The mother of a boy allegedly molested by a Catholic church choir director said the discovery of abuse has devastated her.

"He was a part of our family, he ate with us, took trips with us," said the woman who cannot be identified because she is the mother of an alleged sex abuse victim. "It is unbelievable. We're still trying to put the pieces together and where we missed the signs."

Rafael Rojas-Lopez Garcia, 40, faces multiple counts of child sexual crimes, and police believe there are more victims. Garcia, who was the director of an adult choir at Saint Philip Benizi Catholic Church in Jonesboro, is being held without bond in the Clayton County Jail.

The mother said Garcia, who has a wife and four children in Mexico, worked as a painter before falling from a ladder and breaking both wrists.

Since then, he'd been collecting worker's compensation and earning money at the church and through private music lessons.

He was a devoted Catholic, the mother said, and often socialized with other members at Saint Philip Benizi.

The boy's mother told police Garcia often baby-sat the child.

In fact, Garcia was baby-sitting when the parents came home and found their son in his bedroom, hastily rearranging his clothes, police said.

The movie, "Schindler's List," was playing on Garcia's laptop, police said.

When the boy told his mother Garcia had taken nude photos of him and touched him inappropriately, she called police.

Police allegedly found nude and sexually explicit photos of the boy and Garcia on Garcia's camera.

They said he had extensive photography and computing equipment in the bedroom.

Pat Chivers, of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, which oversees the Jonesboro church, said Garcia was a contract worker at one Mass each week.

Chivers said Garcia had no contact with children and is no longer under contract since his arrest.

"We are cooperating with the police investigation," Chivers said. "Mr. Garcia won't be back to church."
