Revitalization Task Force that brought forth the brainchild of CIDs and my work in helping the area known as the Village goes back years. I don’t recall seeing Mr. Bass at any of the CID functions my schedule did allow me to attend recently and the fact any elected official doesn’t meet Woody’s “Roll Call” when he happens to show up to one selected event, by no means indicates any elected official is ignoring any of their constituency, me included.
I manage my time, connect with my constituents and I am always available to meet with those that contact me. I get up early, stay up late, and work hard to respond to and solve constituent problems. It has always been that way, and always will be as long as I serve in public office. Last Saturday was a day that was more hectic than most, but I accomplished what I needed to that day. In the course of the day I successfully wore the hat of an elected official, a coach, a mentor, and most importantly, a father. Bert Nasuti District 2 Commissioner

Third…remember just because someone says something…doesn’t mean it’s true or has merit at all.
Forth…try not to be too harsh on Woody…this is his blog and he was only demonstrating his passion for writing and maintaining an interesting blog spot. We can’t hate on him for that…it wouldn’t be any more right than him being offended when you weren’t at the village thingy.

Woody and Bert,
How about cleaning up the graffiti at Pirkle Road and Sentinal Walk? It’s only been 6 weeks and 3 phone calls since it’s been there.
Certainly doesn’t look like Code enforcement is too interested in cleaning it up. Certainly would make for a nice Saturday photo op. Could bring Pedro Marin in too, since it is Hispanic gang graffiti.

Woody,
Here’s how to boost attendance at the local parks. Get rid of the illegals treating as their own trashcan / Outdoor drinking party.
Please call your state reps.
· (SB 170) prohibit illegal aliens from receiving state-funded social services
· (SB 172) ban illegal aliens from obtaining Georgia driver’s licenses
· (SB 171) prevent illegal aliens from taking classes at Georgia’s public colleges and universities
· (SB 169) ensure illegal aliens do not work on any state-funded projects
Governor Sonny Perdue (R-Georgia) 404-656-5030
Senate President Pro Tem Eric Johnson (R-Savannah) 404-656-5109
Senate Majority Leader Bill Stephens (R-Canton) 404-656-0048
This is truly the way to clean up GA and make reps accountable. Who cares if they go to some crappy park.

Wow, Cindy, that is a little rich don’t you think, I mean to make claims of being attacked by others, calling them cowardly and using an “anonymous posting name” like: Ya’ll R A Bunch of Crying Babies?
People have a right to voice grievances against their government in this country – well, at least for the moment. They also have the right to disagree with elected officials, sometimes very harshly but that is all part of politics like it or not. And, anyone who gets into that arena knows before ever entering politics that they will suffer many times some very harsh words and sometimes less than accurate statements made about them.
Personally, I haven’t gone after Bert in a while. I don’t agree with his ballpark deal, especially with so many problems this county has to address that I feel are more important than playing ball. He is a little too much ballgame fan for me but that too is Bert’s right and he can be as much ballgame as he wants to be.
As for making an appearance at every event some constituent deems important: Well, that might be a bit over the top. As in this case, as it turns out, Bert is more involved behind the scenes than most realize in this village business.
As for Woody, he seems simply frustrated that things are not going the way he wishes they would. All I can say to that is: You have got alot of company Woodrow, which probably includes Bert.

My apologies for this somewhat off topic rant if some see it as such about this vent item.
Show us a State law Butch Conway can enforce for someone being here illegally.
I can’t show you a state law Butch can enforce against illegal immigration but I sure as heck can show you a federal program - 287g - that he could have take part in as far back as 1996. The very year that he became Sheriff. So I have serious reason to doubt Butch is all that “excited” as was purported recently about participating in that program.
By the way, if Butch ever does take part in 287g aggressively, it will make some positive changes in the village, as well as the rest of the county.

I don’t ever post to these blogs either. I think they’re a waste of time. Like now. I’m wasting some time on this one.
I’ve been around this county for only 13 years - having moved from Brooklyn, NY. I gotta say though that there are a bunch of cry babies around here.
I’ve known Bert for at least half the time I’ve been here and I know there is NO ONE OTHER representative to government in Gwinnett that does more for his constituents. He shouldn’t need to give a detailed itinerary of his Saturday – but, I’m glad he did. Many of his friends and neighbors in Peachtree Corners knows his commitment to his family, church, community and his jobs. He has done a tremendous job as a county commissioner. He always puts 150% into his work. He is passionate about what he does. He actually cares about the people that he represents.
He would answer my emails at 1 or 2 in the morning – because that was when the family was asleep. He actually enjoys getting things done and improving our lives in Gwinnett. The fact is that the commissioner’s job doesn’t pay enough for the hours he puts in it. Quite frankly the commissioner’s job has more of an impact on our lives locally than the local representatives to the state capital. One day Bert would make a great Chairman – he actually has a vision for this county. But, he won’t. He likes what he’s doing and, besides, where would he fit it in?

Also, I should note (I found out this morning) that Hugh Floyd was in attendance, late, but he showed up.

LT: Can you give me some basic directions to that intersection please? From I-85 or a major road is fine. I can’t find where Pirkle and Sentinel meet (and specifically where the graffiti is at). I’d like to see that and take some pics along with other issues that were reported and follow up on them. Thank you.

Amen to Bert, Lorraine, and Mike, the three voices of competence on the BOC.
Regarding Butch Conway and the 287(g) program, his basic options are as follows:
Continue to beg for funding to overcome his current severe manpower shortages. Note that in the past Bannister has tried to slice his budget further, but was outvoted by the other commissioners.
Divert officers to 287(g) training and implementation, thus breaking state law, endangering inmates and the public, and welcoming lawsuits galore.
Pay millions in overtime, back to option 1.
Hopefully y’all noticed that Bannister made a motion to study 287(g) but then immediately TABLED his own motion – WTF?
Hey LT - since we learned to use a paintbrush, we paint out graffiti ourselves. Failing that, Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful should be contacted.

Whew - better not get started on Chuck Bannister. With long time business partner and political advisor Bill McKinney in his corner, his bag of dirty campaign tricks will likely be opened soon. The Bannister posse also includes a well known hair trigger tempered DUI poster child and Wal-Mart’s best friend Shirley Lasseter, not to mention his infamous stooges John Dunn and Butch Poss. A fine political season is ahead of us.

Sometimes Paul you have to rock the boat even when those around you say you are wrong to do the things you know that are right. Butch is an elected official. The BOC may control his budget but he is answerable to “we the people” who voted him into office. Butch had and still does have another option he chose not to use in regard to 287g and that is going directly to the people, the voters, in Ronald Reagan fashion. I’m not buying this: “What he [Butch] couldn’t do business”. It simply does not hold up. Butch has been in office as Sheriff, as long as 287g has been in effect.
Yes, Paul, I did notice Bannister’s grandstanding on this issue. In Fact, I emailed the Chairman recently - no response - (which included Butch and several others) to confront him on one of his statements: “It is time to take action”, said Bannister. “This is a common sense measure - 287g - that will allow law enforcement to begin deportation proceedings on illegal immigrants who threaten our families.”
Well, Mr. Chairman, I’m saying this again now publically: What was wrong with the “TIME” four years ago after you were elected, Mr. Bannister? You could have taken action then. The problem of illegal immigration was no less serious then, than right now.
Both these gentlemen are doing a political boogie-woogie on 287g and I’m calling them on it, though, members of our “diligent press” choose not to.
By Bruce Wilcox

It seemed like only a few short years ago that Chuck Bannister was the savior of Gwinnett and voted in to replace an incompetent Republican Chairman? Now Lorraine gets the nod to be the new savior of Gwinnett to replace the last savior of Gwinnett Chuck Bannister who is now labeled an incompetent chairman? It’s a good news/bad news type of story, good news is, you’ll never run out of Republicans to fill the position, the bad news, you’ll never run out of incompetence either.
All the members of the BOC voted behind closed doors to allow the Braves to dictate where the stadium will be build, who will maintain it and who will fund what amounts to a private playground for a minor league team. Every commissioner stomped on open government and public input, but the lemmings still sing their praises on high.
Commissioner Beaudreau had the nerve to say this when speaking of restoring the funding to the libraries, “Given our revenue shortfalls, I believe we need to proceed with an abundance of caution,”, Sure Mike, watch that wasteful spending on those pesty libraries while funding a private baseball park and the only reason it was restored is because the state would have cut funding.
Butch likes to have it both ways, he brags about his record of turning over 360 illegals last year without the program, but now he crys he doesn’t have the manpower? If he couldn’t handle the job he shouldn’t have run.
Lorraines Quality of Life Unit is MIA, but I’ll lay down money they’ll appear in force just before the election.
Bert and I have had many a “spirited discussion”, we always know where each other stands. Bert will always return my phone call or e-mail even when we disagree, I respect that.
Hi Chuck, what a surprise to see you parroting Paul, here’s a hint for you, let a few comments seperate you from Pauls, you wouldn’t want to be taken for a lapdog would you?

To All:
I was one of the planners of this event. I worked extremely hard getting press and people to attend this event. I woke up around 7:30 and headed to an out of business taco store to blow up and tie all those Balloons. I worked hard making this Kick Off Event happen and guess what???? I had to leave at 1:30 to attend a wedding. Things do come up and being at everything is not always possible. Mr Bannister let us know in advance that he would be unable to attend the event, just so that can be cleared up.
Thanks to those that showed up and the 750 people in the Village that gave their name’s to create a database. We have the forming of a new Civic organization of which Curt has already stated he would help with the legal end, when we get that far. The Mayor and Council of Norcross have been extremely helpful and supportive of this project from day one.
Thanks for you time.

I have to agree with Bruce on this one.
We can discuss…even debate one another and still do it in a civil manner.
It’s easy and even tempting sometimes to insult and berate someone on the internet (whether it be fellow bloggers or the people that are being discussed), especially with the anonymity we have, but it’s no pleasure to be on the receiving end of it.
I’m guilty of it too. Sorry ya’ll. It’s not classy and it doesn’t make me look intelligent.

Cindy have you noticed no one has challenged anything I said? That’s the biggest problem with this little group, they love to present themselves as the real insiders and all they have become are jokes.
At one time their leader had some integrity, he fought hard for change and the community. One sad day he was invited over to a commissioners home for tea, sad what some people will do for a pat on the head and a title, after that the commssioners can do no wrong. And his little group of followers will protect him as you can see.
I keep informed and know more than some, this is what bothers the hug group the most, how can he, for he is not an insider?
As far as going somewhere, I am a proud New York Yankee Liberal who doesn’t like this Southern p***-footing around. I will continue to point out how badly we’re getting shafted by the commissioners. My integrity cannot be taken away by a tea and pat on the head.
Now I wish all those telling me how bad or wrong I am refute anything I have said, it is all that simple.

Bruce, Remember when you said I could benefit from a civics class? (if we had emoticons to use here, i’d opt for the embarrassed face) Well, you called that one correctly…it’s a fact…I haven’t kept up. But I do have the desire to know…who is the leader of which you speak? I can’t follow what you’re saying if I only pretend to understand, so I don’t appear stupid. Ignorant, yes. Stupid, never-ever. :) Thanks.
p.s. I don’t like tea anyway. grr.

Paul, always followed closely behind by Chuck, the others with the little insults, just camp followers.
Paul one time actually looked up my address and told me what a terrible neighborhood I live in, why Paul amde it sound like we a gunfight down on main street every night at sundown. Being the nice guy I am, I extended an invitation to Paul, told him to bring a commissioner or two along, I wasn’t going to offer tea, but a walk around my neighborhood for Paul could point out where all these terrible people live. Paul never took up the offer, nor any commissioner?
Some peoples ego’s get as big as their mouths, when confronted, they slink off into the sunset.

Hmmm. Quite the dynamic this blog has…it’ll take a little time to figure out if I even have a seat at this table or not. It’s quite possible that I’m simply in over my head.
Thanks for answering my questions. :)

Stick around Cindy, all input is important, that’s how change occurs. Just don’t let anyone bully you.

I’ll give it a shot Bruce. I’m all for the “not getting bullied” idea.
I’m happy to learn, listen, discuss, debate and fill up terabytes of storage space doing it…it’s all the insults and negativity that runs me off quicker than anything.

“Code Enforcement” doesn’t clean up or cover up graffiti…that is up to the property owner. Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful notifies the property owner (once they are made aware of the graffiti). Who were the three phone calls made to? I’ll bet you $50 it wasn’t GC&B.
