Atlanta police Thursday were investigating the predawn shooting of a man who had been walking near Piedmont Park.

The unidentified victim was at the intersection of Monroe Drive and Amsterdam Avenue, talking on his cellphone, when he was approached by two other men, Atlanta police Detective J.D. Stephens said.

The suspects demanded money, then shot him several times, Stephens said.

The victim was able to call 911 on his cellphone, and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Stephens said a cable company employee working nearby heard the shots, but did not witness the 5 a.m. shooting.
