PROUD MOMENTS: Duluth's Kester wins triathlon

Kristine Kester of Duluth was the overall women's winner at the Tri the Parks Triathlon Race Series event at John Tanner State Park in Carrollton. She finished the 600-meter swim/11.2-mile bike/3.1-mile run in 1:02:36. Lori Utberg of Buford finished third in the women's novice division in 1:30:42.

Local athletes with top-three age-group finishes included: Suzanne Meller, Norcross, 1:41:20; Adrienne Anderson, Norcross, 1:07:21; Laurie Ann Imes, Tucker, 1:22:10; Cecilia Luther, Duluth, 1:20:18; Dan Heckman, Norcross, 1:04:16; Chip Hawkins, Gainesville, 1:02:10; Tom Mattte, Duluth, 1:07:38; and Daniel Marlow, Suwanee, 1:26:08.

Duathlon

Chip Hawkins of Gainesville was the overall men's winner at the Jackrabbit Duathlon in Hiawassee. He finished the 2.2-mile run/12-mile bike/2.2-mile run in 1:06:45. Wendell Scott of Dacula won the men's 45-49 age group title in 1:14:34. Lisa Edens of Suwanee was first in women's 40-44 in 1:33:09. Lisa Scott of Dacula won the women's 45-49 title in 1:40:42.

Andrew Altman of Lawrenceville finished third in men's 40-44 in 1:27:36. Stephen Collins of Suwanee was third in men's 35-39 in 1:28:06.

Stair climbing

Kirk Corsello (10:33), Douglas Kerns (11:27) and Thad Smith (11:30) were the top three men's finishers in the firefighter division at Climb Atlanta, where participants climbed 55 floors at the BentleyForbes-Bank of America Plaza building.

In the women's firefighter division, the top three finishers were: Janea Cox, 20:51; Kimberly Bowie, 21:05; and Joyce Tyson, 27:04. Fire fighter age group winners were: Eric Robidou, 12:02; Justin Barnes, 12:18; and Stephen Saylor, 13:22.

Top three finishers in the men's open division were: Shai Birmaher, 8:08; Kim Chapman, 8:17; and Mike Hutsel, 8:21. Top three women's overall finishers were: Laura Podewils, 11:03; Malissa Piersol, 11:16; and Cathy Brown, 11:23. Age-group winners in the open division were: Ben Hailey, 8:43; Tim Lieuwen, 8:33; Brian Pilczuk, 10:09; Larry McDowell, 10:14; Roger Mills, 11:42; Ida Rosenblum, 12:17; Catherine Lautenbacher, 11:41; Debbie Roness, 12:12; and Iilonga Thandive, 11:52.

Tennis

Josh Slovin of Duluth won the boys 10-and-under singles title at the Hudlow Junior Championships at Hudlow Tennis Center in Norcross. He beat Alex Rowland of Duluth in the final. Brooke Bogdanovich of Suwanee won the girls 10 singles title. Hailey Denson of Lawrenceville was runner-up in girls 18 singles. Eric Caltabiano of Suwanee was runner-up in boys 16 singles.

More triathlon

Donny Chapman of Lawrenceville finished 22nd in the men's 18-24 age group at the Ironman Arizona in Tempe. He finished the 2.4-mile swim/112-mile bike/26.2-mile run in 13:39:10. Matt Backus of Snellville finished in 12:19:27. James Clayton of Dacula finished in 13:53:24.

Pete Martin of Lawrenceville finished in 14:00;54. Chat Scott of Snellville finished in 15:04:37. Paul Busino of Suwanee finished in 15:18:19. Scott Mackall of Lawrenceville finished in 15:37:44.
