Cagle vows to build coalition with Democrats

Sen. Casey Cagle, who made history last night as the first Republican elected lieutenant governor, made his post-election bow early Wednesday on local television news programs.

Cagle, who outdistanced Democrat Jim Martin, an Atlanta attorney and longtime lawmaker, 54 percent to 42 percent, said on WSB-TV that he came into the race as a “huge underdog” but the party’s message of hope and opportunity clearly appealed to voters.

A relaxed-looking Cagle, 40, said on FoxNews Wednesday that it was a “wonderful feeling” to become Georgia’s first Republican lieutenant governor. His election means the two top offices in the state will be Republican. Gov. Sonny Perdue who easily defeated Mark Taylor for a second term.

“It’s really an opportunity that we don’t want to let get away from us,” Cagle said. “We want to make the most of it. We’re beginning today in the transition period leading Georgia forward in a positive way about jobs, education and public safety.”

The Gainesville Republican, who has spent a dozen years in the state senate, snatched a come-from-behind GOP primary win over Ralph Reed.

Cagle said he would begin working to build a unity coalition on both sides of the aisle.
