Sunday, December 14, 2008
Brian Nichols is now in the custody of the Georgia Department of Corrections. A helicopter transporting him from Atlanta to the institution in Butts County touched down at 12:38 p.m. at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison about 90 minutes after he was sentenced.
Next for him:
> Nichols will be “processed” at the diagnostic prison. > During that time, he will be issued a uniform, boots, a toothbrush and a rule book. He also will receive physical and dental examinations and a mental evaluation.
> His DNA will be taken and entered into a state database.
> His potential for risk will be assessed.
> He will live in a cell with one other inmate.
> He will be allowed no visitors for 60 days except for his attorneys, and any meetings with them must be coordinated with the warden.
> After two months have passed, Nichols will be assigned to a permanent prison based on his security risk and any health needs.
