Artists' group work exhibited

Members of the Buford Artists' Group will be showing their work in the exhibit, "Painted Spaces —- Special Places," through July 25.

'Fabulous Fourth' at Mall of Georgia

The Mall of Georgia is hosting its eighth "Fabulous Fourth" event July 4-5.

Music and activities start at 2 p.m. July 4 with a free concert in the Village Amphitheatre.

The Kids' Zone area will feature bouncy house inflatables, carnival games and other family activities (a nominal fee may apply for some attractions).

The Georgia Force will sponsor the event and deliver a live on-stage performance featuring the team's cheerleaders and mascot at 3 p.m.

The day will culminate with fireworks and a post-fireworks movie, shown on the main screen at the Village Stage.

The carnival games, inflatables and family activities will be open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. July 5. Stone Echo will perform at 6:30 p.m. in the Village Amphitheatre.

Buford Day Expo takes place July 12

Ramming is basic training graduate

Army National Guard Pvt. Tiffany A. Ramming graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia.

Ramming studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values and physical fitness and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training; drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, marches and field training exercises. Ramming is a 2007 graduate of Monroe Area High School.

She is the daughter of Rebecka Ramming of New Hope Church Road, Loganville, and granddaughter of Dorthy Correll of Monroe.

DULUTH

Brown bags on downtown green

The city of Duluth is hosting "Brown Bag Lunches" on the downtown green every Thursday through the first week in August. The public can enjoy live entertainment and splash in an interactive fountain from noon to 1:30 p.m. Visitors can bring their lunch or visit the Park Cafe or Steverino's. Omeara finishes Air Force training

Air Force Airman 1st Class Patrick C. Omeara graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. Omeara studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. He earned credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

He is the nephew of Donny Jackson of Duluth.

Celebration for America on July 3

The city of Duluth hosts its annual "Duluth Celebrates America" Thursday at Scott Hudgens Park, located in the River Green office park off Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.

Gates open at 4 p.m., the concert is at 6 p.m. (Army Ground Forces band Classix), and the fireworks display at 9:30 p.m.

Train rides will be provided by the North Georgia Live Steamers. There will also be inflatables, a rock climbing wall and the United States SOCOM parachute team's performance. A variety of food vendors will be onsite. For more information, call 678-475-3512.

LAWRENCEVILLE

Ross completes infantry training

Army Pvt. Kempis O. Ross graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning in Columbus. He received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and use of various weapons and weapons defenses.

Ross is the son of Brenda Burch of Joel Road, Carthage, N.C., and James Ross of Oak Vista Court, Lawrenceville.

Roundtable meeting July 6

The Northeast Georgia Civil War Roundtable will meet 3 p.m. July 6 at the Gwinnett History Museum. The public is invited.

Coleman finishes combat training

Civic knowledge at youth academy

The city of Lilburn is looking for participants, ages 13 to 18, to be part of the inaugural Lilburn Youth Public Service Academy (LYPSA), to be held July 31 and Aug. 1.

The program is free and is available on a first come, first served basis. LYPSA will provide an opportunity for participants to learn more about their local government and to discuss issues that apply to them.

Activities will include touring City Hall, participating in a service project, brainstorming on how to govern the city, meeting local entrepreneurs and concluding with a graduation ceremony and cookout in City Park.

Schwartz specialist in ammunition

Army Reserve Pvt. Stephen J. Schwartz graduated from the Ammunition Spewcialist Advanced Individual Training course at Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Ala.

The course is designed to train soldiers to assist in receipt, storage, issue, maintenance, modification, destruction, and demilitarization of conventional ammunition, munitions and explosive components; perform ammunition supply stock control and accounting duties using automated and manual procedures, and operate material handling equipment to maneuver ammunition.

He graduated from Parkview High School in 2006.

Schwartz is the son of Jeffery A. Schwartz of Tucker.

SNELLVILLE

Called meeting for City Council

The Snellville City Council will hold a called meeting, 7:30 tonight in the council chambers. Citizens are encouraged to attend or contact City Hall with any questions or comments.

Kenny completes basic training

Army Spec. Nicholas I. Kenny graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla. Kenny studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics. He received a bachelor's degree in 2005 from Brigham Young University.

Kenny is the son of Joseph Kenny of John St., Papillion, Neb., and Teena Johnson of Snellville.

Cater is basic training graduate

Army Pvt. Althea D. Cater graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia.

Cater studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. Cater graduated from the high school program at DeKalb Technical College in 2007.

She is the daughter of Dorcus Cater of Snellville.

SUWANEE

Ride with PRIDE class is July 12

A Georgia Teens Ride with PRIDE (Parents Reducing the Incidents of Driver Error ) class is 2 p.m. July 12, at the Suwanee Crossroads Center, 323 Buford Highway. Offered in cooperation with the Georgia Traffic Injury Prevention Institute, the program is designed to help reduce the number of injuries and deaths related to teen driving.

The PRIDE program addresses attitudes and behaviors of teenage drivers. The course is designed to make parents and guardians more aware of their own driving behaviors, assist parents in helping teens become safe drivers, and offer strategies for required supervised practice driving time.

Students receive scholarship

Ten students from Gwinnett high schools were awarded the Beauty P. Baldwin Scholarship from the Upsilon Alpha Omega Graduate Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority at a reception at Hopewell Christian Academy in Norcross on June 14.

The students receiving the scholarship are: Mehiret Wondimu, Central Gwinnett High School; Shanise Lawrence, Berkmar; Kiana Nicholas, Central Gwinnett; Kaitlyn Gaddis, South Gwinnett; Monique Jones, South Gwinnett; Vonee Hemans, Brookwood; Mi'lisa Patton, Peachtree Ridge; Mia Crayton, Brookwood; Mallory Fox, Parkview; Kameon Prather, North Gwinnett.

Scholarship recipients have already been accepted to an accredited four-year college or university.
