It was a match made in the kitchen. Sayuri and Hoyt Williams met as students at the Art Institute of Atlanta, and have stayed together through stints at Joli Kobe bakery in Sandy Springs and other local operations. Now they've opened their own place to showcase their culinary talents.
Artisan Foods fills the former Mittie's Tea Room space on Canton Road in Roswell with the aromas and flavors of the couple's main attraction: freshly baked bread. Adapting the kitchen to handle the process required a bit of an overhaul, most of which was done by the couple personally.
"We did the cabinets, the counters, the floors, the shelves," said Hoyt Williams. "We held to the name 'artisan' by being hands-on."
The result is a 56-seat dining area, open patio and covered patio where diners can sit down to breakfast and lunch.
From scratch
"We are doing everything on the premises, from roasting our own meats to baking our own breads and pastries with organic starters and ingredients," said Hoyt Williams.
Start off the day with a traditional or egg-white omelet stuffed with your favorites from a list of 16 goodies, including shrimp, turkey and artichoke. Other options include French toast, bacon or sausage and egg sandwiches on croissants, Irish oatmeal, grits, yogurt, biscuits and a daily quiche. Chef's specials may be eggs Sardou, shrimp or a plate of shrimp and grits.
Lunch begins with a daily soup selection and nine salads, including greens topped with chicken, marinated flank steak, shrimp, prosciutto and pear or crab cakes. Sandwiches, paired with pasta salad or applesauce, are filled with flank steak, tuna or chicken salad, roasted chicken, a fried pork cutlet or egg salad.
Apples and chips
One of the signature items is the Granny Gobbler: roasted turkey topped by Granny Smith apples with sage mayo on a croissant. Fans of Utz potato chips from the Northeast will be tickled to find them beside their sandwiches.
Warm up with a hot salmon BLT; triple cheese with cheddar, smoked Gouda and provolone; barbecued beef; tomatoes, basil and mozzarella; roasted veggies; bacon and cheese; or a croque monsieur. Meatless options include a brie and fruit plate or warm goat cheese with honey and peppered walnut.
Kids can choose from the menu of triple decker PBJs, grilled ham and cheese or a beef hot dog.
From the bar
While the couple is working on acquiring a liquor license, they're sticking to several coffees, cappuccino, espresso and an array of Harney and Sons teas and soft drinks.
Get it to go
Just inside the door is a small retail section where you can grab a baguette, calamata loaf, pastry or brownie. The selection varies daily.
