Get to know Lt. Rose

My job:

I’ve been with Sandy Springs PD since February of 2006 after my retirement from Fulton County.

What I do:

I am in charge of Public Information and Community Relations which involves anti-crime programs, Neighborhood Watch, and other programs involving the community.

Why I got into police work:

I developed an interest in police work while I was in the U.S. Navy in San Diego. I never had a “calling” to it, but rather thought it would be an interesting and exciting job. I had originally planned to apply for the Los Angeles Police Department, but decided to return to Atlanta. I worked in sales for a year then decided to apply for a police officer position in the metro area.

Family:

Married to Detective Sandy, four kids, two grandkids and two dogs including Roxy the Rotweiller whom many believe is evil. We live in Forsyth County just south of Metropolitan Ball Ground.

Age and birthplace:

I was born in 1952 at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Cop career

I began my career with Emory University Police in 1976, then moved to the Chamblee Police Department until 1980, when I was hired by Fulton County. I spent eight years in the uniform division in north Fulton. In June 1988 I moved to the detective division in a new program of juvenile drug investigations. In early 2002, I took over the neighborhood watch system in north Fulton County.

Pet peeves:

I don’t like whining. There is a difference between addressing problems or discussing differences and whining. Whiners don’t offer a solution. Don’t whine.

Favorite TV cop:

Officer Pete Malloy. Watching “Adam-12” probably gave me some unconscious push toward going into police work. I thought he was as cool as they come. Sergeant Friday of “Dragnet” finishes a close second, but I could never lecture the bad guys like he did at the end of each show. He could go 4-5 paragraphs without missing a beat. I could never get all those words right. The third coolest TV cop was Don Meredith, who occasionally starred in “Police Story.” He ate a belligerent guy’s driver’s license during one episode. That wasn’t realistic, but it was cool in a rebellious way.

Personal motto:

Don’t rush through your life. Enjoy your day, good or bad. Life is short.

I have recently discovered “View from the Cop” and enjoy reading it.

You have a very humorous way of writing about the events in your job.

Thanks.

I understand Pete Malloy, Joe Friday and Don Meredith, but you left out George C Scott in “The New Centurions.” I’d add Peggy Lipton of “Mod Squad,” but for different reasons.

I’m 10-7.

Hey Det. Rose, I am a teenager and approve of your door method. It is a great solution and I am proud to say I have not had that happen to me….yet. Your column is a great one to read and keeps me occupied with your humour and sarcasm.
