Charlotte youth choir to perform

Testify, a nondenominational youth choir with 150 members from Charlotte, N.C., will perform at Sugarloaf United Methodist Church 7 p.m. June 25. The Next Stop members will be their guests of honor.

The Lawrenceville Neighborhood Alliance has created a new Web site and e-mail list to inform residents of current events, such as quality of life challenges, pending rezoning requests and City Council agendas.

Water, sewerage panel meeting

The Gwinnett County Water and Sewerage Authority will hold its meeting at 4 p.m. today at the Department of Water Resources Central Facility.

Program seeks applicants

The Gwinnett Neighborhood Leadership Institute is accepting applications for the 2008-09 program year. This eight-month program includes orientation, weekend retreat, Saturday training sessions and a community project that participants plan and carry out.

Participants are immersed in a variety of topics including communications, government, media relations, growth issues, education and criminal justice issues. Sessions have included visiting the state Capitol, police ride-alongs and discussions with county and educational officials, community improvement district officials and representatives of city government.

Sierra Club hosts candidate forum

The Greater Gwinnett Group of the Sierra Club will host a candidates forum for chairman of the Board of Commissioners 7 p.m. Thursday at Berkmar High School auditorium, 405 Pleasant Hill Road, Lilburn.

The group has invited Chairman Charles Bannister, Commissioner Lorraine Green and Glenn Pirkle to present their visions for the environmental future of Gwinnett and the surrounding region. LOGANVILLE: Ford promoted to senior airman

Quadoah R. Ford was promoted to the rank of senior airman in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.

Ford is assigned to the 94th Airlift Wing, Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Marietta. He is the son of Remeka Turk of Watson Gate Road, Loganville.

SNELLVILLE: Orthopedic surgeon to speak

The h2u (health, happiness, you) organization at Emory Eastside Medical Center presents Craig Mines, orthopedic surgeon, speaking about joint replacement and injury prevention. The free lecture will be at 2 p.m. June 25 at the Snellville Senior Center, 2350 Oak Road.

Health screening will be Thursday

Emory Eastside Medical Center will offer a community health screening 8-10 a.m. Thursday in Classrooms 1 and 2, 1700 Medical Way, Snellville.

These screenings include: fasting blood sugar ($3.80), cholesterol ($5), total lipid profile which includes total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL and cardiac risk factors ($17.80). Participants must fast from 8 p.m. the evening before with no more than a sip of water to take any required medication. Free blood pressure checks and free stroke assessments and information are also available that day. No appointment is necessary, but participants will need to bring their Social Security number and physician's name, address and ZIP code. Participants must be at least 18. A copy of the results will be mailed directly to participants and physicians.

Youth football registration

The Shiloh Athletic Association in conjunction with the Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation will hold football registration 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Shiloh High Football Fieldhouse. The registration fee is $200, which includes game jerseys, pants and decals. An annual $20 association fee per family is also due at registration. The fee is $50 for families that live out of the county. All fees and registration are nonrefundable. Online registration is available at www.saa-youth.org. Online registration closes Thursday. Children's fishing derby at park

Snellville Parks and Recreation Department will host its ninth annual Children's Fishing Derby Saturday, at T.W. Briscoe Park.

The Atlanta Tightlines Bass Club will offer fishing instruction and manage all of the competitions. Registration is $2 and open to kids 3-12. Check-in is 7:15 a.m. and the derby is scheduled to conclude by noon at the Lakeside Pavilion. Please bring your pole. Bait will be provided. Pre-registration by Wednesday. Space is limited. Herrlein is training graduate

Army National Guard Spec. Eric R. Herrlein graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

Herrlein received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics. Herrlein graduated in 1992 from Brookwood High School in Snellville.

He is the son of Robert A. Herrlein of Lilburn.

Federal retirees to hear Copeland

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Button Gwinnett Chapter 1348 will hold its June meeting at noon Thursday, John Boys Restaurant, 3050 W. Main Street, Snellville.

Planning, zoning board to meet

The City of Sugar Hill Planning and Zoning Board will meet 6:30 p.m. today, City Hall annex, 4988 West Broad St. Administrative updates to the zoning map will be reviewed. The public is encouraged and welcome to attend.

Exchange student to work for city

The City of Sugar Hill welcomes Corinna Cuypers, an exchange student from Duisburg, Germany.

Cuypers is 17, wants to become a lawyer and is pursuing studies in that direction. For the next two weeks, she is working in Sugar Hill City Hall to get exposure to local government and how it functions.

Her sponsor is Meg Avery, a local resident and former City Council member. Avery is employed at Duluth Middle School and has previously hosted five exchange students from Germany and Italy.

COUNTYWIDE: Sorority walk marks centennial

The Upsilon Alpha Omega Graduate Chapter of Gwinnett County and the Phi Phi Omega Graduate Chapter of North Fulton sorority sisters are hosting "ESP 1908 Global Centennial Walk" June 28. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., with the walk 11 a.m.-noon, and a health fair/picnic from noon-3 p.m. Participants should bring a lunch. The walk will begin at Brundage Park behind Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. Walkers will travel through Norcross to Thrasher Park.

The sorority members will walk 1.908 miles in celebration of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.'s 100th year of service and in tribute to the sorority's founding in 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Grill-off contest with firefighters

BJ's Membership Club is hosting the "Gwinnett County Firefighter Grill-Off," 9 a.m.- 12:30 p.m, June 28.

This grill-off competition is designed to celebrate the tradition of firehouse cooking and promote grilling safety in advance of the July 4 holiday. BJ's will donate $1,000 to a local fire-safety charity; a $500 prize to the firehouse with the best cooks; and a grill to all participating firehouses.
