Dee Dawkins-Haigler will move on in her effort to fill the vacated Georgia House District 93 seat. She defeated Malik Douglas 194-143, according to unofficial election votes Tuesday night.
"I was very nervous until a few minutes ago," Dawkins-Haigler said shortly after the results were announced. Official results will be released Thursday.
Dawkins-Haigler of Lithonia will replace former state Rep. Ron Sailor Jr., (D-Lithonia), who resigned in March after pleading guilty to felony money laundering.
His unexpired term ends Dec. 31. But on July 15, just five weeks away, Dawkins-Haigler must run again in a Democratic primary for the term that begins on Jan. 1, 2009.
"This is what we call on my campaign team the amazing, never-ending race," said the 38-year-old minister and political consultant.
