BEYOND THE MALLS

There's much more to shopping than hitting the malls. Metro Atlanta boasts several shopping districts that easily satisfy myriad tastes and budgets. Most are pedestrian-friendly and offer prime opportunities for people-watching.

VIRGINIA-HIGHLAND: Spreading out from the intersection of Virginia and North Highland avenues, the area is crowded with clothing, gift, antiques and novelty shops. Several good restaurants, from the long-favorite Murphy's to relative newcomer Noche, draw window shoppers and sidewalk strollers into the late evening.

MIAMI CIRCLE: Meandering off Piedmont Road north of the Lindbergh MARTA station and Sydney Marcus Boulevard, Miami Circle shouldn't be missed by those interested in country French antiques and one-of-a-kind architectural accents for home and garden.

BENNETT STREET: Just off Peachtree Road in Buckhead, this dead-end street is lined with some of the city's best antiques shops. With prices ranging from a few dollars for a garden accessory to thousands for imported English antiques, shopping here is a treasure hunt every day. There's a variety of quaint shops as well as the Interiors Market, with dozens of dealers under one roof. Bennett Street includes two restaurants and the TULA Arts Center, where more than 45 artists' studios are often open to the public.

EAST AND WEST BUCKHEAD: Buckhead's two busy commercial districts are the East and West Villages. The east side, bounded by Peachtree and Piedmont roads and Peachtree Avenue, is renowned for its late-night scene, with more than 100 bars and restaurants. But it is also home to bungalows, Tudors and cottages that have been converted into showrooms for antiques, gifts, Oriental rugs, clothing and accessories. The West Village, along West Paces Ferry and Roswell roads and Andrews Drive, has the Cates Center, a collection of elegant jewelry stores, stationers, bridal shops and salons. Clothing and consignment shops are scattered along Roswell Road, next to kitchen and bath showrooms, garden shops and galleries.

VININGS: Just over the Chattahoochee River from Buckhead, the focal point of this small Cobb County community is a quaint shopping district that includes coffeehouses, restaurants and a branch of the public library. The open-air Vinings Jubilee, designed like a Victorian village, includes such shops as Talbots and Banana Republic.

EAST ATLANTA VILLAGE: One of the city's coolest new shopping districts, this neighborhood crossroads at Flat Shoals and Glenwood avenues draws visitors from around the metro area as well as the adjacent communities. The coffee shops and restaurants are joined by antiques stores, gift shops, and music and clothing stores that cater to the hip urban crowd.

LITTLE FIVE POINTS: The intersection of Euclid, Moreland and McLendon avenues marks the convergence of the Inman Park and Candler Park neighborhoods. It's also one of the area's most popular commercial districts with shoppers of all sorts -- from suburban teens to bargain-hunting consignment shoppers. Check out the assortment of urban togs at the Junkman's Daughter or the organic groceries at Sevananda Natural Foods.

DOWNTOWN ATLANTA: Downtown shopping doesn't offer as many options as other sections of the city, but it's still worth checking out. Underground Atlanta offers a bevy of vending carts for those who collect T-shirts; African Pride is chockfull of clothing, artifacts and jewelry from Africa; for more conventional items, there's the Gap. You also can team some good exercise and a little shopping by walking from Underground Atlanta on Upper Alabama Street to Peachtree Center on Peachtree Street and ending up at CNN Center on Marietta Street.

STONE MOUNTAIN VILLAGE: About 20 minutes east of Atlanta off U.S. 78 in the shadow of Stone Mountain, this hamlet of homes has a central district of restaurants and shops along a seven-block main street, anchored by the old train depot. Sidewalk sales and various fair days attract crowds that enjoy discovering Civil War artifacts, checking out a vast pottery selection or taking home a box of locally made candy.

CHAMBLEE ANTIQUES ROW: The multicultural DeKalb County town of Chamblee, just minutes northeast of the Atlanta city limits on Peachtree Road, boasts a wealth of antiques dealers in a number of stores clustered along Broad Street.

BUFORD HIGHWAY: The corner of DeKalb County along Buford Highway north from Druid Hills Road is home to a large immigrant population from South and Central America and Asia. In stores along this route you'll find an array of foods, gifts and collectibles from Vietnam, China, Mexico and Korea, to name a few.

HISTORIC ROSWELL: The north Fulton County town of Roswell, about 20 miles north of downtown Atlanta, boasts two historic shopping areas where visitors can browse, dine and window shop. Around the square, at the intersection of U.S. 120 and Alpharetta Highway, there are several antique and gift shops. Stroll north on Mimosa Boulevard, lined with restored Victorian cottages and churches, to Canton Street, where you'll find gifts and little luxuries.

MARIETTA SQUARE: Along with a bandbox, gazebo and reproduction of the Liberty Bell, Marietta Square includes a variety of gift shops, antiques and consignment stores and restaurants.
