I have two 63 gallon Rain Barrels hooked to my gutters! And I am going to get two more to link with those. As it is, even when it rains just a little, it fills them up, which is enough to keep my container plants and fragile yard plants watered in between rains. Try it! And of course, conserving water in general. Have not watered the lawn at all since August I think. Conserving inside where I can.

Holds my nose because of Kris… Damn you must be from France or something lol I’ve been turning off the bathroom sink whenever I brush my teeth and back on for rinsing for several years now so it’s not that much of an adjustment. Recently, I have been using the same method in the shower. I thought I came up with something new until I heard that’s how people shower in the Navy. Silly Me Huh?

4 connected 55gal. rain barrels. All plants, trees, bushes, etc. have all been watered by a buried drip system which has given them more drought-resistent deep roots.

Consider this point since we’re on the subject of water. Have you ever heard of a private company running out of its main or only product? Can you imagine a lumber company ever running out of wood?

Why have we let government control the ownership and distribution of water. When the Soviet central command controlled the distribution of food, what they had were shortages and long lines. New York city gets its water through gigantic pipes that come hundreds of miles down from the Hudson Valley. LosAngeles gets its water from the California Aqueduct which starts over 500 miles away in the northern Sierra Nevada mountains. In addition, local wells get water from the underground aquifers under the city and suburbs.

Meanwhile, the useless in our state, city, and county governments tell us that “unexpected climate change” has caught them off guard. Non-stop, rampant development without the benefit of impact fees to pay for upgrades over the last 20 years I’m sure had no impact on the available water supply. Constant advertising to the business communties all over the country that Atlanta has cheap housing, cheap water and cheap electricity, all courtesy of the TVA I’m sure had nothing to do with the population growth and overconsumption of the water for the past 20 years. Yes, caught off guard doing everything except what they should have been doing.

Mayor Franklin was the source of the “climate change” excuse. She of course is just the current, in a long list of corrupt Atlanta mayoral administrations that has ignored the 100+ year old crumbling water system and combined storm water/sewer system that continues to pollute what little fresh water we have. She certainly is not 100% to blame for the problems. Thanks to a judge things are finally getting done under her watch, but the fact that she has the nerve to blame mother nature for the failings of government only shows why nothing has ever gotten done. Private enterprise would have seen long ago that this area was going to need more water to match its growning population, and would have seen that as a profit opportunity. Get investors based on future profits and start building underground pipelines from Macon and from the mountains of Tennessee.

Instead, the government flounders, takes your water money and spends it on stuff you don’t want all just to buy votes. Meanwhile the system still leaks as much as 40% of the water it carries and you and I will be reduced to bathing with bottled water.

The next time someone suggests that things like roads, water, electricity, and the like are too big to be handled by “private enterprise,” you just remember this water crisis and remember that private companies never run out of the product they sell - only governments do.

They lie! There is plenty of water! (I sell it for $1 per gallon … how much do you want delivered on a daily basis?)

Now, if and only if you want to conserve; remember, “If it’s yellow, let it mellow; if it’s brown, flush it down.”

When you shower or wash your hands in the lavitory, prevent the water from going down the drain. Route your laundry water to a 500 gallon tank (as you know, top loaders use 40 gallons per load while front loaders use about 12 gallons per load.) Save all of this ‘grey water’ and use it to flush the toilets or watering your lawn.

Oh, you don’t want to spend your time doing this??? OK, then run out of water. :)

There is no drought. When will you all stop believing the propaganda? The drought is a liberal scheme being concocted by the Army Corps Of Engineers to wring the pockets of the three impacted states because their budget keeps getting cut and money diverted to the War On Terror. The Corps Of Engineers is jealous of the real soldiers getting the funding to fight the evil, and therefore have created this “drought” situation to get more funding for them — they have already admitted they can reduce the water releases by sixteen percent with no ill effects. It’s all a bunch of nonsense, so I continue to water my lawn, water my plants, have my fountains running and I don’t collect “grey water” — just the thought of re-using water is gross!

Well I am building a strip mall on every corner I can find. Also building condos between the strip malls. I also have service to import illegals into the area to use the water that is supposed to be for American taxpaying citizens. And I will pee on the lawn to water it and offset the growth that is desperately needed.

Mr Liberty…. Very well spoken…. Kudos to you! An interesting question…..why in all of this turmoil about lack of water has there been no more mention of the Big Aqueduct project that was in the news earlier this year. They even had Shirley Franklin portrayed as the big hero that was resposible for this being built. What’s happenned to that I wonder?

I was being very diligent about taking shorter showers, washing dishes by hand, etc. But after finding out that the powers-that-be have decided to start releasing MORE water out of Allatoona to send to Alabama, I’m reconsidering my efforts. Evidently, all of the dry lakebed I’ve been seeing has been my imagination.

Hi. The current water crisis in Georgia is nothing new to us. We moved here from Pennsylvania almost 23 years ago, and have been collectors of rainwater runoff from roofs since well before then. In the short amount of time that rain fell in our north-Georgia community two weeks or so ago, we collected 176 gallons of water. For the first time in 2 months, I washed my car this weekend, and the wife watered some of her plantings. The car wash used only 7 gallons. In lieu of our own assessment of long-term weather forecasts, as well as the more recent advisories from local & state officials, we have significantly expanded our collection system. Water conservation is going to be a new way of life for many, but is something we must learn to do. We’re spoiled as Americans, and waste way too many resources that should be recycled. If the long-term weather forecasts I’ve been reading come true, we are in for a long spell of this; we’d better get used to it and begin making alternative plans now… not after things have gotten much worse. “The government” is not going to do what we should be doing for ourselves. WE… are the government, and WE are responsible for our own families, and for the collateral liabilities for taking action as well as not doing so. If 2008 is as dire as some suggest it might be, hold onto your hat.

Dang Alexis, if I wanted to hear an A*******HOLE speak, I would just fart.

By Alexis

John, honestly. Was that the least bit called for, comparing me to flatulant noise? I think not. If you are embarassed about being a homosexual then that shows promise, perhaps it isn’t too late for you to turn your back on that sinful lifestyle and embrace God and accept his Grace. God does not love sin, and to continue to be homosexual makes you not only a sinner, but by failing to accept repentence, you become the sin and lose God’s Grace. If you can reject your evil lifestyle God’s arms will welcome you home. Please, you show that you are embarassed by being called a homosexual, so repent and walk away from that evil, sinful lifestyle of putrid and vile acts against nature.

My wife and I already do a fairly good job of conserving water, something we were both brought up to do. We have efficient toilets with 2-stage flushers, we both take relatively short showers, don’t use the dishwasher or washer until we have a full load (and then we use reduced settings), the only time we’ve run our lawn sprinklers is when our grass started looking crispy, and I’ve not washed my car since I purchased it in 1996 (and I don’t think my wife has washed hers since we moved down here to Georgia three years ago).

Folks not taking similar action need to get with the program… It isn’t that hard to make some very simple behavioral adjustments.

*DO NOT FLUSH EVERY TIME YOU PEE !!! YOU CAN FLUSH AFTER THE THIRD OR FOURTH TIME!! * This is something that I learned from friends in South Florida, years ago. If you have a BM, for goodness shakes, FLUSH! Other wise you can go all day without flushing. This may be good for the enviroment as not as much sewer water is put into the system, and the streams, rivers, and ocean. This is not what my mother taught me many years, nor is my wife pleased with it. It may work better for males than for females. However, this will save more water than buying the new style toilets that save water, but have to be flushed, two or three times to get the toilet paper to go down the drain. Thanks, Homer

Alexis - I thought this was the blog on the current GA drought? When did this become a gay bashing, church blog? I’m not gay but I’m not going to judge those who are. I don’t need to see it just as they don’t need to see what I do behind closed doors.

Anyway - I continue to turn off my water while brushing and such. With only 3 people in my home (2 of which are children so I’m sure Alexis will bash me for being a single mom), we don’t use that much water.

I gave up on this whole water crisis. I told my apartment complex when I first moved in that something was wrong with my hot water heater. That was in June. It is still not fixed and I everyday cold water is going down the drain in hopes of some hot coming out. And don’t get me started on the toilets they refuse to acknowledge that do not flush properly. It’s not like they want to conserve water or anything by fixing these things.

Southern Energy Solutions in Marietta, Georgia, is a dealer of the Brac Greywater Recycling System. It takes in household greywater (bath/shower/laundry water), filters and treats it, then send it on demand for toilet flushing. By reusing greywater for toilet flushing, homeowners can save 30% or more on potable water use.

The Brac Greywater Recycling System installs more easily in new construction or major renovation of homes because of plumbing considerations.

I am not worried. In fact, when brushing my teeth, I not only leave my water running, I also lean over and turn on the water in my wife’s sink and then I go turn on the shower with no intention of getting in. I replaced my front-load washing machine with a water-guzzling top loader that has hoses that leak. I wash my dog daily and my cars twice a day. That is how I am helping.

There are some neat suggestions and observations appearing in this thread. The more people who contribute to it, the more everyone can benefit.

Be wary of retailers trying to sell stuff for the sake of making a profit without thought. One retailer is selling a barrel with a rain-collection kit for something in the $70-range. With a bit of research, barrels can be had for as little as $5 to $15. For some applications, this would work just fine, but for directly capturing water off a roof, IMHO, it’s a disaster. For one, the tap at the bottom is so close to the ground, that without building a heavy support for it (additional cost, not to mention design & fab), getting the water out will be problematic. Secondly, you will want to clean the barrel out down the road, and a bung-top won’t let you do this thoroughly. Thirdly, plan on prefiltering the water from your roof (or whatever).

In my years I have served as an engineering technician and as an engineer/designer. I been exposed to countless designs for all kinds of things, and have 40+ years experience as a pro ‘DIY-er’, along with extensive knowledge of materials, adhesives, hardware, hydraulics, and so forth. While always open to new suggestions and listening to how others have solved problems, I know some things that work and some that don’t. Let the buyer beware.

If I see a few posts indicating interest, I may take the time to post one or more fairly easy & affordable suggestions here.

Just shower every other day, and wash up the other days. Take a empty mouthwash bottle and fill it up with water and put it in the water tank of your toilet. Don’t flush toilet until 2 or 3 pees. Take four minutes showers. Turn off water when brushing teeth. Wash and rinse hands quickly. Do not use dishwasher if possible, hand wash dishes. Rinse dishes quickly with less water. These are some of the things that everybody can do to conserve water.

We just received our water bill and we reduced usage 50% from last month! It takes a long time for hot water to make it to the shower, so we’ve slowed the flow and use buckets to collect water for plant watering; showers are also shorter and we reduce water flow. Also, we don’t always flush. When we lived in the Carribean and relied on rain water as our only supply, there was a saying: “in this land of sun and fun, we never flush for number 1.” It saves a lot of water every day — and the dogs don’t drink from the toilets any more!

The grass and outdoor plants are dead (there’s always next year); we even pulled the plug on our vegatable garden (again, there’s aways next year); but the houseplants are thriving as we re-use the shower water for them.

Dogs and cats share a drinking bowl. We’ll get a fake christmas tree this year, so as not to worry about watering it.

We flush every other time; my husband and I shower together every morning. Cars are dirty outside, but clean inside, and the exterior of the house is dirty. So what. It’s just not that big of a deal.

Minor details, and small things, but we are doing our part. We have always been conservers, and have showered together forever.

I used to work with an asian guy who bathed once a week. He stank so bad, that any time he came into my office, I had to hold my breath then spray Fabreeze. I would literally gag when he walked away. I don’t think it had anything to do with conserving, it was just his “cheapness” that he didn’t want to pay for the water. He lives in a trailer, with no running water, no electricity and certainly no air conditioning. Imagine the oder on this guy when the temps were up in the 100’s this past summer. OMG!!!

Nor would I ever use that term as it is very low-brow. Senator Craig is a homosexual and will suffer the wrath of God for his sins. As for the “crazy people in Kansas” — Westboro Baptist Church is a strong organization and Pastor Phelps is a good man. He recognizes what homosexuality is doing to this country and he stands up against it. He is truly doing God’s work and should be applauded. I have stood there beside him, in Asheville, NC, to protest the homosexual perversion in that city when the play “Laramie Project” was playing there. I would proudly stand with him again. He is a true patriot and knows that America is suffering the wrath of God.

I for one will never lower myself to the level of tree hugging liberal hippie scum. There is no environmental crisis. Any perceived drought is the product of liberal propaganda; and in the off chance that the drought does it exist, as I have said before, it would be part of God’s divine retribution against America for tolerating homosexuality. Atlanta is home to a large population of homosexuals and of people who are accepting of the gays and their perversion. If God were to smite the city, perhaps destroying it’s water supply would be his choice, just as the Iraq war is a punishment on America as a whole for condoning these sinners.

Alexis, if AIDS is God’s punishment to homosexual men, doesn’t that make lesbians the chosen people? And, on the issue of drought, since that is the topic last I checked, I think my fellow bloggers and myself could spare a few extra gallons for you to use to soak your fat, stupid head!!

Alexis The Hun? Of all the nerve. How could anyone say such a thing? I am a very compassionate person, I am kind, loving and a good mother. My dislike of homosexuality is a testament to my faith in The Lord and is nothing of which to be ashamed.

In Re: Question for Alexis AIDS is not God’s punishment for homosexual men. AIDS is God’s punishment for all who have sex outside of the Holy Sacrament that is Marriage. So no, that does not make lesbians God’s chosen. Lesbian’s are no more human than their male counterparts in that vile lifestyle choice, and will see the fires of Hell burn around them all the same.

gay people rarely affect my life, I have no quarrel with them. what scares the hell out of me is those self-righteous, close-minded control freak so-called Christians. when you have freedom of religion why do you need anything else? to today’s religious fanatics, freedom of religion means: “well, I’m all for freedom of religion, as long as everybody worships the right way, you know, the same as I do”. Jesus was the original long haired hippie freak liberal.

Not doing anything different this November than I did last November. But what does Gay have to do with the drought—real or otherwise.

Do gays bathe more or drink more than the rest of us?

We put buckets in the stand up shower with us and the shower in the boys bathroom we have them plug up the tub. All of this water is used to water what bushs we have decided we will try to save. We can’t save them all. Grey water is also used to water houseplants. Also low flow shower heads have been installed. We replaced one toilet with a low volume toilet. The other one has a brick in the tank. Also we don’t flush every time we pee! We only wash full loads in the washer or the dishwasher. Navy showers are mandatory. Water on, get wet, water off, soap up, water on, rinse off, water off and showers over. No baths. I am no longer using my mop and bucket at all, I am only using the wetjet. I just have to mop more often. In the mornings I wash my face with cold water instead of running it until it warms up. Wakes me up! The trucks haven’t been washed in months. We no longer prerinse dishs before we put them in the dishwasher. We don’t run the water while we brush our teeth. We no longer wash cloths on the cycle with the extra rinse on it. All of my grass is brown, several of my prize roses, gardenias, lilacs, camillas and my japenese magnolias are dead or dying. Because in spite of Alexis and her friends declaring there is no drought that it is only the government trying to scare us. There has been little or no rain falling at my house this year.

Alexis-Get a life!!! Do you have anything going on i.e. a job, kids, church, or friends???You really need professional help. I remember from a previous post, that you mentioned that you have a MBA from UNC. Is that being put to use? All you do is post on blogs all day long. If you don’t have a job, you need to go get one, before we hear about you on the evening news.

Conserve? Why should we conserve as long as the diry politicans continue to take money under the table from developers that continue to throw up mega-housing projects that demand more water?

We should conserve so that politicans can continue to grease their palms? Heck no!

Stop the development first, and then let’s talk water conservation.

    Alexis,

Since you are such a self-righteous and supposed “God fearing” person, tell me this…

  • Do you wear a hat every time you enter Church? If you do not then you are no better than the ‘gays’ that you claim God hates.

  • Have you ever let a man touch you at all during your period? Again, if you have allowed a man to even touch you, just a touch, you are no better than the ‘gays’ that you claim God hates.

  • I could go on, but I think I’ll stop there. You see, my dumb Alexis, the passages that you want to quote are

  • from the old testament. The old testament was from an entirely different age and time where even eating hoven meat was wrong (but I guess you don’t eat pork?).

  • translated so many times, the meanings of many of the words are lost. If you want to claim to know the real word of God, stop listening to idiot false prophets (your preacher for example) and go back to the original text of the Bible (and I don’t mean the King James version). Did you even know that King James had a boy lover? It was his guilt over having a boy lover that caused King James to put the “bad gays” text in his version of the Bible. It was not in the original text.

No, I do not have a job. My husband’s income is more than enough to support our family. Yes, I do have children. Two of them. Their nanny cares for them. As for friends, yes I have them. Typically I spend my afternoons playing tennis with friends or having cocktails at the club. Do I use my MBA? No. During the pursuit of my MBA I managed to get an even more valuable degree, an Mrs. — which pays for more than my MBA ever could — so why work?

If the water shortage is going to an ongoing problem, for whatever reason, and the region still wishes to have growth and quality of life then, obviously, water will have to come from somewhere. As the two lakes above Atlanta serve both the Atlanta region and Alabama and Florida then some way must be found to insure that these reservoirs are kept a levels that can accommodate these needs. My suggestion has been that we take a page out of Saudi Arabia’s play book and build desalination plants on the coast and pipe the clear water to the major reservoirs in the state. This would eliminate the water shortages as most areas get their water from at least one of them. Although the initial cost would be high, once the project is completed maintaining it should be cost effective; and we would reap the benefit of reclaiming all of the minerals from the sea water.

Regarding private ownership of water, the city of atlanta tried that in the late 90’s…sold the water management to a private company…it was such a disaster that they were able to cancel the contract within a few years for breach of contract.

Regarding conspiracy, just wait till your faucets run dry and the city goes into major crisis mode.

Alexis - you just shot the womans movement back years by saying an “MRS” is more important than getting your MBA. If you don’t work…why have a nanny. Raise your own d*mn kids.

Education is important and more important than marrying a man just for his money. Yes, that’s exactly what I think of you. To have so much time on your hands NOT raising your own kids, and spending your husbands money still you have the gull to speak your “christain” beliefs about homesexuality. So suck down your cocktails, having your kids raised by others and one day, karma will come after you and you will hear the words from your kids…”Mom, I’m gay”. Yeah Karma!!
