DeKalb retirees in fix over insurance

A glitch in switching medical insurers continues to cause problems for retired DeKalb County employees, as they call their new insurer only to discover they aren’t covered.

“I called Cigna this morning, and they still have no record of me being in the system,” Larry Davis, a former Sheriff’s Department administrator, said Tuesday.

County spokeswoman Kristie Swink said all affected retired employees should receive temporary insurance cards this week. The problems developed after the county decided last year to drop Blue Cross Blue Shield. Those who had Blue Cross coverage had to select a new provider in October, and people who picked Cigna have been having problems when filling prescriptions or going to the doctor.

The county has acknowledged it erred in filing paperwork. Cigna said a “small percentage” of retirees and employees were affected.

Davis, the former sheriff’s employee, said he knows of others in the same predicament, including two of his former employees in the sheriff’s warrant office.
