Should alcohol be prohibited in some Lawrenceville pool halls?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In Lawrenceville, you’ll be able to have a drink but not in a pool hall. Not if the city council approves a proposal that would require businesses with more than two pool tables to stop serving alcohol. The council debated the proposal Monday (Sept. 10) but made no final decision. It’s not the first time this issue has surfaced. Share your opinion. Should alcohol be prohibited in some Lawrenceville pool halls?

Whose stupid idea was this? Do we prohibit bears from taking a dump in the woods?

Of course not. Get religious laws off our backs once and for all.

It sounds like the typical local governmental reaction to a problem: overreact, enact a ban much wider than the original problem warrants, then spend years trying to defend the indefensible, and finally overturn the ban years after the original problem has been forgotten.

I agree with the ban. We should also ban dancing and that evil rock music. That will certainly solve all our problems.

As a resident of Lawrenceville, I agree with the ban. Thanks Lawrenceville City Council and Judy Johnson!

Yes, they should ban it. They should also affix scarlet letters to the chests of all who drink alcohol. I just got my scarlet “D”, and let me tell you it goes with just about anything.
This is what we get for living in a region that has more churches than schools. High five!

City councilwoman Judy Johnson strikes again!! I can think of so many other issues much more important to our quality of life in Lawrenceville than serving beer in pool halls. Judy Johnson has her own personal agenda and she uses her position abusively. She harassed my family by trying to have an old house on our property condemned twice, even though we had a permit to tear the house down and were in the process of doing so. I urge everyone to VOTE NO FOR JUDY JOHNSON !!!!!

Come on!!!! There is so much to do in Lawrenceville for fun, why do we need beer drinking pool players - NOT!!!! Leave the patrons alone and let people have their fun. So what if once or twice a year the police need to be called out. Does that not happen at other establishments in the city???? Go away Judy Johnson

Does anyone else find it interesting or disturbing that Judy Johnson’s family owned the building at 179 Crogan Street back to around 1908??? I don’t know who owns it now but,179 Crogan Street is where the Lil River Grill is currently located, which is one of the downtown businesses that Johnson approves of having a license to serve. How many of you know that our former Mayor Bobby Sikes pushed the renewal of Historic Downtown Lawrenceville (while the rest of Lawrenceville turned into empty buildings and Mexican strip malls)and his kids Bobby and Susan own shops on the square. I think we need educate ourselves and use our votes wisely..

Check out the Lawrenceville Neighborhood Alliance web page, LawrencevilleNA.org, for issues related to the city of Lawrenceville and agendas coming before the city council and planning commission. Downtown still needs work, but the neighborhoods need it right now.

BTW, LisReev, Emory Morseberger owns the building at 179 Crogan Street and about half of the rest of downtown. Things seem to have stopped on some of the proposed renovations. McCrays Tavern is months late and way over budget from what I hear.

Hey Bud, yes I read about Mr Morseberger. He buys up all the property at rock bottom prices, then starts a non profit organization to receive tax free donations to fix up his property and sell it at a profit.Pretty nice set up I’d say. Thanks for the info…

LisReev, what koolaid have you been drinking. Maybe you should stay away from the pool halls. I don’t think that the “Morseberger Group” is a non-profit and I don’t think he’s exactly made huge profits downtown. If a man can buy property at a low price and sell it high, then good for him, anyways. That’s the America I live in.
BTW, I just assume we not become the next Norcross/Buford Hwy. Good job on the ban.

Hey Fred, Read this and do some research on your own about Mr Morsberger (correct spelling). I didn’t say that the Morsberger Group is non profit, I said he started a non profit org to revitalize downtown, it’s called The Lawrenceville Improvement Association.
By the way I haven’t been in a pool hall in 20 years but it ain’t my place to tell folks they can’t go and play a game and drink alcohol if they want and it sure ain’t the city council’s place to do so either.

LisReev, Morsberger bought 179 Crogan from Rod Oakes/Planet Wallstreet after a fire gutted the downstairs. Do your research. Quit trying to spread garbage. Do you honestly think that the improvements downtown are negative? Jealousy doesn’t become you.
