Crime increasing, comfort decreasing
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I was talking with my mom the other day, catching up with what has been going on in our busy lives. I mentioned Valente Carbajal-Otero and Erix Eliaser Vallecillo-Matute, the two men who were murdered at the apartment at Promenade at Berkeley, located on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard last week. The killings are the first in the city of Duluth since June 14, 2004.
“You know, that happened just down the street from me,” I said.
“Really? I didn’t realize it was that close. That’s just a little past the Publix, isn’t it?”
“That’s the one,” I replied. “That’s where my friend Leala used to live. My friend Richard used to live there as well, back when it was Northwood Lakes apartment, right when it first opened. That was almost 15, maybe 20 years ago, I think.”
“Oh dear,” she said. “I hope it’s not turning into Norcross. My dear Norcross. Has it been that long?”
We moved north to Duluth from Norcross 20 years ago. Norcross was then what Duluth is starting to become now. The congestion on Pleasant Hill Road is reminiscent of the congestion on Jimmy Carter Boulevard back in the day. New neighborhoods were going up left and right. Increased traffic was choking and strangling the lifeblood of the two lane roads at Spalding Drive and Winters Chapel Road.
You can sign up free for scangwinnett.com, and they will send you daily e-mails of the people who have been arrested within a specified ZIP code. I have watched over the last couple of years the changes in the number of people who have graced the reservation list into Sheriff Conway’s Concrete Inn (aka the Gwinnett Detention Center), and I have noticed the list of names increasing on a daily basis. Traffic violations mostly, but more and more there are cases of shoplifting, drugs, and assault.
It’s logical to assume that, as the population increases, so will the crime rate. It’s statistics and probability. The more people inhabit an area, the more targets become available to more people who want to take advantage of them. Because of this, I am not ready to say that Duluth is ready become the next backdrop for Hollywood’s next great action blockbuster.
I am, however, more willing to lock my door at night. I am more willing to lock my car door when I enter a store. I glance around a little more frequently when I walk alone down the sidewalk. And, like my mother, I resent the loss of innocence.
Do you feel more wary in your community than you used to?

Bill, if you are just now more regularly locking your car and home, you are lucky you haven’t already been burglarized. I don’t think Duluth was ever Mayberry, at least in your lifetime. Trust in people, but lock your doors. BTW, have you found any pattern to the arrests? Such as age of arrestees, particular streets, particular apartment complexes, legal status (oops, did I say that?)

I am a 21 year resident of Duluth and it sickens me to see what Duluth has become. Pleasant Hill is looking like a slum area and I cannot WAIT to get out of here (moving to Barrow County).
It is truly a shame that Duluth has been allowed to deteoriate this much. Having “Code Enforcement” officers is too little, too late.

I fled Duluth 4 years ago to Sugar Hill/Buford area. My neighborhood in Duluth went downhill rather quickly, and I was lucky to sell when I did.
I love my neighborhood in Sugar Hill. Large lots, space between neighbors, wide roads, and friendly people. I feel very safe and sometimes forget to lock my basement door.
There has not been any crime in my area but I know its just a matter of time. Too bad our elected officials won’t do something about the riff raff. Instead they pass laws that allow 8 people to live in one house. That means 8 cars in the driveway, yard, and street per house……..

I was born, and have lived all of my 53 years, in the Buford/Sugar Hill area. During most of my life, I felt safe and happy in my home and neighborhood.
Not anymore. When I happen to be home, I keep my doors locked….no more days of the door open with only the screen-door closed to keep out the insects.
There is a constant flow of people on foot…many carrying backpacks which make me think from that and their haggard appearence, that they’re homeless. A lot of them nervously looking around in every yard they walk past. I’m not the only one alerted to them, and watch as they slowly pass by. We no longer put out-going mail in our mail boxes, because those same pedestrian’s have been opening them. We meet the mailman at the box each afternoon so mail is not left in the box.
The number of vehicles who come into my drive, one asking me for a street number that doesn’t exist….the others hastly retreating when they spot someone’s home. No, it’s not our imagination. My family and I, as well as our neighbors, are well aware of it…and we’re watching out for each other.
Charliejoe, you are correct. Everyone, take a look at scangwinnett and you’ll quickly find the patterns. Doesn’t take a genius to figure out who’s the majority residents in our county’s B&B.
I resent spending my life, and my tax dollars, trying to be a productive citizen in a good community, to now being afraid to be in my home alone….my neighbor’s having to lock down every bicycle, lawn mower, even children’s toys because they’re being stolen left & right. There are six men living in one house in the neighborhood, and at least one of them is outside regularly, blasting their car stero with a constant ‘thump, thump’. When you can hear it 100 yards away, while you’re in your basement, it’s too loud. They spot the police before they make it to their house, the music is turned off and they run inside the house.
But, they’re not running me off. I obtained a license to carry a gun, practice regularly at a range, and I’m not afraid to use it to defend myself and what’s mine. I’m here to stay.

Trust me, if the same can happen to Duluth, it can happen in Barrow County too. Stop running! Positive changes can happen if you work with your government to make changes. Attend the public hearings and voice your opinions and report any illegal activity each and everytime you see it. I’m on the lookout in my Lawrenceville neighborhood everytime I’m out and about. I see great changes coming and I’m going to continue to be an active citizen. You can too!

The problem spot in Duluth is those cheap apartments. I also got scangwinnett regularly. Most of crimes in 30096 came from those apartments in Pleasant Hill/Satellite road.
City of Duluth is still ok place, but Gwinnett place mall is definitely in need of big time revitalization. What holds city of Duluth’s future may depend on revitalization of that area. The demise of a couple of high rise projects certainly didn’t help the cause.

Atlanta is a lovely city. We, the citizens of this city must be vigillant and smart at all times and not let the minority evil-dooers chase us away from here….crime is everywhere, it’s important how we handle it….Wake up, If we keep the opportunities open for poredators…they are out there waiting….so let’s smarten up and be vigillane..hope the law enforcement is listening and will be more aggressive….!!!!!!!

Jane’s right stop running, how did Norcross and Jimmy Carter become what they are/were? I say are/were because there is a CID now at least making a stand, it may take a few years, but it will make a come back.
I place the blame on the commissioners, like the CEO’s of American auto makers, they couldn’t see the change until it was too late. Now we’re playing catch-up, a QOL unit that finds itself overwhelmed and unable to do the job. And finally, finally, finally at least one commissioner figured out what a SINGLE family house means.
The over developement continues unabated, no mall too small and no sub-divison too large. The one bright spot for my neighborhood, there is no place left to build. I purchased it in 93’, put a lot work into it and I never ran from anything, don’t plan on taking it up now.

Another big problem is that there is perception out that that Hispanic population don’t have bank account and carry a lot of cashes. So they are targeted of many crimes, including many bums who drive from Atlanta. I read a report that more than half of death victims in Gwinnett this year are hispanic descendents.

So does 國際銀行 along with Global Commerce Bank offend you in some way?

ScanGwinnet today had three white boys, two for simple assault, one for child abuse, no foreigners, go figure. That is for the Lilburn zip which starts at Singleton.
Can’t blame everything on illegals, I know it’s real easy, but get real people.

Hi Bill, Norcross is too busy busting the “johns” who are out looking for prostitutes to crack down on violent crime. Maybe, busting johns is just a little more safer than taking on the large street gangs in Norcross. Now, those same gangs are moving right up Buford highway into the downtown Duluth area. I hate to profile, but they seem mostly Hispanic. If our country had a tougher immigration policy or actually tried rounding up the illegals, it would impact the gangs too. But there are too many excuses as to why they can not do that. Or they are afraid of being called racist just for enforcing our countries laws. Look at how Cobb County leaders are under attack from the Hispanic community. For some reason the term “illegal” immigrant means nothing. My mother-in-law is an immigrant for Austria. It took her months to be allowed into the U.S. She was kept on Ellis Island for more than 30 days while her background and health was checked out. But she is white. And whites cannot yell racism, can they? Just send a note to the Gwinnett police to keep the pressure on those dangerous prostitutes and soon we will all be able to walk down the streets again and feel totally safe.

Hi Bruce, Just got back from a late night dinner with my wife and daughter. I’m not sure what date you are asking about. If it was when my mother-in-law came to the U.S. it was 1952. If it is regarding the Norcross police busting the johns, it was last week and the AJC made a huge story about it. Now, this week, two folks are gunned down in the same area.

It was about Ellis Island, I was checking when my grand parents arrived, they give you the ship and all kinds of info, the site is free if you’re interested. It gives you a lot of history of Ellis Island and immigration in general. In the early 50’s they made it hard to immigrate to the United States, I think it was because of the Big Red scare of the times.
Like I said above about the problems we face now, it didn’t happen overnight, the county was asleep at the switch and it’s hard playing catch up.

Do you feel more wary in your community than you used to?
Yep!
On the subject of illegal aliens, it is really very simple. They don’t belong here, the particular problems they cause don’t belong here; neither do the problems that are related to them, belong here. Gwinnett has plenty of problems caused by citizens of this country, much like is happening all over the nation. The “thug culture” and now this “don’t snitch” bunk that is sweeping the country, needs laid to rest in very short order. The law abiding citizens need to send a very firm message that being a punk is not cool, allowing crime and covering up for it is not an admirable trait.
Sheriff Conway is going to be up for election again soon, I’m certainly hoping and looking for a new person to take over as Sheriff of the county; akin to the Sheriffs of Cobb County and Maricopa County Arizona. Once again in a call too often ignored by our government the need for classes in citizenship should be part of the social studies and history curriculums. The respect for law has to be restored and it is up to us as citizens to see that this respect is duly earned no matter if we have to vote every single politician now in office, out own their butts!

Actually puddin I don’t understand your point at all. What does “who is being arrested” have to do with non-English signs?
I will repeat: is your complaint ANY non-English on a sign or businesses that have no English at all on the front (a situation I don’t think exists except in the minds of people that hate seeing another language). How far are you willing to take this? Not eat at Golden Buddha because it has “金佛” on its sign?
I have been to a bait store in north Georgia—and this relates to this subject how?

Respect for “law and order” would be greatly enhanced if the police weren’t used by the governments that employ them as revenue generation agents or what I like to call highwaymen (named for the bandits that used to rob people of their valuables as they traveled along the roads).
And don’t give me “They are only enforcing the law.” When the police are too busy to run a car through a neighborhood, but not too busy to set up idiotic seatbelt checkpoints then we know where their priorities are.
And if police were so concerned about slowing people down, they would sit on the side of the road with the blue lights on—not sit on top of an overpass 50 yards from the next county line.
As for cooperating with law enforcement—well—it all depends—Martha Stewart and Scooter Libby would have made out much better if their answers to the investigators had been “f-off cop” or some version of the same.

For the ones who said I can’t wait to leave, intead of leaving, go to neiborhood meeting. If we all leave, crime will keep rising. If we stay and fight crime, maybe the crimminals will leave.

The problem is Michael is that often the highwaymen ambushes are made so they most of those ensnared aren’t citizens of the community that the police work for.
The Atlanta police that hide off Northside drive and capture those coming into that city to work—but—live in say Cobb. If they complain to the Atlanta police (which is probably one of the most corrupt police forces in the country) how far will that get them? And since they wisely choose to live outside the city limits of Atlanta—they can’t vote anyone in or out that can put pressure on the Atlanta police.
Atlanta gets what it wants—a tax on people that can’t vote or complain. And Atlanta is hardy the only one that does this—Cobb police love to lurk along the Bartow and Paulding County lines.

Ntstar4 makes an awesome point. In addition to that, the commissioners need to stop the development of so many apartment complexes. People who do not pay property tax and have no stake in the county aren’t impacted as harshly from the county deterioration.

A police office is in constant danger unlike the teacher or the resturant employee. You should be very thankful for them. Not everyone is willing to put their life on the line for your saftey. Keep that in mind. Cindy you are correct the county commissioners use our tax dollar for so many foolish things like my pet peeve the unwanted and un needed sidewalks to nowhere. Wouldn’t it be nice if this money could be used to pay the police officers more money so they could get more officers willing to do the job and many some of the complaints in the forum could be taken care of. The county police do an awesome job with the training and leadership they have. We just need more of them.

“Gwinnett moves toward majority minority a surge in the first six years of this century” I have always said that seemed to be the turning point. Check out the stats for the population back in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Around the time for the building of the Olympics, the “scum” began. As far as swangwinnett, I listen to that at times. How many “foreigners” are going to call the cops? Check out “gwinnettcountysheriff.com” docket book and you will see where the CRIME is. I hope they decide to be like Cobb County. The statics might change. Since several years ago, the county commissioners decided to take care of the Peachtree Corners area of Norcross and neglect the I-85 Corridor Area, this is what Gwinnett gets…a population explosion of foreigners and TROUBLES. Not to mention the schools failing to educate OUR American children and the Health Department being sucked dry by the “foreigners”, mostly Hispanic. Check out the Health Dept at Indian Trail. When you get by the tag line to get in you will see Mama’s pregnant with 2-3 kids and pregnant teens. They have a hard time with birth control and multiply like flies. Our system is being SUCKED dry. The Americans are the ones who are going to be denied assistance because there are no funds available.
TO BRUCE “Norcross victim killed by robber identified.” According to the info/sketch it was BLACK KILLING MEXICAN. Notice this is not white related. If you start looking at the Sheriff’s website, you will gain ALOT of insight on Gwinnett’s problem with crime. I got out of Gwinnett almost 3 yrs ago. My neighborhood(JCB& NT) had graffiti, disabled vehicles, MANY cars and only 2 Americans on the block. You could hear guns being shot from the apartments. Gangs all over. Almost afraid to go out after dark. My house was the last one sold on the block. Most are getting foreclosed on or just stay on the market.
It took Gwinnett years, probably about 20, to get this way, therefore it’s going to take alot of time to clean up the scum and criminals. I believe Duluth is getting the scum from Norcross. Fungus has a way of growing. The GPD has a big job ahead of them. They seem to be overworked and underpaid. Until Gwinnett decides to spend some money to clean up the mess they let accumulate, the “fungus” will continue to grow. Gwinnett needs to follow Cobb’s steps and check out and DEPORT the illegals. This needs to be their first step…..Oh! how they will pucker!

Wake up:
Actually Wake up, I’d expect cops to go in stores after badguys. I also expect them to put their life on the line to protect unarmed civilians in harms way—including me. I expect that because that is their job—jobs they volunteered for—no one drafted them. Same for those in Iraq—they volunteered for this job. If facing people with guns who want to kill you is not your cup of tea, then I advise you to seek employment in areas where facing people with guns that want to kill you is much less likely.
A person doing the job they are paid to do is not a hero in my book. I guess I just have higher standards in this regard”

Hey friends and neighbors,
A couple os quickies.
First, I did not intend for this to be an illegal immigrant blog. Nowhere did I mention them. Yes, it’s a factor, but it’s not the only factor.
Second, while we may have problems with some aspects of police enforcement, let us remember that these officers put their lives on the line for us every day. I’m not saying don’t offer criticism. I’m saying don’t make it personal.
Third, why are the police the only ones who can do something about it? Dianne is doing something about her protection issues, for example. Why do we have to wait for elected officials to catch up? We can vote them out, yes. Maybe we should. But, why can we as people only act every 4 years?

And if you think that if you have never done this or that job you have no right to complain then your mental prowess is far less than even I feared.
Actually, ntstar4, no real negative experience with cops except the fact the GCPD seems to be too busy to actually do community policing but not too busy to set up revenue producing road blocks during those idiotic “click it or ticket” campaigns. As I have stated above I don’t like them used as legal bandits for the coffers of government.
And vix:
Since they are agents of the government, which we support with our taxes—I have every right to complain.

http://www.gwinnettcounty.com/cgi-bin/gwincty/egov/ep/gcNavView.do?path=Departments%7CPlanning+%26+Development%7CForms%7CCode+Violation+Reporting+Form
You’ll notice that it isn’t mandatory to give your own address. And judging by the disclaimer at the bottom re: Georgia Open Records Act, I’d probably do it anonymously unless you don’t care if the violator knows who called him in. I would assume that people who commit lots of code violations are more likely to stalk and beat/kill a person who called them in, but I am generalizing ;) Here’s another reason not to: I made a mistake in Hall County asking for info about how to report code violations and ended up receiving a few myself. Don’t know if it was a misunderstanding by the CEO or meant to teach me a lesson not to bother him with complaints, but I corrected the problems (turns out you can’t store a classic car in your carport without a current registration, even though it is in process of being repaired and isn’t driven—who knew?) Also, you can’t store anything under your eave by your house if it is even remotely visible from someone else’s property.
Anyway, report away! Spread the URL to all your coworkers and friends. Tell your neighbors. Post it on other blogs, etc…maybe it will do some good. Let’s use the pyramid scheme in our favor.

Anywhere filthy nigs and mexicans choose to live always turn into filthy, crime ridden ghettos. It’s simply a fact.
