A ROUNDUP OF LAST WEEK'S PUBLIC MEETINGS
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 05/04/08
Monday's Alpharetta City Council meeting
Next meeting: May 5
Action: Allowed Prospect Park to increase its density from 840,000 square feet of retail to about 881,000 square feet; from 1.14 million square feet of office space to 1.3 million square feet. The number of residential units increased from 568 to 578. The 415-room hotel remains the same.
Vote: 7-0
What it means for you: Supporters say the increased density won't have much effect on the public but will make the project more viable. Thus far, there's been little opposition.
Monday's Johns Creek meeting
Next meeting: May 5
Action: Approved an agreement with Irwin County to house municipal inmates. The city will pay $45 per day per prisoner.
Vote: 7-0
What it means for you: It probably will spare the city the expense of building a jail, keep Johns Creek police from having to travel downtown to transport prisoners, and prevent Fulton County from releasing prisoners because of crowding.
Monday's Milton City Council meeting
Next meeting: May 5
Action: Voted to defer two cases in which the applicants requested sewer for property near Ga. 9, one for a mixed-use project and one for a bank.
Vote: 7-0, then 5-0
What it means for you: Many fear that any extension of sewer would create a precedent that would allow more sewer —- and possibly greater density —- to creep into the city and ruin Milton's quality of life. Others believe that these properties are close enough to already sewered portions of Ga. 9 and that no harm will be done.
