Will taking on Taylor make Brockway front-runner for GOP job?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Some GOP party activists are buzzing about Buzz Brockway.
Last week, the State Ethics Commissions launched an investigation of former Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor after reviewing a complaint filed by Brockway.
Brockway, the erstwhile chairman of the Gwinnett GOP, is running for first vice-chairman of the Georgia Republican Party.
The election is scheduled to take place during the state party convention next month. Brockway will be on home turf for the vote. The Gwinnett Civic Center is hosting the May 18-19 event.
On Thursday, the ethics commission voted to hold a full hearing on Brockway’s allegations about Taylor. Taylor, a Democrat, lost the 2006 governor’s race to incumbent Republican Sonny Perdue.
Brockway alleges Taylor didn’t completely identify some of his contributors, and also accepted an illegal contribution.
The commission found probable cause to hold a full-scale hearing on 10 counts, most of them alleging that Taylor didn’t adequately identify contributions from political action committees.
The commission also agreed to consider whether Taylor’s campaign illegally took $9,000 from a Valdosta development company for the 2006 gubernatorial primary.
The legal limit is $5,000 from one company or affiliated companies for the primary, and $5,000 for the general election.

Imagine demanding an investigation of the other party just before an election for a position you happen to be running for. He should go far in politics with such creative tactices and proving he has no new ideas, fits well in todays climate.

Bruce - the complaint was filed by Mr. Brockway back in 2005 - not exactly right before the GA GOP election next month. Perhaps he was doing what was right - and the State Ethics committee seems to agree.

“On Thursday, the ethics commission voted to hold a full hearing on Brockway’s allegations about Taylor.”, either the ethics commission moves very slowly or you have mistaken the 2005 date.
What is even more amazing is that the complaints filed in 2005 are about donations in 2006.

Bruce - please do a little research before commenting. The charge by Mr. Brockway was filed in 2005 regarding contributions made to Lt. Gov. Taylor’s primary campaign. I’m sure Mr. Taylor was collecting money in 2005 for his 2006 campaign for Governor.
To save you a little time, here’s the full AJC article about the ethics charges:

“an election-year shotgun effort to audit seven years of financial disclosure reports for partisan reasons.” Now do you want people to believe that the ethics commission is that incompetent that it is just now investigating a complaint from 2005?
And you want people to believe that the timing of the investigation has nothing to do with the upcoming election?
I like how you failed to mention the forty other complaints against Taylor were dismissed, but again you would like us to believe this is the one that will nail him.
By any chance are you a fiction or childrens book writer Frank?

I wonder why it is that, on every AJC blog, no matter the subject, the ubiquitous Bill Wilcox aka The Atlanta Oracle sallies forth with opinion, expertise, and an abundance of hot air. I wonder who he is and how he came to collect such a vast knowledge base on all manner of varied subjects. I wonder what we, lowly ajc.com readers, have done to earn the ever-present authoritive opinion of this wise and worldly man. Is there no subject about which he has NO opinion? I wonder.
Simply said, Mr. Wilcox, readers might value your opinion more if you gave less of it.

Wondering, what a strange observation you render, you follow all the AJC blogs yet never have an opinion? Maybe it is a Southern thing to keep quiet except to harrass someone. I would find it rather boring to have an very limited range of subjects to have an opinion on, but to each his own.

Bruce -
Nice try attempting to cover up for your ill-informed original post.
I never commented on the validity of the charges filled against Mark Taylor. Most were dismissed - good for him. I really don’t care if they are bogus or legit - that’s not why I replied to your original post.
I simply pointed out to you the FACTS about Buzz Brockway’s charge.
In your original post, you said he did it to drum up support for his run for a leadership post in next month’s GA GOP election. I simply pointed out the TRUTH that, according to the AJC, he filled the charges in 2005. Maybe Mr. Brockway had the foresight two years ago to think that the ethics committee would rule on his complaint 6 weeks before the GA GOP elections in 2007, but I doubt it.
Here’s a tip - unless you plan on retracting you original inane post, don’t reply anymore - you’re only making yourself look more foolish.

Frank again are you saying it is just coincidence and not political? The same commission cleared Sonny on the land sell and tax scams, the same commission cleared the speaker on charges he messed around, let me remind you both are Republicans and both were handled in a matter of weeks. But now a charge against a Democrat from 2005 just before an election that the one who filed the complaint is in suddently and magically appears at the top of the pile.
And Frank the dates may be wrong but you want people to believe the timing of the investigation has nothing to do with the upcoming election, you are kidding.

The State Ethics Committee never cleared the Speaker of anything. A joint Legislative Ethics Committee dismissed the charges brought against him. The fact that you don’t know the difference tells me you don’t know much about what you pretend to talk about.
If you believe that the State Ethics Committee is somehow slanted towards Republicans and is willing to make deals with Republican activists to hold their hearings until weeks before a party election, how do you explain the 40+ complaints brought against Mark Taylor that were dismissed?
Maybe Buzz Brockway made a secret deal with the Committee to hold the hearing until weeks before the GA GOP convention to put himself in position to win an election that NOBODY is paying attention to (not even the GA GOP faithful have tuned in yet) but I doubt it. In fact, I’m sure it didn’t happen.
This conspiracy only lives in your feeble mind.

Frank my name is not Ben Smith, I did not raise the issue only responded to it. Sonny gets to appoint three out of five members who just happened to clear him. Did you ever think that the charges against Taylor were nothing to begin with and that is why they were dismissed? And Frank you seem to be paying a great deal of attention to the issue and are quite upset about it.

I know Buzz Brockway personally. I have worked with him in several campaigns and had numerous discussions with him as well.
Buzz is the real deal. I could hand him my wallet, pick it up the next day and wouldn’t count the money. Buzz and integrity are interchangable words.
Buzz exercised his rights as a citizen and did the homework to find the evidence that clearly shows ex-lt. gov taylor violated ethics laws. Don’t blame Buzz for finding it…blame Taylor for doing it.
The only thing wrong with Buzz is there needs to be more just like him.

Technology is not the job of the 1st Vice Chair so maybe the party should hire a better IT gal/guy. When he was chair of his county party all I remember is what a Yes Man he was. He showed little to no leadership skills that I saw. Gwinnett Republican Party was at its best under Sunny Warren. It is getting old to hear people talk about the grass roots. All I know is democrats keep getting elected in Gwinnett. If Gwinnett is so Republican when did a Dem get defeated once elected? People like Buzz are why I am no longer involved in the Party. It seemed to be such a boys club once he stumbled into the Chair position.

I imagine Bruce will be upset with me again next month because the Ethics Commission will finally hear my 2005 complaint against Cathy Cox. :-)

And Buzz if the charges are dismissed will you come back here and apologize?
What you were running for in 2005 Buzz? Is using the shotgun approach of charging everyone in sight hoping something will stick is an intelligent use of the system?
Buzz you are the poster child of why people are getting sick of politics and politicans. Sorry Buzz I can not add a little smile to my closing, but it does if you.

Oh and Buzz do these include the 1998 compliants against Taylor by Sonny’s lawyer and you?
