BITES: Pastry lovers will flip for peach turnover in Buford> GOTTA HAVE: Peach turnover
> SERVED BY: Bill Rhodes Bakery
> WHERE: 2725 Hamilton Mill Road, Suite 650, Buford 30519
> COST: $2.50
> HOW IT'S MADE: The dough is handmade for the turnover, which is filled with peach preserves, then folded over and baked. A topping of egg wash and sugar results in a crispy and sweet pastry that can be eaten for breakfast or a snack. The turnovers, which are general manager Brittany Stone's favorite items on the menu, also come in cherry and apple flavors.
> BACK STORY: Owners Becky Evans and Karen Williams opened the Hamilton Mill location in February 2007, joining the original store in Snellville. "They wanted to expand," Stone said. "A lot of people moved out of Snellville up this way. It's a long drive all the way to Snellville." Seven types of brownies, including one with peanut butter icing and chocolate butter creme (for 95 cents), and popular petit fours ($1.25 each for plain) and cheese stars ($5.50 for a pack of 24) fill the display cases. There also are cupcakes, cookies, pies and pastries. Cakes average $30, for a quarter-sheet size that serves 24. During our visit, several creative cakes were on display, including one in the shape of law textbooks, complete with a gavel, for a groom's cake (he is in law school at UGA).
