What does your church do?

Churches have started ministries that are intended to provide a safe haven for church members and non-members who might feel lost or even ashamed of their circumstances.

Tell us about your church in Gwinnett. What social issue is it involved in?

My church is starting a ministry of celebrate recovery beginning Monday night. It is a Christ based recovery for habits and hang ups. It is open to everyone and is my churches first attempt at this. We are also involved in mission trips and assisting food co ops in the Gwinnett area. The church also visits apartment complexes that are culturally diverse in an attempt to spread the word. It’s a great church…Grace Fellowship on Dogwood in Snellville.

My church is Israel Missionary Baptist Church under the leadershio of Rev. William Smith, Hosea Williams in Kirkwood. My church is awesome because my pastor truly believes in giving back and helping people with drug problems, alcoholism or whatever. He is very non judgemental and teaches us to be the same way. We have a homeless man who attends the church ocassinally and regardless of his appearance my pastor always acknowledges him, hugs him and prays with and for him. We have a homeless alcoholic female who constantly comes into the church and often is disruptive and he never ceases to pray for her.

My pastor goes out into the community and ministers to drug addicts and dealers. He helps those in the church with children in college who cannot afford their kids tuition. Though giving back is not always monetary MY PASTOR TRULY GIVES BACK IN HIS TIME, ENERGRY, LOVE, EFFORTS AND CONCERN FOR OTHERS EVEN IF IT’S A MONETARY NEED HERE OR THERE. I love him because he exemplifies what a pastor and church should truly be about - drawing those to Christ and not storing up a storehouse of riches that has nothing to do with ones salvation.

Prosperity is not always mean being wealthy or living in big houses and driving fancy cars. Maybe your child is on the right path and doing well - how much more prosperous is that!!

Pilgrimage Presbyterian is a church that helps the community. We provide school supplies to the elementary school around the corner, for those kids who might have them, we supply the Lilburn Coop with food each month, we supply food for the Gwinnett Childrens Shelter, and serve the homeless of Atlanta. We hold There are many other ministries that we indeed participate in, this is the tip of the ice burg! We are located in LIlburn, but minister to many inside and outside of this city.

My pastor preaches bigotry, racism, homophobia, that it’s OK to kill innocent Iraqi’s (hell….their just collateral damage)but not an unborn mass of cells…he likes to hunt and kill defenseless animals for sport…and he likes to have all the children come and stay at his house for sleep-overs. Oh…yours does all that stuff too?

My church begs for money. Every Sunday they talk about how poor they are and how we need to provide for the needy. I agree, but enough is enough. Pastor Paul, talk about the ministry…!

Social issues the church is involved in? Why not ask what church issues the society is involved in….Jesus will come back for a perfect church according to the Bible….if that is the case, we’ve probaly got a long wait to see Jesus. Demand the church perfect itself and stop it with the crap or simply stop going.

Begs for Money? The pastor that lives in my subdivision has a brand new Lexus SUV and his wife just got a brand new 2007 Tahoo last month. They live in a $600,000 house….and most of his congregation probably makes a household income of about $40,000 per year. Why in the world should he command a salary that is so much higher then those he rips off…er…i mean preaches to? All pastors should work and live at the 20% MORE THEN THE NATIONAL POVERTY LEVEL. They should donate any excess money they have at the end of each and every year. Church is a business folks….best business in the world to be in. You don’t pay taxes….and you don’t even have to sell anything….just read parts of a fable/story book written a few thousand years ago….and tell people it’s true…start them really really young to make sure you can brain waish them properly (can’t have them doubting that the world is 6000 years old though all science proves that to be a lie)….and then you’ve got a little army to continue paying into the lies you spew every week….man…i KNOW i should have been a friggin’ preacher…I could have saved my parents SO much money on college!

Daylight Come Do you really believe that a person who has been dead for 2,000 years is coming back to life looking for the perfect church? There is no such thing. A dead person coming back to life, or a perfect church.

Those people complaining about their church aren’t really going to church. DA. Churches, although not perfect, are SUPER.

Churches don’t hate anyone, they just recognize “sinful” behavior. Those who are doing the sinful behavior rebel against churches. Like a little kid, who you tell not to hit another kid and he does it anyway.

I agree with Anon, that there are no perfect churches(just like there are no perfect person). As far as a person coming back to life, no person could come back to life. However, the son of God(Jesus) did and this was witnessed by over 500 people at that time.

Randy, you are very naive to think that churches don’t hate anyone. If that were truly the case, then how can you account for those of you “faithful” demonizing anyone who disagrees with your way of thinking? I can’t tell you how many preachers I’ve heard talk about the need the hate the homosexual as a person. How else can you account for the new head of the Baptist national church saying that he agrees that homosexuality is probably biological, but that it is still a sin that must be conquered by the evil person……..

Who about those that run churches that sin? How about those that preach one thing themselves yet follow a different path? naybe you can explain someone like Ted Haggard to me? or Jim Baker? or ….and the countless pastors, priests, and preachers who have been convicted of molesting children? And WHO is it that preaches hate? The church. Best example…anyone who does not believe what they (you) believe will die/burn/whatever….church is for weak people who basically are afraid of death and the unknown. Since you don’t know what happens when you die…you need to feel that you keep on living…yet…as an added bonus…get this…it’s a BETTER place then this world we live on. But you have to “believe” to get into this secret club. Why not just live as a good person in THIS world and forget about the make believe one? The world would be a much better place. Stop hating those that don’t believe what you do. What makes you right and them wrong? It’s fear…and hate…your hatrid of those not like you. I also love how there are things in the bible that some follow…while most of it is not followed. For instance….you all preach that a man being with another man is a sin. But what about the part where it tells you to stone your children if they are acting up? Here..maybe some of you “believers” can explain these FACTS/RULES/LAWS of the bible: http://ffrf.org/timely/abcsbible.php

Remember…the bible was written a long time ago when humans did not even understand why it rained…and thought the earth was flat….and thought that an invasion of locusts was a plague…etc…Time to start living in this millinium…and leave that horrible one behind. It is then..and ONLY then (when people stop believeing in a boogy man called god)…that this world will live in PEACE. ;-)

My church does missionary work for impoverished people in other countries:

We teach them that they are naked and must be clothed, lest they be heathens. But since they have no economy, but rather simply live off the land, they must now strip the rainforest so that they can grow crops that the land can only support for one or two seasons. With the meager funds they earn from the crops they can then purchase the clothes to hide their sinful bodies.

We also bring them pre-packaged foods from the U.S. so that they can see that they can become dissatisfied with living simply off the Earth. Now, they can also use their meager funds from their crops to purchase potato chips and Twinkies which have no nutritional value, but at least they aren’t eating like heathens.

We teach them that they MUST worship our God or they will be condemned for all eternity. We teach them that Muslims who teach the same thing are evil and should be destroyed, but that we are a good and kind and loving faith……

More wars have been fought in the name of religion than for any other cause.

So one of two things is operating here:

“And Jesus wept…”

or

“And God laughed.”

Joe So your church forces their beliefs down other throats?

What’s wrong with being naked? Absolutely nothing. I am not a heathen when taking a shower am I? Or do you bathe fully clothed. Who’s place is it to tell them they are heathens?

This is why I don’t believe in God or organized religion.

You people/sheep who fall for this crap scare me.

I totally agree with Dave 2:52 post.

Anon, if you’re going to talk about church, then you have to put yourself in the mind frame of the churchsters…..They do believe as the Bible teaches that Jesus will return to earth for the saved ones….this is a faith based principle and thusly requires faith. It is all very metaphysical to some and literal to others, but we’re talking about the church’s beliefs and the church’s practices, remember?

First of all, we’re not talking about the church’s beliefs and paractices…I suppose we are, but thats not what the thread is about. So, back to the subject that was- the church in my area is hosting a festival type event as an alternative to walking around subdivisions at night. The end, with no schewed opinions about God, faith church or denominations…I really wish people would stay on subject here!!!

You don’t need a church to show everyone you believe in God! I treat people well, help those that are hungry, and try to be the best I can. I don’t need a church to tell me what to do, take my money and either spend it on themselves or someone outside of my country. I grew up Catholic and wouldn’t raise my son in that church because of all the wrong it does. And look at the way the Pope lives. How much does he sacrifice?
