Vegan parents convicted of murder in the starvation death of their newborn are scheduled to return to court Wednesday morning for what is expected to be an emotional sentencing hearing.
Jade Sanders, 27, and her boyfriend, Lamont Thomas, 31, claimed they thought their newborn, Crown, was small because they were only feeding him soy milk, organic apple juice, and soy formula and breast milk.
But prosecutors say the problem isn’t what the parents fed Crown, who was 3 1/2 pounds when he died at six weeks.
Instead, prosecutors convinced jurors the couple intentionally neglected and underfed their child, who was born in a bathtub and had never been to a doctor.
The parents face automatic life sentences in prison for the murder charges, but the judge could also tack on additional time for their conviction on first-degree child cruelty charges.
Their parents, who have supported them and say their grandson’s death was an accident, are expected to testify on their behalf.
