It’s college recruiting time in Lawrenceville. But not for super quick running backs or six-footers with mean jump shots.
Instead, top recruits should excel in expounding on integration of exponential and logarithmic functions. Or be able to speed through all things in modular programming including subprograms or the equivalent of such.
What’s this you say?
Not quite the specialty of a potential Heisman Trophy candidate, right?
True. These are just a few tidbits of planned studies in general college calculus and the basics of Computer Science, course offerings available at Georgia Gwinnett College.
But the course catalog probably isn’t the hottest spot on the GGC web site right now. Running in full-on recruitment mode these days, GGC is advertising for a whole lot of faculty jobs.
Help wanted: those who can explain what the heck is a logarithmic function or who specialize in world literature from the mid-seventeenth century to the present. We need profs!
GGC is currently recruiting faculty across many college disciplines (mathematics, English, foreign languages, business, natural sciences, psychology, etc., etc., etc.). All of these open positions are listed on their web site along with instructions for applying and the notation that review of applications begins November 20.
You may remember that in 2005 GGC became Georgia’s newest state college, the first since 1970. Their next first: the first official freshmen class enters next August. Hence the wide range of faculty positions available in anticipation of thousands appearing in their classrooms, labs, offices and halls.
Last month groundbreaking ceremonies introduced the world to GGC’s planned 24,000-plus square foot academic building that will hold classrooms, computer labs, a 300-seat auditorium and faculty offices for those who pass next week’s review of applications.
Too bad I never earned a doctorate. No, there’s no framed Ph.D. diploma sitting on my fireplace mantle right now, only cheap scented candles from Target that mean nothing when applying for a job. Too bad, because then I could have applied for a faculty position at GGC, a mere five minutes from my Lawrenceville abode.
Sure, this location is attractive to me because I live here. But will lecturing in Lawrenceville appeal to faculty in faraway places or at larger schools?
Will Georgia Gwinnett College really be able to recruit top-notch teachers with impressive credentials to come to this yet-to-be-complete suburban campus in the rural South?

I don’t think you will see tenured professors from other institutions of higher learning rushing to teach at Georgia Gwinnett College.
However, I think you will see many bright young rising stars apply. In other institutions, they are using a lot of contract professors and it is hard, if not impossible, to become a full professor with job security. Since Georgia Gwinnett College is offering this opportunity, it should be very attractive to a lot of bright young talent.

Speaking as a GGC student, I’m certainly hopeful that they will, since several of the professors there already have very strong backgrounds in their fields (I’m a Psych student). I attended Kennesaw State University previously and I had multiple professors there who were not only new to the school but to teaching as well, and I am hopeful that the professors coming on board at GGC will be of a decent background even with it being a new college campus.
