Why is Georgia Gwinnett College desperately seeking students?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Lawrenceville’s Georgia Gwinnett College opens its doors to freshmen on its 205-acre campus off Ga. 316 in August.
More than 3,000 were expected, but so far it has only admitted 435 students. With 81 faculty already in place, that works out to about five students to every professor.
Attracting students to a new, unknown college has proved somewhat tricky. College representatives hit dozens of college fairs and visited every Gwinnett high school to drum up interest. They set up shop in the Mall of Georgia next to the food court and bought advertising at movie theaters.
Georgia Gwinnett is not yet accredited, meaning it can’t offer students federal financial aid. School officials submitted a 1,700-page accreditation application to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in March, and had hoped to earn candidacy status, which would allow students to get grants and loans, at the accrediting body’s December meeting. The regional group, which accredits colleges in 11 Southern states, meets twice a year.
Why do you think the college hasn’t had more students enroll?

Face it, without being accredited it is a tough draw. I’ve been to the campus, and it is going to have some top notch facilities, however I still hate the name. It just sounds like another community junior college. It is a long term process, and I think once a few classes get in and graduate, then people will get more excited to attend.
I think it is a good long term benefit to the Central Gwinett/Lawrenceville area. However, if we don’t plan for it, then we’ll be in a reactionary mode once the school does take off and we have 8,000 to 10,000 students living here during the school year.
Plan now, so we can prosper later!

Why pay the same amount for an education that han not been accredited, when you have so many colleges in the area. Once the red tape is gone, it will fill up with eager kids that are not ready to move out yet.

I was actually thinking of enrolling to GGC but I noticed that they are not accredited with Georgia so I feel that is a serious deciding factor for prospective students. We are looking for a school that can provide us a good education but post graduation we need a degree that companies will recognize. Until then they will have a problem with enrollment. I do not feel the freshness of the school really matters. Just one thought from one man.
