Obama gains 7th Ga. superdelegate

Georgia Democratic Party Chairwoman Jane Kidd has endorsed U.S. Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois for president, giving the candidate another superdelegate vote from Georgia.

Kidd, who had remained neutral in the race between Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York, becomes the seventh of Georgia's 13 superdelegates to endorse Obama. Clinton has the support of three and three remain undecided.

With Obama and Clinton locked in a tight race for pledged delegates, the status of superdelegates becomes increasingly important. Superdelegates are elected officials and other party leaders who are unpledged, which means that they can cast a vote for any candidate at the party's national convention in August.

A spokeswoman for former President Jimmy Carter said he has no plans to endorse while primaries are still being held. Likewise, a spokesman for U.S. Rep. Jim Marshall said he, too, planned to remain neutral, for now.

Richard Ray, the final undecided superdelegate from Georgia, was of the same mind Wednesday.

"I am still uncommitted to either candidate," said the AFL-CIO leader and member of the Democratic National Committee. "Still watching what's going on, listening, hearing from both sides."

Ray said the pressure from the two campaigns to choose has not been as intense as one might expect.

"They are not being persistent, as one would suggest they are just burning up the phone lines," he said. "But they are not as far as I'm concerned."

Ray said he intends to remain "undecided for a period of time."

For Kidd, her decision was helped by Obama's strong grass-roots organizing for Georgia's Feb. 5 primary, which he won handily.

"In Georgia, we're making grass-roots voter contact our top priority in 2008, and I'm convinced that Sen. Obama shares our dedication to neighbor-to-neighbor contact," Kidd said. "I strongly believe that having Sen. Obama as our nominee puts Georgia into play, and I know that, as the nominee, he will invest in our efforts to turn Georgia blue this year."

Joining Kidd in backing Obama are U.S. Reps. David Scott, John Lewis, John Barrow, Sanford Bishop and Hank Johnson and DNC member Mary Long, who endorsed Obama on Tuesday.

Clinton has the support of state Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond and DNC members Carole Dabbs and Lonnie Plott.
