Still kicking
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Debbie Haralson called and left me a message this morning.
She wanted to say how sorry she was that the print edition of AJC Gwinnett News has been discontinued. The last edition was published Sunday. She also said she planned to do something that I hope all of you (‘cept for a miscreant or two), will do, too.
“I’ll make it a point to check your blog,” she told me.
I hope you all do the same. With the demise of the print edition, I plan to update my blog daily with comments and news bursts that may interest you, anger you, make you cry or make you happy. I welcome your comments.
I also still plan to continue writing an online column that will appear on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Moreover, I will be a regular contributor to a Community Voices page that will appear in the AJC on Saturdays. That column will focus on Gwinnett as well.
So stay in touch. Keep reading. And keeping posting.
Now, on to the news: I see the Snellville City Council is to address the new crematory tonight. City Manager Russell Treadway is scheduled to give a presentation on whether there could be an environmental impact if the city allows the Cremation Society of the South to open near some homes.
What do you think the report will say?

I don’t think there is anything more of an environmental hazard than having a graveyard in your neighborhood. I mean, come on, hundreds of rotting human carcasses in the ground?? how environmentaly friendly is that? All that formalin seaping into the ground water over time?? I’d be much more concerned about that than a crematorium. People should be burned rather than buried—all that biohazardous body waste. It wouldn’t bother me a bit to have one moving next door to me—they’d be a lot more quiet, that I am sure of.

As Georgians, I think we need to stand up and support our father country and collectively give Russia a punch in the nose. Let’s get over there and stop this tyranny.

Yaaay!.. Rick will still be here to spread such falsehoods such as there being a Recession and the danger or Tasers.
And I can’t wait for more great stories on Human Trumpets.
Of course, there will be obligatory Obama infomercials that will be coming fast and hard as Election Day approaches.
I guess the AJC hasn’t had their circulation and ad revenues drop enough by hiring thrid rate bloggers.

I think the report will say what the City of Snellville wants it to say.

We should all follow Brian’s lead. It is immediately clear from his post that HE would make a much better writer. HA!

Rick,
I just read Beth Warren’s article on the crematory issue. Funny how the City of Snellville wants to get into the EPA and EPD business. These “hearings” that they are holding and Kautz’s statement that she is bringing in an expert is laughable. Why are they not speaking or interviewing the EPA? Funny how the City Manager can’t find good enough information in this country that he has to go and find information outside the USA to defend his case. I guess we need to outlaw death and crematories. Now the Pastor’s will be out of the business of saving lives. LAUGHABLE!
I work all over the State of Georgia and testify on land use issues with utility companies and this “over-governing” is going to cost the City of Snellville. I have seen it happen many times before. They made their bed by having the zoning in place years prior to the applicant starting construction. The outcome will be interesting to watch.
Good that you are covering these and other odd and interesting topics.

Rick, the world is changing. I suspect it won’t be too many years before there will not be a printed version of the paper.
I rarely read a printed version. I much prefer getting my news on-line.
I encourage you to continue to do what you are doing. The additional post you are proposing is something I’m very glad of.
Of course there are always the “miscreant or two” that are lurking around with nothing good to say about anything. Must be a miserable life to constantly spew venom, 24/7 …
I look forward to reading your articles for years to come.

The old morning constitution will never be the same. Wireless laptops in restrooms?
Geezzzz! Who would have thunk it.
There must be a zoning issue somewhere in all this that conflicts health and safety.
Get on it Snellville!!

Good morning, people. Just wanted to catch up and respond to some of your comments.
Kathleeen: Thanks for your kind words. And yes, I will “keep up the good fight, and tell it like I see it.”
Tommy: What’s up? When are we going to grab lunch at Rexall’s, man? As for your comments regarding the future of the paper: You’re right. I would say that, in 3 to 4 years, there will probably be metropolitan areas that don’t even have a daily newspaper. Or we could see situations in which media companies that are in cities of close proximity — say Chattanooga and Atlanta - combine resources to distribute and print a paper. Who knows. Times have - and will - continue to change for this industry as well as others. Be safe! PEACE
Odd: I read Warren’s article regarding the crematory this a.m. as well. Struck me as odd also that the city is finding it difficult to buttress the contention that environmental hazards abound when it comes to these operations. Guess we’ll have to wait and see how this one turns out.

In today’s high-speed world news is news for the whole of, mmm, maybe 15 seconds?
Print media is destined to a niche’ at best. If it’s not online or on the tube, it’s down the drain. News and opinion will take the form of multimedia interactive publication.
