Cell phones and express lines

Now I’ve seen everything.

I was at the Publix on Peachtree Industrial on Sunday. The registers were busy, but I was fortunate enough to get in line behind one lady who was, like me, purchasing only a few items. Friends and neighbors, beware of the short lines.

As I got in line behind her, I noticed that she was talking on a cell phone. Mistake number one. In situations like this, I usually start scanning the other counters, seeing if I could leave this line and move into another. Seeing nothing else available, and noting that another person had moved into line behind me, I figured that I would just wait it out.

The cashier had finished her scanning, and announced the total to the customer. The customer, engrossed in her conversation, did not acknowledge the cashier’s request. The cashier announced the total again. Still, there was no response from customer.

Eventually, the cashier tapped the customer on the arm and politely indicated that she was ready. The customer held her finger up in the air, as if to say “wait a minute,” took her time, then ended her call, put the cell phone in her purse, and then closed it up.

She then turned her attention to the cashier, who patiently and politely reminded the customer of the total. So, the customer opens the purse that she just closed, fidgets around in her purse for her checkbook, opens the checkbook, fidgets around for a pen, finds it, starts writing, finds the pen out of ink. She starts rummaging around again in her purse for another pen. The cashier says, “Here, I have a pen.” The customer replied, “No, that’s okay, I have a pen here, give me a second.” She eventually did find another pen, wrote her check, filled out the register in her checkbook, got a receipt, but the receipt in her checkbook, closed the checkbook, put the checkbook back in her purse, fidgeted around for her car keys, found her car keys, then closed the purse. She started to walk away, but stopped after three steps, and came back to the counter to get the bags of groceries.

There ought to be a law that says if you are not ready to pay for your bill at the time the cashier is ready, then you should be bumped to the back of the line, and wait your turn until you get back to the cashier. There are other things that it could think of (and actually did). That would make this point more effective, but that’s a start. We could all stand to be a little more courteous and aware of the people around us.

Did you have any customer service tales of woe?

I’ll bet there wasn’t anyone on the other end. People often yap into their phone so people will think they have friends.

I am wondering what did the cell phone have to do with anything? It is apparent phone or not the lady was just a bit on the ditzy side. However, it really isn’t worth getting that upset about. A small wrinkle in the huge fabric of life.

I have my own way of dealing with this and I have had to use it several times and I actually enjoy the looks and results I get. If someone is holding up progress, such as in line because they’re so pitifull co-dependant they can’t go three minutes without a cell phone fix, I tell them, ” Would you get out of line here and stop treating this line like it’s a phone booth.” I’ve had a few harsh words passed back and forth from this but I never back down. Most of the times the person working there is happy that I did it. I don’t think people realize just how stupid and insecure people look when they yak on a cell phone all day long. Long gone are the days where there is even a little bit of prestige of owning a cell phone. These days every third world illegal person in the states has one, get some therapy for you insecuity and co-dependecy and just hang up.

I understand that some people still like to right checks (I’m not one of them), but common courtesy is to start writing out the check while the cashier is ringing up your purchases. That way you only have to write in the total when check-out is complete. Same holds true for those paying with debit/credit cards. Swipe your card, enter your pin and be ready when the cashier has scanned all your items. I think the thing that gets me the most, however, are the folks who dig through their pockets for change. If you want to get rid of your change, go to the bank. Most Publix’s have one in the front of the store, USE IT!

You are far more polite than me. She would have heard about it real quick. The store is responsible too. Publix is a nice place but they should have signs that say no cell phones in line. No “law” is needed. Just a little etiquette. As for the checkbook, that is a whole nother situation.

I agree that cell phone use aids in some of the rudest interactions ever. But what I don’t understand is why people are so unnerved by it, when we have the travesty that is in the White House ruining our nation. I personally think cell phones should be banned in public places. People who talk on them in the grocery store, retaurants, etc. are the most rude and obnoxious people. They seem to think they are the only ones in the store. I can’t tell you how many times I have tried to get around some rude person on their phone standing with a buggy, right smack in the middle of the aisle.

As a matter of fact, I was at Walmart in Suwanee last night, and there was a lady with two kids. She was talking very loud on her cell phone, while her kids were knocking stuff off the shelves, playing with the toys all over the floor, and she just stood there talking on the phone, like her kids were at a playground.

I leave my phone in the car when I shop. If I am on the phone when I arrive at the store, I will not get out of my car until my conversation is finished. I think its very rude.

If I had been behind that lady at Publix, I would have said something to her.

For that very reason, I leave my phone in the car or on vibrate anytime I enter a public place. I’m not multi-tasked enough to talk on the phone & write a check and certainly don’t like my meals interupted with my phone ringing. I just wish more people were like me :)

Like Edward, there are times when you have to put your foot down. Especially with those who cannot comprehend check out lanes with 15 items or less. One or two items over is no big deal but 50, thats another story. Twice in the past I simply told the offender that they had to many items, used the divider and pushed their items back and put my items in front of theirs. They gave me a strange look, but that was all. The cashier smiled all the way. If more individuals stood up for what is right we wouldn’t have these problems.

Personally, I would of shoved that cell phone right up one of her nostrils. It really ticks me off when peopleare so rude and inconsiderate. Yes, they’re are many important things going on in the world to worry about but when it’s 5:30pm and I’ve spent 9 hours working my tail off. I don’t want to wait a minute while you fumble around on the phone and write out checks. I’ve got some place to be. HOME!!! This may be sexist but it’s always women who do this. You never see men exhibiting this kind of behavior in a grocery store. I do cringe when I’m behind another man he pulls out a checkbook. What type of man still carries a checkbook? Cash or debit card. Writing a check in line is so effeminate.

There is small diner by my house and the first thing you see when you enter is a sign thats says No Cell Phones unless you are dialing 9-1-1. Below the sign is a bogus number for the ACLU. I laugh each time I see it, it is a classic! I was behind your typical North Fulton housewife not long ago at a Target store and she was going on and on about the banal details of her life on her cute littl phone. What a snoozer. After a minute of two I jokingly asked her if she’d speed up the conversation and get to the sex part, because unless you’re talking sex, no one wants to hear it. I have never had anyone give me the look that woman gave me, but she never said a word. It was a priceless moment. Try it sometimes.

I always end my call before I get to the register..The few times that I do write a ck. like someone else said, I have everything written out except the total. With my debit card, I have it in my hand when I’m given the total..I have no problem saying something about people using their cell phone at the register..Also, as someone else said, don’t even get me started on people that don’t make thier children mind while in the store..I have twin grandbabies (5yo) & everytime that we see other kids out in public acting up, I tell them, that is not the way you act in public, so far, I have not had any problems with them acting up..

To ONE and all: We are becoming a totally insecure nation incapable of being independent. Too many of us have to be tethered to a cell phone all day/night long, oblivious to those around us. Probably the sames one who are constantly tethered to their government waiting for a hand out. It’s a sign of how vulnerable we have become and terrorists have noticed and will take advantage of it. Considering I’m super impatient…. I always do the ‘huge suffering exhale’ to let them know I’m waiting behind them….THEN…if that doesn’t work….. snorting & foot tapping louding comes next…..then if THAT doesn’t work…. I have gotten to the point where I’m going to EXPLODE…. I will say loudly ‘excuse me…the cashiers waiting!’. And then I smile sweetly.

I don’t believe it is rude to speak on your phone while in a public place. How is that any more rude than talking to another live person while in public? Either way you are having a two party conversation in a public venue and subjecting random people to listen to it. So unless you propose everyone shops in silence then get off of your whiney soapbox regarding cell phones in public. It is silly.

Again, on Sunday it happens. I’m at the “Urban” WalMart off Howell Mill. It’s freakin’ packed in there. It’s like the end of the world packed. I’m trying to negotiate the aisles. I’m trying to exit an aisle when Shaquanda, Cheekita, and two dudes come half’a*******ing into the aisle…in the middle of the aisle. The girl pushing the cart was on her cell talking to Pookey and just stopped in the aisle blocking everyone. She turned to yell at one of the guys and stood there. I said “EXCUSE ME!!!”. She moved her fata$$ and cart half an inch. I squeezed by and just shook my head in disgust. As I passed the rest of her gang, one girl said “un-uh-what’s he shakin’ his head at?”. My wife said “you”. I had to grab her as these girls would have squished her or she would have drowned in grease.
No wonder these people never get anywhere in the world and others must support them. No manners and no worries except for themselves. Wally world doesn’t save me enough money to put up with the ignorance and stupdity of its natives (that’s another rant). Most of the time it’s cell phones that are causing the ignorance.
Just a thought for you guys out there: you’re not a baller, a rapper, a tycoon, an actress, or anything related to powerful or rich. You’re all posers. Get off the phone as we do not want to hear your conversations. If you’re that powerful, have your assistant make the calls or tell Pookey you’ll call him back.

She will eventually suffer because of her lack of personal management skills. But right now she is imposing her personal habits on you, which is unacceptable. We all know the store mgmt can’t do anything or else they will be sued by those irritating folks we all love to hate who know how to dish it out but can’t take it, so it’s up to us to be proactive: Tap her on the shoulder and say, “S’cuse me but you’re holding up the line. Please hang up and get the show on the road so we can do the same.” I’ve also seen shoppers who are able to successfully be on the phone and go through the line at the same time. These folks are focused and in touch with reality. Cell phones are here to stay; some people just need to learn proper etiquette.

Sarah, I find it interesting that you can relate cell phone use to a decline in reading. This is especially humorous considering the newest thing with cell phones is the capability to download a book to your cell phone. Apparently there is a demand for this or it wouldn’t have happened which means cell phone users must read.

Additionally, activities that are associated with decline in reading include portable digital devices (i.e. cell phones, PDAs, etc.) AND TV watching, video games, and Internet Use.

I read as much as possible and I use my cell phone in public. I must be an anomaly. Nope. Just educated and had a parent that valued reading and education.

What an ignorant, self-absorbed selfish waste of DNA. And who still writes checks? That in and of itself is beyond stupid. Unless you are over the age of 90 and you are just too lame to learn new “technology” then there is no excuse for writing checks when ATM and check cards are so readily available. I probably would have started screaming at her when she put up her finger to the cashier. How dare she think her time is so much more important than anyone else’s?

I guess b/c you are annonymous it is ok. When did using a cell phone in public make a person stupid? My millionaire bosses do it. Considering they are millionaires, I am thinking they can’t be too stupid.

Not use checks? Why? That extra minute really matters that much? Why not just insert a chip into your arm. That way you can scan it just like you do your groceries and it will be even faster than ATM b/c you don’t need to sign anything or enter a PIN.

Carts can be used for more than just holding items, a steady nudge on the phoney in front of you will give them a hint. If it doesn’t work, a little harder, but steady nudge, gives them a choice of trying to keep their balance or end the call. A few rules, it is safer to make sure that the person in front of you is smaller, the second nudge should not exceed 15 M.P.H. it borders on simple assult.

I agree with the opinion stated in a previous post: It’s just as unacceptable to be rude on an internet forum as it is to be rude anywhere else. These blogs should be an interesting exchange of ideas and information, and at times they are just that…but one has to sift through A LOT of ignorant posts to find anything useful. But here I go contradicting myself again…if I want useful and interesting information, then why the heck and I sitting here reading a blog about check-out line etiquette?!?

I would say that a quick fix would be to place “No Cell Phone” signs (showing the red circle/slash over a picture of a cellphone) at each checkout line, but those who are self-absorbed will likely ignore them just as much as the do the “15 Items or Less” signs.

However, in actuality cell phones are probably used 2% of the time for true emergencies and the remainder for passing the time while sitting in traffic. The same person holding up the line at the supermarket is the same person doing 50 MPH in the fast lane on I-75 talking on their cell phone. It really goes back to one central issue. How about calling to order a pizza from the fabulous Pizza Hut. After being put on hold for more than 15 minutes, an associate from Pizza Hut asked what I wanted to order. I asked if they had any specials on large pan pizza. The associate explained that yes there was a coupon I could use for $10 off if I purchased 2 pizzas and my total would be $19.95 plus tax. I ordered 2 pizzas after the associate assured me my order was taken. After 20 minutes my order was done - but wait - Pizza Hut was out of large pizzas. OK - so I asked how about medium pizzas. He assured me they had medium pizzas and that they could fill my order - but no coupons could be used - and - my order for 3 medium pizzas would come to $45 - plus the tax. 30 minutes has passed - No thank you!

I don’t think that this is an issue of using a cell phone in public but instead an issue of manners.

Complaints- Too loud, don’t want to hear their conversation—-This could be true of anyone having a conversation, as stated earlier on other posts. In public, everyone should use their “inside voice” not just cell phone users.

Take too long at register—-Again, it is something anyone could do (i.e. check writing mentioned earlier). People should be prepared to make the line go swiftly, again, whether on a phone or not.

Standing in the middle of the aisle and not making room for others to pass—-Seriously, I have seen more people do this without a cell phone than with one. Everyone should be polite enough to move, even if you really, really need to scan every can of paint for the right one, it only takes a moment to step aside.

That being said, it wouldn’t hurt for others to be patient. I admit the holding up the finger in the original post was pretty bad. On the other hand, in a situation like Don’s, it seemed a little obnoxious of the woman to be so “offended”.

You just have to smile and put up a good front. Publix management, and all store management cannot do anything about cell phone use. Remember, The Customer is Always Right. It’s clear from reading these really interesting posts that there are soooo many different kinds of people in the world. It’s our challenge to at least try to be tolerant if we can’t always understand each other. Some people are organized and get the check ready way before going thru the line; others are able to multitask by efficiently talking and paying at the same time. Then there are those who seem to be blissfully ignorant there are others in the world besides themselves. They rush out into the aisle almost running you down with their cart. I guess those are the same ones who cut in front of you in traffic. Who can explain it; after all, God created us all.

Okay, cell phones were invented to be utilized for convenince sake. This way we are no longer tied to the house if we wish to make a call. I find my cell very useful in keeping in touch with my children, parents and friends. I call when I know it is convenient for the person I am calling. As for the person in the store—patience is a virtue. If you have none left on any given day—move to another line. It’s just a phone call and no skin off your nose so to speak. As for who writes checks—I do; I also use the debit/credit cards and occassionally I utilize plain old CASH. How I choose to pay for my purchases should be (and is) my choice. As long as I am paying my bills and structuring my finances—no one can determine how I will choose to pay for something. Some things I track so that I can determine if there is a way to reduce costs; some not so much(these are fairly fixed anyway)— Life is for living. Gripping takes way to much energy out of me and causes no happiness—meaning it is massively nonproductive.

I agree that the cell phones are only a symptom of the rude person’s syndrome. Cell phones are an outlet for these chronic rude people to be rude. The large hoards of people who walk in groups slowly, people who block aisles with carts, people at Kroger demanding to borrow your Kroger plus card when you don’t even know them and being rammed in the heels with a buggy in the check out line are habits from people who need counceling. They have superiority complexes that cause other innocent people to retort. I would say, however, the absolute most offensive thing that happened to me at Publix is their prices. A loaf of bread is more than two bucks, puleeeeeeeeez. I went down just one aisle and the prices made me put my cart back and leave.

This shopper was rude and thoughtless to the cashier and to the other patrons who were waiting in line. We are all human and unfortunately engage in activities that serve us but hinder others. Too often, we consider ourselves to be the only worthy, living being in the world and that everything must orbit around us. With respect to cell phones, why have we evolved into a society where we must be reached by a phone 24/7 and every call must be handled NOW?

People talking on their cell phones while trying to transact business makes me want to barf. They NEVER pay attention. My gooodness if you are conducting business….please do that. Why talk so loud too? If I could only twitch my nose like AUNT CLARA in BEWITCHED I would zap them into next week.

That is the world we have created. One where the important things aren’t important anymore. Everyone use to be keeping up with the Joneses, now we are just trying to keep our heads above water. If you are not willing to go all out, all the time, there is someone who will and can have your job. I know this isn’t true of everyone but it is a part of our culture. I would love to say everyone needs to stop and smell the roses, but I am not that optimistic. This is probably why people get so upset about cell phones, crying children, etc., etc., etc. These things get on others last nerve b/c these individuals are frayed down to the last nerve.

It is interesting how the posts are now turning to compromise. Admitting the behavior is annoying but not quite as bad as it may initially seem. Maybe there is hope for us yet.

Yesterday at Johnny Rocket’s during lunch I witnesses a lady using her cell phone while her three grade school girls were playing with the old-school straw dispensers — touching the tops of batches of straws with their hands. Hello, people use those straws and I’m sure they’d rather they not be contaminated by other’s germs or whatever else. Pay attention to your children people….you had them, teach them proper manners.

Always pick up a box of Trogans , put them in the offenders stuff behind the bar that separates your groceries. Let her explain them when she gets home.If you don’t use them slide them behind the tabloids. BE PREPARED. LOL

To Storm Warning: You are aware of the insecurities and general lack of education found among most liberals. A perfect example is One, utilizing a blog on inappropriate cell phone usage to rant about his useless political affiliations. These are the same brilliant minds that twice elected a perverted, laughing-stock to the highest office in the land. They are the same morons rushing to support the pervert’s “wife”. They forgot about the cell phone issue as soon as they could besmirch our president. What a shame, when our military personnel are so diligently fighting for our continued freedom, behind a president who has this country’s best interest at heart.

Everything that can be said about thoughtless and inappropriate cell phone use has pretty much been covered here (except that I have observed that such behavior is not confined to any gender or socioeconomic group). I do have a question for Bill, though: how is this a “customer service tale of woe”? The woman’s actions had nothing to do with customer service, but rather with her own rudeness and self-absorption.

A few months ago my impatient 4 year old and I were behind a lady in line and she left the counter for a few minutes. Finally I asked the cashier what the hold up was. Evidentially the lady was 25 cents short and decided to go out to the car to dig for change. Anyway, I gave the cashier 25 cents so that I could purchase my things. After I paid, the lady walked back in the store, and mentioned to me that she was trying to avoid getting loose change and had the money on her to pay for the item in the first place. She only purchased 1 item. Why she couldn’t figure out how to pay for it before coming to the register is beyond me. This event aside, one thing I do not get is why the check writers never seem to realize that they will always be asked for ID. It is irritating when I am standing behind one of these people, when it is time to pay they start digging for the check book, then ask for a pen, and at the end the cashier has to ask for an ID, and they dig through their purse or wallet for the ID. How inconsiderate!!!!It would seem that after writing a few checks they would figure out the procedure.

Jan an affair doesn’t cost us the lives of 3,700 of our soldiers. Come to think of it, the laughing-stock you refer too handled a war in the Balkans without losing one soldiers life. But thankfully the conservatives have the family first candidate running, Rudy, but conservatives like Rudy or Newt marry all their affairs.

I still like to write checks. But I always find my ID, pen, checkbook before I even get in line. Comments have been made about how fast I write, too, so I don’t feel a bit guilty. It’s all about consideration.

To 4ever real, you are what is wrong with this self absorbed, selfish, and rude society we have become. Your attitude toward this rudeness tells me that you drive an SUV and run your hi-beam headlights at all times, talk on your cell phone while nearly causing wrecks on every highway, and then have the nerve to complain about others with “road-rage”. Well you are the main cause of it!

Get rid of cell phones in PUBLIC!!!! Its annoying, rude, distracting and down right disrespectfull. I avoid lines when I see someone on a cell phone. There should be a LAW against it. Have you seen our interstates (especially I-285) with people in rush hour on their phones. Accidents/deaths waiting to happen!!!!

I don’t understand why people think that the rest of the civilized world wants to hear about their private/business lives when we are in line at a public business, at a restaurant, or, my personal favorite, in an elevator. People, I don’t care and you aren’t impressing me.

AgentX did you miss the point of the first comment that mentioned politics, it basically raised the same point you did, there are far more important things going on to worry about. Since there are no rules on these blogs I would think politics still falls under Free Speech.

On the political side, I like to adhere to my friend’s (who is getting her Ph.D. in public administration) advice. Your day to day life is affected more by local politics versus what happens in the white house. Pay attention to what your mayors/city planners/commissioners are doing in your community. What are they doing for the schools, pulling in business based tax money, etc. If you got a problem with the white house, take care of that in ‘08. If you got any other problem, write your congressman not a blog.

Wonderful advice, may be hard to explain to our soldiers and their famly’s or the world in general. That Ph.D. will come in handy every four years.

Maybe that is the problem, people are so wrapped up in their small little worlds they cannot grasp the big picture. We get tax breaks while 3,700 of our soldiers and untold thousands of Iraq’s have been killed. We go on vacation, like the Iraqi government, when our soldiers are dying in the streets of Bagdad. We get more upset about cell phone useage and Wal Marts being built than the incompetent way this entire war has been handled.

Oh well, nothing to see here, move along. See you in 08.

I don’t think the soldiers and their families have to be explained anything. They knew exactly what they were doing. As far as I can remember, the soldiers volunteered to do their jobs proudly. They took an oath to defend the constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. No one is forcing them to join the military. If you want to fight for something for the soldiers, fight for higher pay, benefits and appreciation for doing something in valor.

I think plenty of people can look at both their little world and the big picture. That is why we have domestic relations and foreign relations. There are plenty of people who got us into this war and plenty of people who are mishandling the situation at various levels. I’m sure they would all appreciate your advice on how to exit Iraq in the most successful way.

Cell phones used by another customer in line is an annoyance.

Phone use by the teenaged clerk who is more interested in talking to his/her friends is one of my pet peeves. Drives me nuts. I’ve quit patronizing more than one store because management couldn’t get their help to focus on customer service.

LOL to the poster who told the cell phone user to “get to the sex part, that’s all we care about anyway.”
