Holiday food drive needs assistance

A nonprofit agency that plans to help 1,450 needy families in Cobb County at Thanksgiving needs food donations and volunteers.

Jennifer Cain, with the Center for Family Resources, is looking for volunteers to host food drives and to sort and pack food boxes at the Thanks for Giving 2008 food distribution, Nov. 24-25, at the Cobb Civic Center. Volunteers must be 16 and older and able to lift food boxes and stand during 1-2 hour shifts.

Literacy group aids with array of skills

The Cobb Literacy Council, which offers classes to improve reading, writing and math skills of 69,000 people, is seeking volunteers to help get the job done.

The nonprofit council conducts adult education classes for employees who need the skills to do their jobs properly, residents without a high school diploma and populations that speak little or no English.

Rivers, streams need cleanup help

Volunteers are needed throughout October for Rivers Alive, a statewide project to clean up Georgia’s rivers and streams. The event was started in 1992 and is sponsored by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs’ Keep Georgia Beautiful Program.
