The tax rate in Forsyth County is going up to pay for the $100 million green space and recreation bond approved by voters this year.
The county's millage for bonds is being proposed at 1.196 mills, more than double the current 0.446 millage.
The tax rates for maintenance and operations and fire services are expected to stay the same, according to a news release issued by the county.
"The significant increase in the bond property tax rate is due to the approval of the $100 million parks, recreation and green space bond measure approved by voters in February," the news release states. "The county intends to issue these bonds in September or October."
The biggest share of the $100 million —- $36 million —- has been earmarked to buy green space.
Other projects slated for funding in the program include: Fowler Park, land for a northwest community park and the Big Creek Greenway Trail.
By law, commissioners are required to hold three public hearings on the proposed increase.
Those hearings are set for 3 p.m. July 8 and 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. July 17.
