Cobb police charged a Marietta childcare worker with involuntary manslaughter and child deprivation Monday in the death last month of an 11-month-old boy.

Barbara Jean Jones, 43, was held on $25,000 bond in the Cobb County Jail on Tuesday following her first appearance in Magistrate Court on the charges.

Cobb police allege that Jones, a licensed childcare worker, left the 11-month-old boy unattended in a car seat in a bedroom in her home.

The boy died on July 6 from “asphyxiation, due to strangulation,” said Officer Wayne Delk, a Cobb police spokesman.

Delk said that the baby choked “on the straps from the car seat. The child was placed improperly in the car seat.”

According to a police report, the baby was put “in a car seat to sleep in the bedroom” between 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. Almost three hours later when Jones and another woman checked on the baby “he was not breathing.”

The baby was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where he was declared dead, Delk said
