What are Gwinnett’s big issues for 2008?

From new political leaders to redeveloped traffic interchanges a lot will transpire in Gwinnett County next year.

Our reporters have shared their thoughts on the biggest issues but what about yours? What will folks in Gwinnett be talking about come 2008?

Hottest issue: How will the County Commission respond to the increasing impact of illegal aliens on our community and our public services? Will they unite to adopt aggressive ordinances designed to protect legal residents and our economy or will they become mired in political infighting, kowtowing to the usual development interests?

Biggest issue: The slowing economy, rising cost of government services, and the Commission’s refusal to capture non-tax revenue sources like impact fees… again, for the usual reasons.

My concern is that, because of the upcoming elections, neither issues will be adequately addressed this year. The Commission Chairman’s race, especially, will determine whether or not these issues are finally addressed in 2009 or we experience four more years of unimaginative leadership and inaction.

Hot issues: Illegal aliens, slump in the housing market, debacle in the finical sector, rising fuel and healthcare costs, traffic congestion and which course to pursue in delivering rapid rail.

Very important issues: Water, economic development, redeveloping cities including older areas of the county and the growth of government.

Biggest issue confronting county government: Declining tax revenue due to several contributing factors in less building and construction, possible decline in property values, absence of middle level income job creation within the county.

Dumbest idea: Brining MARTA into Gwinnett County.

Politicians on the hot seat: Charles Bannister, Butch Conway and Glenn Richardson.

The commission needs to make a decision regarding english on store fronts. If you don’t speak Korean you can’t shop in Duluth. That is also starting on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road. It excludes people that may spend money in Gwinnett county. We are not going to reap any tax dollars if citizens stop shopping in the area because they don’t have a clue as to what is on sale. The citizens of Gwinnett who can not read the signs will just move on to other counties to shop.

Hot issues: illegal immigrants and their strain on the government and the school system; the slump in housing sales; and MARTA.

We’re hearing more and more each day about the rise in crime in Gwinnett; bring in MARTA and it’s bound to get worse. Nothing good will come of bringing that system here. The people that clog up 85 and 316 each morning will continue to do so because they won’t feel that MARTA is safe to ride. What it will do, unfortunately is push some people out of the county as others come in.

Illegal imigrants AKA criminals. Gwinnett is a sanctuary county. If this is not addressed by the county government soon, letting them freely live here and using government services without paying income and other taxes, than the legal Gwinnett residents will throw the bums (county commission) out this November!

Hottest Issue - handling illegal aliens.

Intelligence test - Will voters show Chairman Bannister the door? He’s done the impossible - made us think Wayne Hill wasn’t all that bad.

Gwinnett has many issues: increasing crime, which seems to get worse yearly is the biggest. Immigration of course, which nothing will be done about is second. And has anyone noticed about the only jobs available are in retail or fast food? Any what person doesn’t have issues with traffic, lousy roads, lack of co-ordinated lights and left turn lights at intersections?
