Why is Georgia Gwinnett College desperately seeking students?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Lawrenceville’s Georgia Gwinnett College opens its doors to freshmen on its 205-acre campus off Ga. 316 in August.
More than 3,000 were expected, but so far it has only admitted 435 students. With 81 faculty already in place, that works out to about five students to every professor.
Attracting students to a new, unknown college has proved somewhat tricky. College representatives hit dozens of college fairs and visited every Gwinnett high school to drum up interest. They set up shop in the Mall of Georgia next to the food court and bought advertising at movie theaters.
Georgia Gwinnett is not yet accredited, meaning it can’t offer students federal financial aid. School officials submitted a 1,700-page accreditation application to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in March, and had hoped to earn candidacy status, which would allow students to get grants and loans, at the accrediting body’s December meeting. The regional group, which accredits colleges in 11 Southern states, meets twice a year.
Why do you think the college hasn’t had more students enroll?

With the drought should Lawrenceville have July 4 fireworks?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
June 9, 2007
So far, Gwinnett residents don’t have to worry about canceled fireworks for the Fourth of July. But organizers of Independence Day celebrations realize it’s a possibility.
The Gwinnett County Fire Department does not expect to recommend canceling the pyrotechnic displays, unlike the Roswell Fire Department, which said it will call off the fireworks unless rain breaks the drought.
As of Friday, officials said that Independence Day fireworks shows in Braselton, Buford, Duluth, Lawrenceville, Stone Mountain and Sugar Hill are going forth as planned. The planner for Norcross’ fireworks show could not be reached Friday.
Various officials said that there had been discussions about the drought and the fireworks, which could pose a fire hazard in dry conditions.
With the ongoing drought do you think Lawrenceville should have a fireworks show on July 4?

Does the doubled homicide rate in Gwinnett concern you?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Violence in Gwinnett County has claimed more than twice as many lives so far this year as it did in the first five months of 2006.
There had been nine homicides in Gwinnett County by the end of May 2006, police said. The count stands at 19 dead over the same period this year, according to Gwinnett County medical examiner’s office records. Those figures include two incidents where a police officer shot someone. One man died in a police shootout near Lawrenceville on New Year’s Day, and another died after a standoff in March.
“The two biggest factors in our homicides are - and have always been - drugs and domestic violence, ” said Cpl. Darren Moloney, a Gwinnett County police spokesman. “Despite these facts, we do not notice any particular trends and it is too early in the year for any predictions.”
