Unfortunately, a display of patriotism can make you a target
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
As with every military wife, I have the mandatory “Support the Troops” magnet on my car.
Of course, I always make note of other cars with them. I wonder what loved one they have overseas and feel a kinship with them.
Unfortunately though, those little magnets can instigate an unforeseen rage in others that is startling.
I recently learned of an incident where one of our soldier’s girlfriends was stopped and a stranger banged on her car window. He proceeded to yell at her while calling her soldier a “baby killer” in a tirade that made her fear for her safety.
While we support our soldiers, we always have to be wary of those who don’t agree with the war and those who prey on the fact that we’re home alone.
I’m not saying you can’t have a car magnet, but I do suggest being careful of having too many of them especially the ones that say “Half My Heart is in Iraq”.
It’s unfortunate that we have to use such caution when we are so proud of our soldiers, but those magnets regrettably advertise that you’re home alone.
Do you frequently tell people your spouse is deployed? Do you worry about your safety if others know he’s gone?

I am not a military wife, but both my dad and my brother served, and I grew up “in the military” so I know how my mom, sister-in-law, and all the other wives feel during deployments. My sister-in-law was attacked by her neighbor while my brother was in Afghanistan, so I know first hand that it does happen. I think it must be even harder for Reserve and Guard wives, who are not surrounded by the military presence. I think it’s important for military wives, and families, to use each other for support, especially if they are alone during a deployment. Maybe the wives in the Atlanta area should form a group to help them with things like moral support, support with things you’d normally have your husband to help with, and most of all, safety and security while at home. Please do not stop telling people that your husbands are deployed. It’s important that people are reminded that their neighbors are still over there fighting for their freedoms. But do take care of each other and stay safe. He needs you to be there when he finally gets home!

I served 4yrs in the U.S. Marine Corps and 2yrs in the U.S. Army. I was in the military during the very first Desert Storm. Hearing stories like this makes me mad, sad and disappointed. Every American should support the troops. They dont have to support the war but they should support the men and women of the armed forces. The men and women bravely, loving, voluntarily fight for the everyday freedoms, liberties and safety of the red, white and blue of this great nation. I pray for the people that are ignorant and self rightous, that disgrace the U.S.A. with unjustified tirads. The men and women of the armed forces sacrifice so much and their loved ones do as well. It is extremely hard to leave your wife and kids not knowing if you will ever return to see them again. It is extremely hard to leave your kids knowing that you may never get to take them to cheerleading practice or football practice or come home at the end of the day and have them tell you that they love you because you may die in combat and never get that opportunity again. I think that we should put on tv every military funeral, every serious combat injury, interviews of the wife’s, children and family so we can be reminded everyday of the hell our men and women in uniform go through and how lucky every american is that we have these brave men and women of the armed forces willing to sacrifice and possibly die for this country. I pray and cry for my fellow commrades and their families everyday. I pray and cry for the children that will now grow up without a father or mother due to his or her selfless duty to america.
To those ignorant, self rightous people who perform tirads and disrespect the awesome men and women in the armed forces, be careful who you do that to, self defense is a win able argument in court.

I tell no one that my husband is deployed. I also don’t have car magnets. I have a beautiful yellow bow that my Mom made me that is in my kitchen. It’s so sad that I feel I can’t show my support of my husband but I worry that folks will know I am home alone with children. Scary, but I’m just trying to keep us safe.

I am a member of Co. H currently here in Iraq. Reading this story really infuriates me. My wife took down her service flag we had flying from our house because I was afraid someone would bring harm to my family. When my father returned from Vietnam, he was called a baby killer and actually spit on. I can assure you if one of those cowards spits on me when I get home, the next thing they will remember is the ambulance ride to the hospital. Everyone has thier personal views of the war. That does not give them the right to threaten or assault a soldier or their family. Any cowards reading this may want to think twice about approaching a car with a Ranger sticker on it and calling the soldier a baby killer. For those of you that support the troops, we thank you.

As an expatriate Brit, from a military family, and who remembers when most of us did our National Service, this kind of thing makes my blood boil. This scum, although that may be an insult to the word scum, who attack lady relatives of military personnel, are no better than rapists nor terrorists. They are the dregs of society, and an insult to those who have given their lives so that they may be free. I have two magnets on the back of my truck. One says “Support out troops”, and the other says “Freedom isn’t free”. If you want to vent your rage on me, I’ll be waiting for you.

While someone with a conscience bangs on your car window, your husband is out murdering innocent men, women, and children for Bush’s empire. Wake up and smell the coffee - the Nazi era war criminals got theirs at Nuremburg, the Bush era war criminals will get theirs soon enough.

To the moron who thinks they are putting things into perspective, you are so clueless.Have you spent one minute in war, or have anyone over there now ? Did’nt think so.Sounds to me like you would be one who would get to know Smith and Wesson.Innocent ? We have innocent people killed here in th USA in cold blood by their own family members. It’s obvious that you know nothing about anything.I could elaborate so much on those useless words you put into a sentence but, you are not worthy of my time.GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS !!!!!!!CO.H, YOU ARE THE BEST !! My son decorated my van when I picked him up from his boot camp graduation at Parris Island. I have Marine mom and other decals all over my van. I won’t remove them because my son has has been to Iraq (and will be redeployed from Camp Lejeune again this summer) and he has paid the price for MY freedom to say whatever I want on my personal car!!! Why is it that it is always everyone else’s rights that are protected and okay??

I agree with you, I guess we have to fight a war at home while our loved ones are fighting a war away. It’s really sad that it’s like this. When my husband came back from Iraq last yeart, my father had a sticker made for him that said “IRAQ and BACK” “OIF 2005-2006”. We had it on our trucks’ back window. We received alot of horn blowing and thumbs up from people we didnt know.It made me cry sometimes because I knew that people like these were thankful for our troops work and their sacrifices they make for them.Everytime we got a thumbs up and a horn blow, it made me much more proud of my husband.I can honestly say though, I don’t think I can remember ever getting a “finger” or a curse from anyone about the display.God Bless you Co.H, Stay safe you guys, we love you !! I PROUDLY display all my stickers & magnets without hesitations. I am not in the least bit scared of displaying them because my hubby is gone. If someone were to mess with me - I’m not going down without a fight. Either way, I haven’t received any negative vibes/reactions from anyone. It seems like most people who find out my husband is deployed are very supportive & thankful for our troops.

The yellow ribbons are an appeal to sentimentalism, a maudlin joke, especially when you see them on the tail end of some supersized gas guzzling SUV. I’ve seen the ribbons on sale for less than $1, I guess someone can pretend they are supporting the troops by putting one of these on their gas-guzzling behemoth, when every time they fill-up they are sending money to Arabs in the Middle East, TRADING WITH THE ENEMY.
And, why didn’t this women call the cops - everybody has a cell phone nowadays. The action described is assault, a felony - if it did indeed occur.
This is hearsay, at best. Sounds like the stuff of urban legend, nice to some if it were true, but it probably isn’t.

Fiction, what about those super gas guzzling 8 cyl corvette’s, dooly trucks, 250-350 trucks, turbo charged cars, etc? There are plenty more vehicles that use lots of gas besides SUV’s. This subject is so old and it doesn’t even stay on topic with the writers questions.
Besides, I bet YOU haven’t rode your bicycle in years. Maybe you should follow your own advice!

How amusing you call these people “ignorant” when you can’t even spell. I feel nothing for sympathy for the men and women being sent to Iraq but I can’t support something I don’t believe in. The truth is, they joined the service by choice. They weren’t drafted.
How about the pro-war people who attack those of us with anti-war bumper stickers? I suspect there are just as many lunatics on both sides of the fence, so be careful before you start pointing fingers.

I buy my gas at Citgo, mouthy darlin’. The Venezuelans aren’t at war with us - yet.
My gas bill on my compact car averages about $35/month.

Avoid the questions much Fiction?
And I’m not convinced that you only purchase gas from Citgo either.
What type of “compact car” do you drive? How far do you drive to work? All these things add up! I drive 25 miles one way to and from work - obviously some people are going to naturally spend more money on gas!
Again, what does this have to do with the original questions the writer asked?

If you really believe the Arabs are our enemy - WHY ARE YOU SPENDING $$$ WITH THEM???
Make a sacrifice for our soldiers and your conscience, if you believe this war is a good thing - move to within walking distance of your job, or quit it.
Bottom line, American soldiers and innocent Iraqi citizens are dying so that your fat mouth can drive 50-60 miles every day in your SUV because you are too fat to fit in anything else, too stupid to move closer to your job, and too self-absorbed to think of anyone else other than yourself. THEIR blood for YOUR oil. YOUR deal with the devil.
YOU stop begging the question, hypocrite. Put your fat mouth to walking, sister. It’s called making a sacrifice.
Yout silly yellow ribbon on the back of your SUV isn’t support of the troops - it is a mockery, given your self-absorption.

Aww did someone get a little “butthurt”? Baby, tell mommy to get that wet diaper off of you. We all know how it makes you cranky!
I’m glad you ASSume I’m on the fat, hefty side. LOL You’re seriously an idiot. You think you know it all and boy do you look stupid. Lets put a few things in perspective here:
1.) I’m at a healthy range in weight for my height. :) I’m 5’8 and weigh barely 150. Awww, does it disappoint you that I’m not overweight? Sorry.
2.) I can already tell your personal “overweight” demons are eating at you to make yourself feel better.
3.) I really don’t think 20-25 miles away from your job is too far. My salary compensates me for my travels. I’m fine with spending the money I have to spend to get to and from work! You’re the one with the problem dipsh*t! Then again, like we said earlier - you’re probably a self-proclaimed living in mommies basement idiot.
4.) Lastly, I’ll put you too shame. I exercise regulary. You’ll find me frequently biking, skating, playing basketball and running unlike you.
Oh, I’ll let you get back to breastfeeding but honestly you NEVER answer my questions. What did you say you drove that you only need to spend $35month on gas?!

You’re right, you really don’t think. Not your fault, given your family background - probably couldn’t even if you wanted to.
By the way, the Arabs thank you for the $300-350 per month you’re sending their way, lardbutt. That’ll buy a whole lotta IEDs.
Since I work from home I could drive a tank to work and spend less than you, numbnuts.

Fiction is right - this never happened.
It is assault - a felony - to threaten someone like this (fictitious) woman says she was threatened. If someone came up and banged on my car window, there would be a 911 call. If I didn’t shoot them first.

I think the original topic question was how the wives handle putting themselves at risk by flying and wearing the patriotic symbols. On my front porch flies a big American Flag and a Blue Service Star Flag. In the yard I have a wooden Co. H Ranger LRS Unit stuck up for everyone to see. I’ll not ever take it down — even after our guys come home because it shows my support for every man who is fighting for my right to put it there. Anything I do puts me at risk of being approached by people mad at me for not believing their way. THIS IS A COUNTRY OF FREE WILLS AND IT’S THAT WAY BECUASE OF PEOPLE FIGHTING TO KEEP IT THAT WAY. If you don’t like my flag and what my husband is fighting for - stay away from me and go join the Peace Corp. Anyway…I’m not home alone. I have God with me and he’s not fast enough my 9mm is.
