Family members will gather this morning for the funeral of a 60-year-old woman killed Thursday in her upscale Lawrenceville subdivision.

Eva Kay Wenal's husband, Harold Wenal, found her lying on the floor of their house in the Sugarloaf Springs subdivision about 7 p.m. Thursday when he came home from work, according to police.

Gwinnett police spokeswoman Cpl. Illana Spellman said there was "a large amount of blood on her body," but declined to say how Wenal died.

The husband reportedly ran to a next-door neighbor's house and the neighbor telephoned police.

An officer who arrived to investigate said Wenal "laid down beside his wife, begging us to help," according to a police report.

Investigators were not releasing any more information about circumstances surrounding the case, Spellman said.

About a dozen people who identified themselves as relatives of the victim exited the house in the 1900 block of Sugar Lake Court around midday Monday. They left in a caravan of cars, declining to speak to reporters.

Sundus Adhi, an 18-year-old freshman at the University of Georgia who lives two doors down from the Wenals, said police clogged the street and blocked off the entrance to the quiet cul-de-sac for hours on Thursday night. Adhi said she saw Wenal's husband standing in the street, talking to investigators and relatives who arrived to comfort him.

"The man was just really upset," Adhi said. "He said he had been calling the house, but nobody was picking up the phone. That's why he came home early from work."

Adhi said neighbors were shocked that something like this happened in their safe neighborhood.

"It was in broad daylight, which was the weirdest part," Adhi said.

Anyone with information about the slaying is urged to contact the Gwinnett police homicide unit at 770-513-5300.

The funeral for Eva Kay Wenal will be held at 11 a.m. at the Bill Head funeral home at 3088 Ga. 120 in Duluth.
