Quit talking about immigration problems and do something!

If your comments to this blog last week are any indication, illegal immigration is on a lot of minds these days as Congress debates the bipartisan immigration reform bill.

“What can we do about it?” was a common question.

You’ve called and written your representatives to voice your concerns and frustrations. Some who attended the Georgia Republican Convention last month at the Gwinnett County Civic Center booed and hissed when Saxby Chambliss expressed his support for the bill.

Clearly your letters, calls and boos proclaiming your dissatisfaction are not enough. They are certainly needed and a good start, but that is obviously not changing minds.

In my blog last week I told “LB” that it would take a lot more for that to happen:

“An out right revolt and a series of protests of thousands in front of the county commission, the Gold Dome downtown and other elected officials offices.” (Let me add to that “around the entire country.”)

One other suggestion revolves around what I consider to be the root of all evil: Money.

You gotta hit the companies that are hiring illegal immigrants where it hurts.

I am talking about an outright boycott. Quit buying their homes, products or services. Don’t buy their stocks, and don’t forget to check your 401k and mutual funds and see if they are listed there too.

And whatever you do, don’t forget to call their investor relations departments and tell them why you are doing this.

If the companies listen and react I think that illegal immigrants probably will not have a reason to come here or stay if they cannot make money.

Gwinnett Commissioner Lorraine Green wants contractors hired by the county to verify that their employees can work in the United States legally. (Hmm…just the county’s contractors?)

The proposed ordinance will be discussed at public hearings on June 19 (that’s tomorrow by the way) and 26. It will be put to a vote on June 26. That would be a good time to show up in numbers and get your point across.

I wish I could believe otherwise, but I don’t think any of you are really serious about change.

Can you prove me wrong this week?
