4 Gwinnett precincts extend hours because of late opening
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Four Gwinnett County voting precincts will remain open past 7 p.m. because of problems this morning with the machines, said Lynn Ledford, elections director for the county.
The problems were due to “poll worker insecurity with the new equipment,” Ledford wrote in a e-mail.
Poll workers received training on the new equipment, but Ledford said some panicked when the machines didn’t work as they should. Ledford said the elections office sent workers to some locations to fix the machines. At other sites instructions were provided over the phone, she said.
“It is an inconvenience for some voters, and hopefully if they couldn’t wait, they will return this afternoon to vote,” she wrote in an e-mail.
The extra time the precincts will remain open depends on how long the machines were down. Here are the locations that will be open later:
- Precinct 84, Lawrenceville G First Christian Church will be open for voting until 7:03 p.m.
* Precinct 116, Martins I Kanoheda Elementary will be open for voting until 7:10 p.m.
* Precinct 31, Berkshire C Camp Creek Elementary will be open for voting until 7:13 p.m.
* Precinct 003, Dacula Hebron Baptist Church will be open for voting until 7:30 p.m.
Ledford said voting at the district’s other precincts seemed to be going smoothly.
She said turnout has been slow. A few voters were confused over what identification was needed, but Ledford said poll workers explained what was required.
