Heady holiday reading

The Gwinnett County public schools system has posted a massive 800-page document on its website that explains what, exactly, the district will do if granted more flexibility to educate students.

According to an AJC story by Aileen Dodd, “The system has promised to raise the bar on student achievement in exchange for the freedom to bypass certain state mandates on education.”

The state Department of Education would have to approve the changes, and may do so in January.

Details, I assume, on how the bar will be raised, and what mandates will be skirted, should appear in the posted document. Parents and teachers have complained about being left out of the process. Guess this is the school system’s answer: Read all about it - online.

So if you have some free time during the holidays, give the document a read.

Then blog about right here.

Happy holidays to all y’all. I will be on vacation through Jan. 4.

Peace!

I’ve read the documents, I’ve read HB1209. I’ve read just about everything pertaining to this board action - the approval process is a mockery, and everyone knows it. If ever there was a done deal - this is it.

The district will not be held accountable by the state leaders, our local administrators will not be held accountable by our district, so why on earth would anyone even begin to believe that our local leaders would be held accountable to the parents and teachers, much less the students who only get one shot at this thing called a “world class education”.

This is all about figuring out how to flex the budget by flexing the rules. The joke is on us - increasing student achievement by not going below a state level if we are already ahead of the state level? Who are they kidding ?

Jim D- I know it is no joke, honestly. The frustration got the better of me. I am doing everything I can to point out the deficiencies and falsehoods of the document to the people who will have to vote one way or another at the state board. If you are interested in being part of that effort, let me know how to get a hold of you.

800 pages for J. Alvin to say my will be done?
Like how many people in Gwinnett County didn’t know J. Alvin runs the GCPS show. This must be an exercise to remove all doubts from the minds of those at the state level who might think differently?

I can’t disagree with opposing unfunded mandates. There should be an amendment to the state constitution that prohibits the state from legislating unfunded mandates. Come to think of it that would be a good idea if it were applied to the U.S. Congress.

Here’s some more Christmas reading.

IILEGAL IMMIGRANT UPDATE:

A Norcross man is awaiting federal sentencing — at least 15 years in prison — for his participation in a sex trafficking ring involving young Mexican women.

Francisco Cortes-Meza, 25, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, pleaded guilty last week to sex trafficking after forcing a 22-year-old woman, also an illegal immigrant, to work as a prostitute from a home in Norcross, according to immigration agents and a statement from David Nahmias, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia. The sex trafficking offense carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years.

Just some more hard working illegals, er undocumented workers (They taught me that in Public Schools). At least he didn’t have to go to school in Gwinnett.
