John Rhodes calls his class "Labyrinths for Dummies." We'll just call this event "everything you need to know about labyrinths."
Harmony Grove UMC, 50 Harmony Grove Road in Lilburn, hosts its second annual Community Labyrinth from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. The labyrinth is a spiritual tool in the shape of a circular maze. Church traditions employ it in different ways, most commonly for participants to walk the path as they meditate and pray.
Rhodes, coordinator of the church's labyrinth ministry, offers his "Labyrinth for Dummies," a short introductory course into the history of the labyrinth and its uses. Rhodes teaches the course across the Southeast and has even taught about the labyrinth in Seoul, South Korea.
"It was a trip getting my 38-foot labyrinth through customs," he jokes.
While Harmony Grove's event will feature both indoor and outdoor labyrinths, there's been more of a trend of late towards labyrinths in hospitals and hospice centers. Gwinnett Medical Center and Gwinnett Technical College have labyrinths.
Following that course, John will teach participants how to make finger labyrinths (labyrinths you trace with your finger instead of walk) and how to do the Appleton, a line dance developed in England that employs the labyrinth.
"There is no right or wrong way to walk the labyrinth. You just decide if you want to walk it with an open mind and open heart and see what happens," said Rhodes.
