Illegal immigration on the campaign trail

Local politicians have a surefire way to draw media attention, brand themselves and acquire cachet on the campaign trail.

Just utter two words: Illegal immigration.

They pronounce their strong opposition to it. They say they deplore it and lament how illegal immigrants have ruined - or are ruining - this stellar county and its towns. They add a few hot-button topics like declining property values, crime and packed schools.

Then maybe, just maybe, they toss out an idea to curb the tide. Or they pledge, if elected, to work diligently to do something, anything, to stop the decline and decay.

Often, a concerned citizenry and voting public hang on every word. It doesn’t matter who the politico is, what his or her track record shows or, most importantly, how impractical or farcical their proposals appear. It’s a can’t-lose platform.

Last week, the AJC Gwinnett News ran an article about how illegal immigration is a major focus in some county commission campaigns.

Commissioner Lorraine Green is challenging incumbent Charles Bannister for the county chairman’s post. Her campaign issued a statement that called on Bannister to “end his continual roadblocks to the implementation of the 287(g) illegal immigration enforcement program” or “place these decisions in someone else’s hands.”

Green referred to a federal act that allows local law enforcement authorities to determine whether inmates are here legally, regardless of the offense they are picked up for, and to refer them to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for possible deportation.

The county has ponied up $1.5 million to pay for 18 new deputies to run the program, which should be in place by the fall. The matter, Bannister has said, is now in the sheriff’s hands.

But Green’s statement said enforcement could start immediately if the county cancelled contracts with the State Department of Corrections to house state inmates. Then, currently crowded local jails would have space for illegal immigrants.

In a related matter, Shirley Lasseter, the former mayor of Duluth running for the District 1 seat, announced a proposal to build a new federal detention center for illegal immigrants. She lacked details, but told me when we talked Friday that they would be forthcoming and shared with the public.

Days later, her opponent Carol Hassell issued a statement that questioned the logic and rationale of an “immigrant” detention center. She also criticized Lasseter for creating a “sanctuary zone” in downtown Duluth for illegal immigrants.

“It hurts our property values all over downtown Duluth, as well as the whole district, to have illegal aliens openly walking around the streets,” the statement read.

See, not only do politicians plan to fix the problem. They can tell who’s illegal and who’s not. Just by looking.

Everybody’s talking tough, ready to clean up Dodge City. They seek election to get rid of “them,’ the problems they cause, the trouble they make, the burden they’ve become.

So be it.

But also be forewarned, my Gwinnett brothers and sisters.

Weigh the grandstanding, exchanges and pledges carefully, no matter the messenger. State and local attempts to deal with illegal immigrants typically get struck down because they encroach on individual Constitutional rights (even illegal immigrants).

Illegal immigration is one of the most convoluted and complex issues of the 21st century. Don’t let your justified concern for the county be exploited by professional politicians or office-seekers.

All encompassing is the Federal SAVE ACT(H.R.4088) that Speaker Nancy Pelosi is trying to derail along with the original two-tier border fence. We need ‘zero tolerance’ enforcement, that will give maximum arrest and detainment of predator employers of illegal immigrants. South Carolina just joined other states with new employer sanction law,but needs the added teeth of the SAVE ACT, which will strengthen its enforcement power. A new AMNESTY is in the works from Senator Obama, McCain which will flood America with even more of poor, illiterate foreign labor. McCain is a ‘dark horse’ because his original stand with pro-illegal immigrant groups. Many of them anti-sovereignty, extremist entities like Army of National Liberation and Mexicanos Sin Fronteras (Mexicans Without Borders, just to name one. How can we trust either McCain to seal our border, when he is a hard-core globalist? Most globalists are open border, free market zealots, whose agenda is the free movement of cheap labor in the North American Continent.

Those who steal across our perforated fence, includes the criminal element with a third world country mentality. Each day citizens are slain on the roads of America, by drunk illegal drivers. This is far from isolated case, because these accident reports are not necessary revealed by the biased press. Pedestrians have become ‘road kill’ daily, especially when the victims are innocent children. Do not expect to read about this carnage in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times You need to dig deeper in rural newspapers or the e-media on the Internet, to find the unsuppressed facts. Then we have the street gangs protected by ‘Sanctuary cities’ like Los Angeles. The unsuppressed news reports will tell you about the child pedophiles, female assaults, murders, robbers and Social security theft. Our government secretly skims from your payroll checks, 356 billion dollars annually to support the illegal immigration occupation of our nation. Unfortunately this is not all, because this doesn’t take into account expenditure on education, health care or our overcrowded prison system. NUMBERSUSA. LIBERTY POST, IMMIGRATION NEWS INDEXER, JUDICIAL WATCH, UNIPAC, GRASSFIRE, ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION JOURNAL These sites report the news, not to be found in the restricted corporate media.

I am with mark. Duluth is a harbor zone for illegal aliens. And Rick- The politicians can tell by TALKING to them that they are illegal aliens. I work across the street from downtown duluth’s illegal alien harbor zone and can tell you from being there every day it is a little piece of mexico. Nobody speaks a word of english and they wait all day long for people to come pick them up. By the way, their labor is no longer cheap- they are asking twice what they used to.

SHAME ON DULUTH POLICE DEPT. YOU ALL KNOW THEY ARE THERE AND REFUSE TO ENFORCE THE LAWS ON THE BOOKS.

As you can see, it’s up to the American people to demand a zero tolerance towards illegal immigration. Politicians, businesses and pro amnesty groups are selling out this nation on a daily basis. The mainstream media is already under the control of globalists, so don’t count on getting the facts straight from the networks. We are in a recession. Americans are losing their homes and jobs. Our government continues to give away billions in foreign aid and import foreign nationals to take jobs and drive down wages. How much more will the American people stand for? Our country has been taken hostage by corrupt polticians destroying our economy and way of life. Wake up America!

First and foremost, I would like to state that I do not support illegal immigration, however I am not oblivious to the fact that it’s not something new, it’s a problem the US has had for quite some time now.

My question is this: Why all of a sudden is Illegal Immigration the center of focus?.. We as “Americans” never want to point the finger at ourselves, our decisions, but instead it’s so much easier to blame someone else. The fact that we are in a recession now, has very little to do with Illegal immigration. I’ve noticed that it’s not so much that these PEOPLE are here in this country illegaly, but that we are losing money because of them,(…and I capatilize the word people, because we tend to forget that small detail), yet, the part that stings is, we as voters choose the politicians that take office…we choose our president… and we still whine when things aren’t going the way we want…wonder why?

Brittanicus,

Exactly how will the notorious SAVE ACT solve the Illegal Immigration problem? Isn’t this just another ENFORCEMENT ONLY approach like HR 4437 that is destined to fail? ENFORCEMENT ONLY legislation seems to handle only half of the problem. Does it resolve the labor issue of removing millions of people from the labor force? Is the E-Verify system not riddled problems? Does it do anything to increase LEGAL immigration to replace needed workers? The legislation seems to nothing more than another draconian effort that will only drive people further underground where they will be subject to more exploitation.

I’m very concerned that you note groups such as the “Army of National Liberation and Mexicanos Sin Fronteras (Mexicans Without Borders,” as if a large faction of the Illegal were somehow related to these groups. They are not. Then you profess that high profile anti-immigrant organizations will bring us the truth? Most of these are ultra conservative groups that regurgitate hate and fear. They also are known to exaggerate and distort the facts. All the crimes you mentioned, for example, are dwarfed by those committed by our own citizens. It seems that these commended groups are hardly groups that one would recommend to those in search of the truth.

Illegal immigration is not a complex issue at all, convoluted it is definitely that.

There is a good bit of credibility in what Carroll Hassel said about Duluth being a sanctuary zone or Sanctuary City. Over the years on several occasion sorties appearing in the local press validate that claim. As sincere as Shirley Lasseter may have become on the issue of illegal immigration, her proposal to build a new federal detention center for illegal immigrants is really not germane to county government. That would be a federal matter.

The 287(g) program that is clearly Constitutional could have been started long before Lorraine Green ever became a commissioner and the Sheriff could have probably had his 18 deputies long before now had he been a bit more politically deft and less acrimonious with former Commission Chairman Wayne Hill. This time around it is very likely now Commission Chairman Bannister will not aid the Sheriff as in the past. Whereas before he and Bill McKinney smooth things over.

Something should be said in regards to the pony-up of $1.5 million which no doubt may become a campaign issue used by the party now out of power in the county. Something, which voters should keep in mind prospectively speaking: A few years back the county ponied-up $1 million - as it was reported at the time which many may recall - in treating an injured illegal alien from Mexico, which the Mexican government refused to accept back into Mexico.

So forearmed is forewarned where unmerited expenditures are relative.

Not many are fooled by now as to how convoluted the illegal immigration issue is and remains. Where Democrats are posing only strong actions to be taken against the employers who hire illegal aliens and granting illegal aliens amnesty; the Republicans, now persuaded to enforce the laws against illegal aliens that ultimately will lead to deportations if forced attrition measures fail to compel the illegal aliens to return home voluntarily.

As most other advocates for sensible immigration reforms know both sides really don’t want to reach for the logical solution, which is to enforce the laws against the illegal aliens and the employers who hire them, with no amnesty for either party. But for what ever reasons the accused - if by innuendo only - Johnny-Come-Lately professional politicians have chosen to take-up our Pro-American cause we welcome their help in restoring law and order to the chaos and corruption that has been tolerated for far too long.

What if God is sending us the immigrants to see how we’ll treat them?

If you rednecks are so eager to fight, sign up. Tell the recruiter you seek a station in Iraq.

The Mexicans are hard working, they have great food and music, and their women are hot. Gladly trade all the white trash, republican meth heads.

So what does the Sheriff have to say?

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Sheriff Butch Conway said he hopes to have all those positions filled by July and to begin the new enforcement program by the fall. But first, Conway said, he’s got to solve the overcrowding at the jail, where the population usually hovers around 2,600. Until they’re “hired up” and staffing the new units, Gwinnett can’t qualify for the 287(g) program.

A quick way to start, Conway said, would be to restore those 126 beds to county control.

“The state pays the county $20 a day to keep state inmates under that contract,” Conway said. “My hard cost is about $44 a day to keep an inmate. So it’s costing us over a million dollars not to have those beds.”

Of the 13,000 foreign nationals who were brought into custody last year, Conway said, 360 were deported. Once the county becomes part of the 287(g) program, he said, that number will rise to 4,000-6,000 a year.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

From a conservative point of view the numbers are very fiscally appealing. As it appears keeping the State contract is actually costing the county money. With 13,000 foreign nationals brought into custody last year, the real possibility of deporting 4,000 to 6,000 of that number: Well, the talked about new jail-house might not be needed.

Perhaps the Sheriff should lend his calculator to Chairman Bannister?

Rick-

Illegal Aliens are afforded no protection under the Constitution…period.

If an individual was breaking into your home, you’d shoot them (unless you’re a useless liberal who cares more about the plight of the criminal than the rights of the victim), why then, do we let them “break into our country” by the millions???

Just as the robber was stealing from you, these illegals are doing the same, but on a grander scale.

Deportation, however attractive, is not a viable option…instead, we should declare them all citizens, right where they stand, and tax their asses like all the rest of us citizens who are bearing the financial burden for their health services.

Any employer caught paying ANYONE “under the table” should have their business license pulled.

I’m sick of these THIEVES, and I’m sick of the business-owners who pay them to STEAL from us.

I await the “Liberal response”…

Comments from Florida. I am glad to see some intelligent comments coming from intelligent sounding Americans for a change. On most sites I scan, the comments sound like they are written by fifth graders. On the subject of illegals, I have a few comments. America was built on a system of laws. Why do we need new laws just to accomadate illegals? Can’t we just enforce the ones that are already on the books? Stop illegal immigration. Stop the anchor baby policy. Fine the companies and employers that are providing employment to the illegals.
Stop providing free government housing and food stamps to illegals. Stop providing free medial care to illegals. The middle class of America cannot afford to foot the bill to pay for these free loaders. If we do these things, illegals will know that they are not welcome here unless they follow our existing laws and get in line to apply to come to our country legally. We are not against ‘immigration’. We are against ‘illegal’ immigration.

I am not a fan of illegal immigration, either.

However, I live near Buford Hwy. If the Latin Illegals start to move out in large numbers, I am even more worried about the arrival of the Katrina and New Orleans-type riffraff that will move in to take their place in low income housing and run down apartment complexes.

If anyone should read this who does not believe illegal immigration is a problem:

Do not ask me for more tax dollars to build more schools. We have enough schools if we close the border send the illegals home.

Do not ask me for more tax dollars to build jails and prisons. 28% of federal prisoners and a much higher number of state and local jails are housing illegal immigrants. Send them home when they’ve finished their sentence. We will have plenty of prison space.

Do not ask me to conserve water. Close the border; send illegal immigrants home. This will conserve 10% of our regional water supply.

Do not ask me for more money for welfare, food stamps, or medical care for the poor (especially for Grady Hospital). Close the border; send illegal immigrants home.

Do not ask me to conserve energy to avoid ‘brown outs’. Send the illegal immigrants back home and we will have enough power.

Do not ask me for more money for more roads. Send illegal immigrants back home and let’s see how the traffic flows.

No, illegal immigration didn’t create any of these problems, but they are using resources that are now becoming scarce. Before we change our own lifestyles, shouldn’t we first get rid of those who should not be here in the first place?

jtom, the kids we have in our schools where I live in N GA were born here, so they are American citizens. Sending home the actual illegal resident kids would save us about 1 teaching position—30 kids out of 630 in all (anglo and latino). Now, if their PARENTS were sent home, and the kids went with them, THEN we would save about 20-25% of our teaching positions.

Our problem is that the main employer has been allowed for almost 20 years to hire folks who are here illegally. About 80% of their workers are illegal residents. The employer supposedly runs the new hires through their e-verify system. As I understand it, that (federal) program only verifies that the name and number go together; they do not tell if the person claiming the name really IS that person. The city fathers have done nothing to crack down on this industry. The industry gets its passive, low cost labor, and passes the costs onto the taxpayers (which, I must say, is all of us, to some degree). The shareholders get richer while the rest of those living in the area absorb many of the expenses, especially of educating the worker’s children, at the local level, and paying for medical care, at the state and federal level.

catlady: yes, unfortunately anyone born in the US is a citizen as explicitly stated in the Constitution. Still, if we closed the border and send the illegals back to their country, the combination of children leaving with their parents, and just as importantly, no new immigrants crossing the border and having children, would result in us having adequate schools for a long time.

Your main employer is cheating US citizens out of jobs. Without illegals, he would have to raise salaries to attract legal citizens. This would force him to raise the price of his product, and market forces would lead him to reduce production. In the long run, though, everyone would benefit and products would more closely reflect their ture costs of production.

Not every citizen in this country is cut out to be management material. There must be some non-skilled, and low-skilled jobs available which pay decent wages for our own citizens. Allowing illegal immigration distorts the labor supply and creates artificially low wages. We are hurting ourselves, particularly the lower income groups.

Rick, you are wrong that “[s]tate and local attempts to deal with illegal immigrants typically get struck down because they encroach on individual Constitutional rights….”

They have been nullified because they encroached on the federal government’s sole authority to determine immigration status and punish those here illegally. Some state and local governments have attempted to punish illegal immigrants (or the companies that hire them) for their status, which they cannot do… simply because they don’t have the authority to determine an alien’s status in the first place.

HOWEVER, federal law expressly gives local government authority to regulate illegal immigration through licensing.

Some have exercised this authority by requiring businesses to participate in E-Verify as a condition of receiving/renewing a business license. Others require renters to apply (at low or no cost) for a “renter’s permit,” which allows the government to check the applicant through E-Verify prior to issuing the benefit.

Both approaches are authorized by federal law, completely legal and court-tested.

ThaaaaaaaaaaanK YOU!

…. And just what might we call that Bob? The protected right of the State under tenth amendment of the U.S. Constitution? Yes indeed, the State can license unauthorized workers and the employers who hire them right out of business, mostly likely right out of this State. “IF” and it is a mighty BIG IF, our state legislators and governor would pass and sign into law “occupational licensing” for every job in this state and apply the same proof of legal residency requirement that is now applied under law to get a State of Georgia License to drive. Then, illegal aliens would be unable to work in this state and their employers would be unable to operate in this State without facing Local and State enforcement.

Learn a lesson from the eagle. When it’s time for the baby eagle to leave the nest the mother starts removing the padding from the nest leaving the uncomfortable lining. This makes the baby want to leave the nest and start working for himself.

The local governments need to start making it very expenisive with fines for employers who hire illegals.

Schools should be allowed to report students who attend school for a few months then enroll in another school then another in order to avoid the law. This is suspicious behavior.

Schools should be allowed to not have students enrolled in a school once they turn 19. This will get rid of the adult students still sitting in 11th grade or earlier.

Emergency rooms should screen all people to determine their emergency. If it’s just to get free shots, a sore toe or other non emergencies treatments just to get them for free, should be referred to local doctor’s offices where they have to pay.

Malls, especially Gwinnett Place Mall should have security all over the place to bust up these large number of youth that just hang out and never buy anything. I visited that mall yesterday and the huge number of Spanish speaking kids were very intimidating. I know some of these kids and they are under 15. Where are the parents?

As individuals we can report what we see when it happens. Another thing that works is to have a shirt and place ICE or INS on the sleeve and wear it. I know of a true case where this worked in a hospital emergency room and waiting room evacuated very quickly.

We as people can do our part. This illegal situation needs to be addressed and it will take everybody to do it.

Last of all we as people need to push to get the constitution changed to eliminate the anchor baby clause. Two illegals should breed an illegal not a legal. Make it retro active. If we make it uncomfortable for these people, they will deport themselves.

That lesson is called attrition and that is exactly what we Pro-American immigration reform advocates have been pushing for a number of years. However, any attrition policy that does not attrit both parties involved in an illegal activity is self-defeating. To amend section one of the 14th amendment, to make birthright citizenship inherited rather than acquired through geography (which I strongly do support) which attempts to impose an “ex-post facto” (which strongly I don’t support) would surely doom such an amendment before the ink could dry upon the paper it was written on.

I particularly liked this ignorant statement by Badie.

Weigh the grandstanding, exchanges and pledges carefully, no matter the messenger. State and local attempts to deal with illegal immigrants typically get struck down because they encroach on individual Constitutional rights (even illegal immigrants).

Unfortunately for this fat tub of journalistic malpractice, ICE rules about local enforcement are legal.

And, as far as I know, no state law has been ruled unconstitutional in Georgia. You won’t be hearing that from Badie.

Of course, no one reads Badie’s columns for the truth, except maybe Brucie. He’s a fourth rate hack and should be banned from keyboards.

I was fortunate enough to hear Gen. Colin Powell speak recently. Amongst the many insightful points he made during his speech, he lamented the current “ship them back to where they came from, or better yet don’t let them in to begin with” attitude that seems so prevalent in our society.

His hope is that America will come out of the immigrant-bashing phase before too long.
