Museum needs new home, seeks old house

It was the home of Duluth’s first female mayor.

The Victorian-style manor also served as a children’s clinic when the town didn’t have a hospital. Doctors would perform tonsillectomies and other operations. Alice Harrell Strickland - the mayor of Duluth in 1922-1923 - occasionally assisted.

“People know that home,” said Judy Wilson, president of the Duluth Historical Society. “Descendants have been born there. People have been in and out of it, and they know its grounds. If we don’t preserve it, it will be gone.”

The 108-year-old Strickland house sits on three acres about a block north of Duluth’s historic downtown. Strickland’s granddaughter, Alice Ziegler, owns the house. Her son lives in it. It’s listed for sale for $3.5 million, and Wilson’s group is interested.

A city-owned house located on West Lawrenceville Street serves as the historical society’s current museum. The 1940s granite-style cottage will be torn down next year when the area is turned into a mixed-use development. So the historical society needs a new home.

Wilson told me the Strickland house - where babies were delivered and sick children received care - is the ideal place to store and display vestiges of the past. She noted that the refurbished house has parking space for school buses, plenty of “old-growth” trees and an attached building that could be used for offices.

But like many things, it takes money to make it happen. The society, with the help of city officials, plans to apply for grants. A fund-raiser is under way - the Duluth Historical Society Strickland House Fund. An account has been set up at Gwinnett Community Bank.

Then, there’re the dogs.

Replicas of about 25 labs, bulldogs and other breeds have been decorated by local artists and displayed about town. The canine art will be auctioned off to the highest bidder at 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Red Clay Theatre. Proceeds benefit the historical society. (For more info, visit www.dogsdaysofduluth.com.)

Initially, the historical society wants to lease the property, an arrangement that would give them more time to acquire it. Metro Atlanta is notorious for demolishing buildings, not preserving them. Wilson doesn’t want the Strickland house to suffer such a fate.

“We are already losing so much of our history with buildings being torn down for renovations,” she said. “If we don’t save this piece of history, it will also be gone.”

Just like everything else.

And from Todays Gwinnett Illegal Immigrant News:

Sketch of slasher released

*He came up behind her as she was walking to her car, demanded money and slashed her face with a knife when she tried to run, according to a police report. The cut was deep, extending from her eyebrow to her mouth. *

The suspect is described as an Hispanic male with a thin build, between 25 and 30 years old, about 6 feet tall and 150 pounds. He had a thin mustache and goatee, sideburns extending past his ear, and he wore a white baseball cap with a gray polo shirt and blue jeans. The victim told police he had a Mexican accent.

This just in:

Gwinnett County police seized nearly $7 million worth of cocaine during a Monday afternoon traffic stop on I-85.

An officer stopped a 2001 Jeep Cherokee for a traffic violation near Lawrenceville Suwanee Road, and discovered that the driver, Roberto Hernandez-Avila of Lawrenceville, didn’t have a valid license, Gwinett police Cpl. David Schiralli said.

Damn Americans, too lazy to do their own slashing and drug trafficking.

Idiot,

Thanks for living up to your moniker and making my point.

The US has enough internal problems, we don’t need to import any more.

Duluth continues to promote its artsy fartsy image and build its huge government buildings just across the street from the BP (at 120 and Buford Highway) where there’s always a throng of illegals loitering. And that’s not even at the APPROVED labor hall spot where the illegals are SUPPOSED to stay according to the city government. (That’s right - Duluth actually has an official LEGAL spot for ILLEGALS to seek work).

And where the illegals haven’t taken over you need to read Korean to understand any of the signs.

If Duluth wants to put anything in a museum it should be the law abiding, English speaking citizen who seems to be an endangered species around Duluth.

But so long as a few bored house wives have their little dog statues to play with everything is fine. Little dog statues will divert attention from the illegals, Korean/Spanish strip malls, Wal Marts and apartments on Pleasant Hill and the continued downhill slide of what used to be a nice place to live.

And now we’ll have Duluth’s Mayor Shirley running the county the same way she’s run Duluth into the ground for the last 15 years.

God help us. We’re screwed.

Cindy and other readers: Be sure to read Saturday’s print column, which appears on a special community page of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. I plan to address the whole NAACP-Wilbanks stand off. Check back on this site tomorrow for a column on a Parkview High student who has written a book. She’s pretty interesting.

And Today’s Illegal Immigrant Story:

Seventeen large bundles of marijuana were confiscated from the cargo area of a van that was pulled over at U.S. Highway 29 in Lilburn for following a vehicle too closely and having window tints that were too dark, said Stacey Bourbonnais, spokeswoman for the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities charged Jorge Gonzalez-Vasquez, 28, of Lilburn, with trafficking marijuana, which had an estimated street value of $1.8 million.

Gwinnett is invaded with Illegal Immigrant drug dealers and kidnappers, but what does Blubbering Badie write about? A Dog Museum.

I don’t generally buy newspapers but when I do it’s the Sunday paper with the coupons…but with it being a holiday weekend, i’m not even sure if they’ll have coupons. I’m liable to go ahead and buy it though if that section (that you mentioned, Badie) is also in the Sunday paper.

The pet rabbit likes to have newspaper in his cage, so really I do need to buy one. I’m not saying your section would be rabbit cage material…it’s not, but the rest of the paper would come in handly for the next month or so.

Badie and Mikey,

The Commerce Department said gross domestic product rose at an annual rate of 3.3 percent for the April-June period, as a weaker dollar helped boost U.S. exports. That exceeded the government’s initial estimate of a 1.9 percent increase as well as economists’ forecast of a 2.7 percent gain.

Blubbering Badie claimed there was a Recession a few months ago. Then claimed the stimulus checks didn’t helpt the economy.

Where is The Blubberer now? Undoubtedly touching himself in anticipation of Hussein Obama’s speech tonight.

Sorry Chicken Little Mikey, no economic depression, just your manic depression.

LT, I think you are touching yourself in anticipation of Rick’s next post. You can’t wait can you?

By Jais

August 28, 2008 11:38 AM | Link to this

I know I am!

Let’s start with blacks. I mean…look at Rick, here- a stupid negro that postures like he’s white or cares about anything but church’s chicken and fubu jackets. Ten bucks says he votes for Obama knoing full-well he can’t lead a rendition of row your boat, let alone a country. But Rick does care about that as long as he sees another dumb negro on top.

You see, any place with a black in charge fails. This has been proven factually every single time, in any subject. Blacks just arent responsible enough to tend their own affairs or smart enough to better themselves. I think maybe 3% of african americans aren’t just stupid n*ers. The rest need to kill themselves or be exterminated, there’s no fixing their race and that’s a fact. Check any source.

As for hispanics…sure, they are stupid as rocks (more so than blacks) and they multiply like cockroaches, and they drain the money out of anything they touch, but at least they arent the pig, lazy police who ignore them when they sit in droves at businesses along buford highway from dekalb all the way to buford. If that was my white a* or Rick’s big fat black a*, we would both be sitting in a cop car on the way to jail for loitering where we don’t belong. The cops refuse to enforce the laws on the books and slap you in the face with those hispanics.

Why don’t we get back on track, though- LT5000 is dead-on accurate. We need police who will attack illegal immigration in this state once and for all. I cannot even fill my gas tank without being approached by dangerous, intoxicated aliens with god knows what in their pockets. The least the police could do is scare them back into their harbor zone so they stay away from the average citizen.

If they buy the strickland house, I want my picture on the wall with an arrow pointing to it and a plaqe that reads “This poor asswipe is what was here before the little hacienda that now stands in little mexico”
