Tell us about your favorite teacher?

In Gwinnett, six teachers are in the running to become the county’s Teacher of the Year. You can read about them here.

But we want to know about your own “teacher of the year.” That one educator who made you love math or turned you on to a good book.

Tell us, who was your favorite teacher?

What a nice topic! My favorite teacher is Dess Oliver (Industrial Arts). I think he is still teaching. He was my inspiration to major in IA at Georgia Southern and I still use the skills he taught me in my own home shop. Thanks, Mr. Oliver! You ROCK!

Tommy Harris. The man was the principal of the Alternative School that I wound up at, and he gave me my life back after hitting what for me was rock bottom. I am the man I am today because of his influence during the remaining years of my schooling (btoh HS and college).

My personal favorite as a child was Ms. Brubaker at B. C. Haynie Elemetery in Morrow, Georgia. She ws my Science Teacher in the 4th grade. She was bright, energetic and made you ‘think’ to ask questions. I’ll never forget the time I asked “So how ‘big’ is a molecule?”…. I got an A for the day. (funny what you remember).

Mrs. Hatcher taught 11th grade American History and Mrs. Berry, American Literature, at Salem High School, Salem, VA. Both were not only excellent teachers, but amazing women who loved what they did and it transferred to any student in their classes. But I would be remiss to leave out Dennis Reaser, band director. All of these fine teachers impacted my life in one way or another.

One of my favorite teachers, one I will NEVER forget was Juanita Brown at Canby Lane Elementary School in Decatur. She was my 5th grade teacher(about 1983)and she was known as being “mean!” Back then we had Spelling Class and I will never forget she taught us the words “library” and “police.” She emphasized looking above her glasses, that the pronunciation was not “li-berry” or “po-lease”, she stood at the head of the class and beat the blackboard warning how ignorant we’d sound if we mispronounced those two words. I loved her and looking back almost 25 years-I have never forgotten that Spelling Class!

My favorite teacher was Lettie Jo Love at McNair High School She was my English/Literature teacher in the 10th and 11th grades. I liked her because she was a no non-sense kind of teacher and was great at what she did best, teaching. I remember not being a good test taker and being very anxious about the upcoming GA Graduation Exam. She worked very hard to prepare the class for it. The day of the exam I went into it feeling as if I had already aced it. (Which I did by-the-way) But I know that if I didn’t have the support of a wonderful teacher, things would have been much different. I can just go on and on about Ms. Love. I just think it is a shame that educators are not given the credit they deserve. If more money were put into all schools, less would have to be put into prisons.

My favorite was my 11th grade Trig teacher. She was the first and only female math teacher I ever had. Inspired me to major in math myself.

My favorite teacher is Jon Gloer… He was my history teacher at FCHS…. I’m reminded daily of things that I learned in his classroom. His approach to teaching cultivated a love of American History that I still carry with me today…almost 10 years later!!

My favorite teacher was Odali Morales at Clarkston High school. She taught me Spanish and was from Cuba. She instilled in me a lifelong interest in other cultures. I now teach English to international students. Mrs. Morales was interesting, vivacious, and always “on” - I had never met anyone like her. She taught us a song “El Manicera”, sung by the peanut vendors on the streets in Cuba. I will never forget her.

My favorite teacher was my high school biology teacher, Ms. Beth Cacchioli from Duluth High School. The energy and enthusiasm she brought to the classroom inspired me to become a teacher myself. I owe her everything as I can’t imagine doing anything other than teaching.

Ellis Loyd…he taught AP English at Shamrock, and was the rare kind of teacher that really got you to think. His passion for literature led me to read more, I have continued to do so ever since. I count it as my good fortune to have been his student.

I can’t really single out a ‘favorite’, as I was fortunate enough during my school years to have several excellent teachers. However, one suggestion—if a teacher that has had a great deal of influence on your life is still living, take the opportunity to let them know while you still have the chance. A few minutes spent writing a quick note of appreciation may have more impact than you ever know.

I grew up in CT and my favorite teacher was Mrs. Virginia Peck. I had her for both second grade and then 6th grade Social Studies and Language Arts. She was tough but she was awesome! She used to tell us how someday we’d thank her for being so tough and she was right… I did! I was in High School and stopped by to see her and told her. A few years ago I looked her up and left a message for her on her answer machine. She said to her husband when she heard my voice “Oh my gosh! That’s Liz Kane!” I couldn’t believe she remembered me! She called me right away and it was so nice to talk to her.

Now, here in Gwinnett County the favorite teacher my daughter has had is Mrs. Debbie Huff. She teaches kindergarten at Jackson Elementary School. My daughter stops by to see her whenever she possibly can. When Mrs. Huff’s daughter-in-law was killed last year, my husband and I went to the funeral because we just love Mrs. Huff so much and wanted to let her know! She’s an awesome lady who loves her kids!

My favorite teacher was Ms. Kristin Rugg. I was in her 1979 English class at Milford High School in Delaware. She not only nurtured my love for reading and poetry, she was the only teacher who ever showed me that she truly cared about my future and well-being. She was quite eccentric, but I understood her and she understood me. I’ll always cherish my memories of Ms. Rugg…she was the BEST!

You know, this is quite ironic to say the least. My favorite teacher is from elementary school. And, well, to my surprise, she is one of the six finalists for Gwinnett County’s teacher of the year. She was my fourth grade teacher Mrs. Conway At the time she was teaching at Mountain Park Elemtary. Now, she is Ms. Ethridge of Margaret Winn Holt Elementary. Congratulations Ms. Ethridge, you were always my favorite. You hold a special place in my heart. Love You!

My favorite teacher was actually an administrator. Dr. James Pierce was the principal at Rockbridge Elementary back in the late ‘70’s & early ‘80’s. There was not one ounce of ambiguity about that man. You always knew where you stood with him. He had a booming forceful voice which could silence a rowdy lunchroom full of kids in 5 seconds. His mere presence commanded respect. He would not last one week in today’s school system. They’d fire him for being “insensitive”.

My favorite teacher would have to be Mr. George Jacobus of Stone Mountain High School. He survived D-Day and would regale us with his stories of fighting “those G&D D*mn Nazi B&st&rds” in World War II. Sadly, he too would be fired today for not being a mamby pamby Momma’s boy type.
