Missing the meaning of memorial?

Merriam Webster's defines "memorial" as serving to preserve remembrance, something (as a speech or ceremony) that commemorates, a decorated day to honor those who have died in the nation's wars.

On Saturday, my community supported six hours of entertainment by offering "Operation Huey Rides" for $50.

On a day when we should be somberly remembering the human cost of war, we were reminded of assault by entertainment in the air and a re-enacting of a ground assault in Vietnam.

What has happened to my little corner of the world? Why can't we become a community of conscious middle- to upper-class homeowners honoring our service men and woman and working for peace?

I am ashamed of my community.

10-year-old reflects giving nature of family

My best friend is Hannah Perras' mom, and —- oh boy —- what a genuinely caring family! All five of them are the giving kind, and it's a lesson for all of us —- your kids copy what you display!

God bless Hannah. I am so proud to call them friends!

What a role model for other children!

I moved away from Atlanta over a decade ago but still read the AJC.

My daughter, who is 4 years old, and her friends danced to Hannah Montana songs at a birthday party recently. It's easy to say parents should be a child's role model, but sometimes a person closer to their own age resonates more with them. I just want my child to know there are kids not much older than herself who do great things. She doesn't need the dubious role models. She and her friends need to know about Hannah Perras.

Thanks to Rick Badie for letting everyone know about this young lady. She is a much better role model than a certain Hannah who gets a lot more publicity! Way to go, Hannah Perras!
