The former principal of Peachtree Ridge High School has been promoted to Gwinnett County Public Schools' new chief academic officer.
Steven W. Flynt, who was recently tapped to be an area superintendent, will change jobs again as part of a restructuring in the district office.
Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks has appointed Flynt as chief academic officer, a new position for the district. The job will require Flynt to lead the Division of Teaching and Learning, which works directly with schools, supporting improvement initiatives and the business of educating students.
"Dr. Flynt is a proven leader who is passionate about teaching and learning," Wilbanks said in a statement. "I have been impressed with Dr. Flynt's work in each position he has previously held and have every confidence he will succeed in his new role, moving the organization toward our vision of a system of world-class schools."
Flynt has an associate of arts in education from Young Harris College; a bachelor's degree in biology from Lees-McRae College; a master's degree in science education from Piedmont College; and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Georgia.
He began his career in education in 1993 as a teacher in DeKalb County Public Schools. He joined Gwinnett County Public Schools in 1994 as a science teacher at Dacula High and Phoenix High. He was named assistant principal at Dacula High in 2002 and became principal of Peachtree Ridge in 2006.
Another area superintendent will be appointed to fill the position vacated by Flynt, school officials said.
