What should Georgia Gwinnett College’s mascot be?

Georgia Gwinnett College has students, faculty and classrooms. Now it needs a mascot.

The new school can’t take one used by another college in the state, so it’s taking nominations from the public to find a mascot.

Here are some of our ideas: Georgia Gwinnett Buttons, in honor of Button Gwinnett; Georgia Gwinnett Mallers, because the campus is near the Mall of Georgia; and Georgia Gwinnett Green Knights to match the school’s signature color of Georgia Gwinnett Green.

Have ideas? Let us know what you think the new mascot should be.

I think the new mascot should be the “Georgia Gwinnett Retrievers” with a picture of a dark golden retriever depicting the diversity of Gwinnett and the retriever showing the ability for the team to keep the ball and score.

The Georgia Gwinnett Mussel Savers. It would show our unending support of the Chattahoochee Mussel, and let the world know that we will even give up live saving water for ourselves to save the poor little bivalve mollusks. We could even use the same gesture with the giant closing arms that Florida uses to represent the Gators. And no water could be used during basketball games. Go Mussel Savers!!

How about Georgia Gwinnett Pirates. Kind of close to the water (not the ocean but the biggest lake in the metro area) or maybe the Georgia Gwinnett Crusaders. or maybe since Gwinnett is one of America’s fastest growing counties, similar to the growth of grass; we can try Georgia Gwinnett Grasshoppers.

For the new mascot I think that the GEORGIA GWINNETT BULLETS are a great name because it is catchy and a bullet is a fierce and unusual mascot. Even a little dangerous( and I think taking a risk with a mascot name is interesting, especially for a new school)

The mascot should be the PHOENIX! It symbolizes rebirth and renewal, which is what many people go on to higher learning to attain.

Or better yet, the “GHiPs” (prononced “jips”). Like everyone’s favorite show, CHiPs…And for all the State Highway Patrol that scour the I-85 corridor. Or possibly for the fact that the students aren’t going to a “campus” school, like many of the other State University System Schools and may feel they’ve “been jipped” out of a college experience. Too harsh? Who cares at this point. I don’t think a “rallying point” is necessary for this school. The need is there, and it’s growing…Hey that’s an idea…The Gwinnett College “Sprawl.” Done deal!

Red Sticks

The Creek Indians, who inhabited Gwinnett County and North Georgia before the Europeans came, were known as the “Red Sticks”.

The Red Sticks aggressively and bravely fought the expansion of the settlers, although they were badly outgunned and outmanned.

Go Red Sticks!
