Bannister: Will he or won’t he? Apparently he will.

Rather elliptical utterances by Charles Bannister about his future political plans have left us feeling a bit mystified lately.

The mystery is now over. We think.

Supporters of the Gwinnett commission chairman have scheduled a fund-raiser for his 2008 re-election campaign. The after-work social with potential contributors is scheduled to take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Atlanta Marriott-Gwinnett Place hotel on March 20.

During an interview last week, Bannister told us he was running again, then said he wasn’t “in campaign mode” and then said he would announce his plans to seek re-election later this year. That is, he said, unless he decides not to run again.

We asked Bannister if, perhaps, he would best described as an “unannounced candidate” for re-election. He agreed with that.

But he did not agree with our description of the Marriott event as the first fund-raiser of the 2008 Gwinnett campaign. Bannister said he’d already held the first fund-raiser — back in 2005, his first year in office.

For the March event, Bannister said, “we’re raising money to cover future campaign expenses.”

Okay, we’ll take that as a “Yes, I’m running again.”

In a race between Chuck and a mossy rock, I’d go with the granite.

Wow - from the response, you can practically feel the indifference.

Perhaps it’s indifference to the tabloid gossip feel that permeates this column. Of course, the ajc has now stooped to running a ‘touring profile’ of a w*******’s mansion, so that tells a lot about the current state of the ajc. Back to the instant matter. Bannister is infinitely preferable to the other candidate: Neaton-Green. Why the county-wide populace of Gwinnett would consider electing this rude RINO is beyond the pale.

If you prefer a useless protege of the alleged criminal Bill McKinney over an incumbent commissioner who has done wonders for her district, more fantasy whatever to ya. Nice political mudslinging try, but I do not think there’s a Commission VP slot available for Ms. Neaton.

Separated at birth (but not by their long business association): Commission Chairman Charles Bannister and awaiting trial for illegal campaign activities Bill McKinney.

So much for decisive, bold, clear leadership. Just tell it like it is; yes, no, maybe instead of all the aforementioned in the same response - Bannister ain’t that much in demand to be vague and coy. Considerng the potential candidates just doesn’t stoke the pangs of excitement and won’t get my vote. I miss all the angst and “Boot Hill’ crowd, bring back Wayne Hill. I haven’t seen any “smart growth, slow grow” since he left office.

Indeed, the BOC has gotten considerably smarter - the departures of good ol’ “never met a developer he didn’t like” Wayne and John Duh-uhhn raised the quality level by an order of magnitude. They’ve in fact done some pretty shrewd homeowner-friendly things lately, which has really irked the likes of Baron Thorndyke - they MUST be doing something very right.

The Bannister crowd will now start calling people names because they can’t run on anything they’ve actually done. And since they can’t buy the AJC like the have with the Gwinnett Daily Post they’ll call the paper names as well.

When an incumbent who isn’t even running for reelection yet (or is he?) has to go negative a year before qualifying things look pretty bad for the Chairman. It also shows how scared of Green he really is.

Green is going to get a huge painful lesson on how little the entire county thinks of her rude sarcastic demeanor. Also, sk her if she voted for Ronald Reagen in 1980. She is not now nor has she ever been a true Republican.

A little criticism of Green and her drum-beating pimps crawl out of the woodwork. She needs to get used to having that sneer wiped off her prune face. A Prada bag and a Lexus convertible don’t equal class or qualification. She needs to retire to private life and live off her meal-ticket.
